I am still getting an 'outlook express did not shut down properly' ..or 'This program has performed an illegal oeration and will be shut down, if it continues, contact program vendor. Being computer illiterate, I can't find answer to my problem...don't even know who 'my vendor' would refer to. Thanks for any suggestions. Dana71

I get that on occassion. Try restarting your computer.

The "vendor" would be microsoft, or if the program came pre-installed on your computer, you can contact whoever you got the computer from.

Thanks kidsfeet, I have HAD to restart many times but nothing clears it up. How do I find out if Outlook was preinstalled? Received computer from kids and they set it all up for me. I will ask them if there is no way to determine it myself. You know 'us granny's' don't like to ask if we can learn things on our own....maybe that's my problem!!!! Thanks for responding, Dana71

When you get the error, write down any details given. If there is a Detail button in the error window, click it and write that information down as well.

Delete any items left in the Deleted Items folder, or in the Sent Items folder. Compact the folders after deleting the files to free up space.

Post back with any Details, and also post the version of OE that you are using. You can find the version by clicking Help in OE and picking About Outlook Express.

Meya You have helped me fix my EO!

I developed the identical problem as dana and then it continued to worsen until I received the message that I did not have enough "memory". I could receive messages, but could not send them! Instead I would get that "memory" message. Very frustrating!

Not having a clue as to what to do, I downloaded Eudora and have been using it.

I tried your suggestion this AM and my OE is back up and working!

I am glad you post here and thanks!

Can't spell today!

do you know how to delete your identities in from Explore?

That may solve the problem, especially if you are using Windows 2000 pro or ME.

Then you will have to complete your identity information again. If you don't know how to do that DON'T.

Were you able to go into your Account settings in Outlook Express and make sure the Incoming (POP3) and Outgoing (SMTP) servers are set correctly?

If you have more trouble, post back.

Meya, Yes, I went in with Tech Support on the phone to check Accounts setup. The 1st Box shows POP3: Incoming Mail (original was; POP3.rconnect.com)...he took out the 3 in this line only and said all s/b O.K now.....
WELL...Outlook crashed again and I wrote down most of the details....First it said , illegal oper...will be shut-down...contact vendor if problem continues. The next,..MSIMN caused a general protection fault in module GDI.EXE at 001:000088be. After that a list of REGISTERS: such as EAX-EBX-ECX-EDX......Ilooked for a way to print them out but printer did not respond......I am leaving on a 4week vacation Sunday morning so you can imagine how frustrated I am. Thanks , Dana71

If you can't get OE working, you can use Hotmail to retrieve POP3 mail. I've done that when away from home and needing to check my mail.

Hello dana71. GDI.EXE refers to Windows Graphics Device Interface and a GDI.EXE fault usually means you have a problem with your video adapter driver.

Are you using a Matrox video adapter? Here's an article explaining that problem and how to correct it. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q166/1/25.asp

This is a Microsoft article dealing with display adapters in general: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q188/0/94.asp

This one also concerns video adapters and talks about checking to see if your hardware acceleration is set to full: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q133/4/40.asp

If it's not the display adapter then the other main thing it could be is either a damaged font or a missing fonts folder. If this is the case you may have to reinstall Windows. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q246/2/19.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=GDI.EXE%20&rnk=9&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q146/9/04.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=GDI.EXE%20&rnk=3&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98

More than likely it's your video adapter driver which may need to be updated. Here is a good site that lists some general GDI error messages: http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/ergdi.htm

Good luck!!

Blanche

I had this problem to it was driving me nuts. I tried to fix it using the Microsoft help on their website but it didn't help. I finally started using Microsoft Outlook 2000 (came with computer). Maybe you can get a free program like Eudora or something else?

Dana, you can sign up for a Hotmail account, and receive your POP3 email from Earthlink in Hotmail.

dana71, are you sure IE5.exe isn't on your system? Do a search by going to your START button and scroll up to the FIND tab and then choose FIND FILES AND FOLDERS. Type in IE5 and be sure the little box is checked that says INCLUDE SUBFOLDERS and that the LOOKIN section says DRIVE C. When the search is finished look through the selection for the IE5setup. If it's there you can double click on it and reinstall IE5 without having to download it again.

Hi.
I have earthlink too. You get get your email on the internet go to http://start.earthlink.net and click on Go To Web Mail. But it won't have your old messages, you'll still have to go to outlook express to see those. It's under Message Center on the left column. It will only have your new messages.

While your away your email will stay on the server at Earthlink until the get back and download it, it doesn't matter that Outlook Express is messed up. You can also set a Vacation Reply to let people know your away so you won't be able to answer back right away. Just go to http://support.earthlink.net/ under Customer Service on the left side under Email Maintenance click on Auto-reply Vacation Message. Have a nic Vacation!!

Speaking of OE...

I use Outlook Express, and have a dot matrix printer that I used to print out email messages using the Generic Text Windows driver, but ever since I upgraded OE from 5.0 to 5.5, it only prints a header saying Page x of x, but not the body of the email message. Any ideas about what is wrong?

My goodness! Just delete the darn thing and use Eudora or any of the MANY other email programs available out there! Why go to all this trouble to make Outlook work? There's nothing so special about it! Just another buggy Microsoft product!

Run your computer and software through the pcpitstop website and it will find all the things that are not working and tell you how to correct them.

This advice can also be used in other areas aside from email programs. If your Chevrolet breaks down, why go to any trouble trying to make it work? Just get a Ford! Your Maytag washing machine stops working? Junk it and get a Kenmore. PC crashed? Buy a Mac.

mrpotatoheadd, LOL. I agree with you. If something doesn't work on my computer I'm going to try to find out the reason. Many times the problem can also effect other parts of your system so it's always a good idea to try to find the cause to a particular problem.

I don't know the answer to your printer situation but I'm sure it's out there somewhere. Here are some great OE troubleshooting sites:
http://members.home.net/jlpick99/oe.htm
http://www.tomsterdam.com/sitemap.htm

I've also found Microsoft's Support Knowledge Base to be very helpful. http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp?fr=0&SD=GN&LN=EN-US

Good luck

Hi Blanche-

If something doesn't work on my computer I'm going to try to find out the reason.

I think one thing that people are overlooking when they say "If X doesn't work, dump it and use Y" is that sometimes, although X doesn't work properly, it may be the fault of Z, not X.

Thanks for the links- I'll check them out.
