***Free Listing Day***
As a special way to say thank you to our sellers, we are holding a Free Listing Day on the U.S. site (www.ebay.com)on Thursday, December 26th, 2002 between 00:00:01 PST (12:00 AM plus one second) and 23:59:59 PST (11:59 PM plus 59 seconds).
During the U.S. Free Listing Day, the insertion fee for all regular auction-style, Fixed Price, and 30-day Store Inventory listings will be $0.00 on the U.S. site (www.ebay.com) and on eBay Motors. This includes listings created prior to December 26th, 2002 but that are scheduled to start on December 26th, 2002.
All other fees (all other insertion fees, all Final Value Fees and all other optional listing fees, such as Buy It Now, Featured Plus!, Highlight, Bold, Gallery, Gift Services, Scheduled Listings, Gallery Featured, Homepage Featured, Reserve Fees, Picture Services, extended duration insertion fees, etc…) will still be charged.
For Store Inventory listings, the first 30-day insertion fee will be free. Extended duration fees will still be charged. If a seller lists with Good 'Til Canceled (GTC), they will be charged the current standard GTC listing charge beginning the next 30-day cycle.
Sothebys.com, eBay Live Auctions, all eBay International sites, Real Estate listings and Ad Format and eBay Professional Services are excluded from the U.S. Free Listing Day. Listings created during Free Listing Day on December 26th, 2002, but that are scheduled to start after December 26th, 2002 will also be excluded.
Sellers can take advantage of this offer by listing with Sell Your Item Forms 1.0 and 2.0, Mister Lister, Turbo Lister, Seller's Assistant, Seller's Assistant Pro and third-party listing tools.
Each day, we run several indexing cycles for eBay Search to capture new information, such as new listings, bids, etc. Due to the high volume of expected listings on Free Listing Day and the nature of Search, there is a possibility that Search updates could be 12 to 15 hours behind on the Friday and Saturday following Free Listing Day. Please note that this does not impact listings' indexing cycles.
We hope you enjoy Free Listing Day. Thanks for a great year!

well good luck everyone. I had a bunch of auctions ready to set up and launch tommorrow but those will now be put off another day. I avoid free listing days like the plauge ! Nothing but trouble and in no way worth the dollars saved on the minimal listing fees IMO. Best wishes again to all those who list and a merry x-mas to boot

The eBay fees will be free for what they specified but you will still have to pay the auctionwatch fees per listing.

I hope this time when eBay does free listing that they can weed out the auctions that are put on with no description, picture. This is done so that the sellers can list many auctions then go back and edit it what they want. They do have a title but nothing else. This takes up space for the honest sellers that want to use free listing. The last free listing day there was one seller that had on about 50 auctions with title only. People really know how to cheat the system....and there will always be people who cheat....my opinion.
I don't list on free listing days and never will...Remeber there is no free lunch.

Merry Christmas, just when I thought I could sleep I gotta get something free from ebay!! They did this on Christmas night! OK yes some of you were ready I was the one thnking it won't happen .... man can I make fast auctions when I want free stuff,
Well I hope some sell if not O'well I am giving this santa the rest of the night off.
Good Luck all I can hardly wait for the threads on listing problems...
Ya know I think its awful that the people that work at ebay AW and other auction houses have to work on christmas for this, just a thought but....I would hate to find out I had to stay up all night for the future mad rush on Christmas, knowing that there will be technical problems and crabby sellers, do you think they get overtime?
posted on December 26, 2002 01:20:40 AM new
Well maybe not. They must have technical support 24/7 and they should be able to take care of the load. I imagine it is harder on the support programs i.e. AW, SpareDollar, Auction Diner etc. that probably don't have the staff. This is probably a surprise to them as well as the sellers.

This is business. Think of all the other fields that work extra. The Medical Profession, Police, Fireman just to name a few. I worked many a holiday during my years as an x-ray technologist. It just comes with the job..I have no complaints.

Here's a plug for a profession that is never thought about...all of us federal workers at the National Weather Service Ever think about that official weather forecast that is produced, 24/7 every day of the year?

eBay is fine. No one is going to list when everybody is in bed. You can schedule auctions but I think most sellers will list in real-time. The load is going to come later today. But then there will be more staff to handle it. eBay is fine.

if Meg were feeling TRULY philanthropic, she would have schedualed this the last week of November. But she knows we'll all be listing then anyway. She wants to avoide the day-after slump. But I won't look a gifhorse in the mouth, and my wands sold well after xmas last year- to little girls and boys who had xmas money to spend.

Look at the charts, a steady rise and a steady rise in store items. There is no need for an FLD anymore. I bet an accetable minor dip in the listings total after Christmas may allow ebay to forever forsake the policy of FLDS. They'll use another less expensive promotion to keep the listings up.

eBay will have the FLD like last year. The natives become really restless for one, and I doubt eBay would want to be compared to "scrooge" during the holidays.

It seems that the International sites have not had FLD's either, unless I have missed them. I seem to remember U.K. Canada and Australia having a couple a year, even last year, but none this year.

I wonder if the British had as much abuse of the free listings as the USA site in the past? There were hundreds of American sellers that created many dummy auctions that they changed in the next few days after the FLD. That was part of the dilema of letting sellers setup as many free auctions as they wanted for one day only.

The Gallery fee for Regular auction-style listings, Fixed Price listings, eBay Motors - non vehicles listings, Real Estate listings (<=30 day) will be $0.01 on the U.S. site (www.ebay.com). And these types of free promotions are all that is needed in ebay's eyes, not a full blown FLD. Ebay could care less about a scrouge label.
