Here's an article about auction scams. Read ALL the pages and three things should become apparent.
1) most of the folks who get scammed, do something so stupid (like send a large payment to a seller with 0 rating), they are practically asking to get taken.
2) there are still folks who think they can do the above and Paypal will protect them.
3) the favorite payment methods accepted by scamming sellers are money orders, checks and paypal.
