~Chupa-Chupa~ quararibea cordata Native to Amazonia, upper Amazon regions of Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador Family: (Bombacaceae) Related to Durian, Cacao, Malabar Chestnut Matisia South American Sapote Fruits have sweet, juicy orange pulp with mild mango-melon flavor, with hints of strawberry. Bats are an important pollinator for this species in the Amazon rainforest. Cultivated in Amazon basin forest stands, Chupa Chupa is harvested from the wild for market. This brown, round and flattened fruit is highly esteemed in it's native area, and rarely known outside of South America.

Fruit: Mild mango-melon flavor, with hints of strawberry. Top-shaped fruits are ripe when white ring appears around the stem of the fruit. Flesh is orange and typically fibrous. Much of the flesh clings to the seed, and for this reason the fruit is called 'Chupa-Chupa' (suck-suck) as the flavor must be sucked from the flesh surrounding the seed. Chupa-chupa fruits are sold by the hundreds in amazonia markets. Chupa-chupa flowers occur cauliflourously, by the thousands on the branches of mature trees. Ripe fruits develop a green/white ring around the top. Main Uses: Fruit; Ornamental Growth Rate: Fast Mature Height/Spread: Large tree (to 50') in tropical climates, smaller tree size in sub-tropical climates. Large cordate leaves are 20-22 inches across. Flowering/Pollination: Cauliflorous, self-fertile, occurring in the hundreds along the main branches and trunk. Tolerance: Moderately tolerant of drought. Mild tolerance for salt.
	History/Origin: This tree is native to the Amazon basin, where it is cultivated in forest stands, and harvested from the wild for market. Species Observations: Large leaves of this tree may be damaged by cold, but branches are significantly hardier than the foliage. This is one of the few truly tropical species which can be grown in cooler parts of the tropics like south Florida, wherever frost is seldom. Container Culture: Possible, but not recommended due to size of tree. Nutritional Information: Fruits are likely quite nutritious. They do contain significant amounts of carotenes and fiber. Preparation / Food: Usually eaten fresh, preferably chilled. Can be used for juicing and blended drinks.
Soil/Nutrition: Moist, fertile, well drained. Can tolerate a little dryness, but prefers moisture in the soil. Widely adaptable, but requires constant nutrition and water during active growing periods. This species likes abundant nitrogen and potassium. 9-2-11 is a good general fertilizer ratio for this fruiting species which can grow very quickly. Light: Full Sun Wind: This geometrical tree is quite sturdy, despite often losing it's large leaves to wind. It is very resilient to leaf loss. Temperature: Sensitive to temperatures below 40 F when young. Once established, the tree can withstand occasional light frosts. Bearing Age: 5-6 years from seeds.

LIVE PLANTS ARE PERISHABLE. For this reason uninsurable.         When you order a plant we assume you are prepared to care for it. Please have potting media and a container prepared for your plant before it arrives. Shipping can be stressful on a plant, and any mistakes that you make upon arrival can stress the plant further, which is not good. Proper care is critical upon arrival. It is your responsibility to know how to care for the plant. Not every plant that I order through the mail survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there is no way to know what kind of conditions it will endure in the trip to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered to your door. Live arrival is guaranteed, eternal survival is up to you. Please Do NOT email me a week after potting your plant, and make a claim it arrived damaged. From delivery confirmation, you have only 48 hours from delivery confirmation to make any claim.	All claims need to be supported with Photos of the damaged plant(s) as packed/unpacked, the box if damaged, the packing materials and any documents.
