The plant has palm-like green leaves that can grow to about 3 feet long.           A Panama hat or just Panama is a traditional brimmed hat of Ecuadorian origin that is made from the plaited leaves of the toquilla straw plant (Carludovica palmata). Straw hats woven in Ecuador, like many other 19th and early 20th century South American goods, were shipped first to the Isthmus of Panama before sailing for their destinations in Asia, the rest of the Americas and Europe.           For some products, the name of their point of international sale rather than their place of domestic origin stuck, hence “Panama hats.” The 49ers picked up these hats in Panama, and when President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Panama Canal construction, he wore such a hat, which increased its popularity. They're also known as a Jipijapa, named for a town in Ecuador once a center of the hat trade.	Anthurium Aroid Plant                Carludovica palmata is a beautiful plant in the Cyclanthus family.                 Despite of the palm in its name, Panama hat palm is actually not a palm but plant resembling a 1-4 meter tall trunkless fan-palm with large, fan-shaped leaves.  These South American plants have had a hard time being well known.                    Most look like Palm trees some climbing other epiphytic they were later put under the Aroid family due to their unusual flowers. Later given their own family and found they were more closely related to Pandanus. This species grows in a large clump with fan like leaves 3 to 4 feet across held up high like umbrellas. The flowers are large and yellow and have long string like pollen. Leaves are used for crafts.               C. palmata is sometimes also referred to as "Jipijapa," the name of a town in Ecuador where some hats are made. Despite its name, the famous "Panama hat" did not originate in Panama at all, but in Ecuador, where a thriving hat-weaving industry utilizes the leaves of Carludovica palmata. It takes six young leaves from C. palmata, commonly referred to as the "Panama hat palm," to make one hat.                     Panama hats are also manufactured in Mexico and other areas of tropical America where C. palmata grows.
Panama Hat Palm        The flowers are like a bunch of white spagettis, the fruit is green on the outside and bright red inside. The petioles are sheathing at the base of distinctly palmlike, deeply lobed leaves. The flowers are unisexual, with both male and female flowers on the same plant. Seeds are very small, and birds eat the fruits and disperse the seeds. A very palm-like plant but with cylindindrical petioles (pretty uncommon in the palm world)- makes huge, densely packed clumps of plant- likes tons of water. If you want one of this and one of that, it gets hard to discount much as each different species requires it's own prep & packing, then at USDA each has to be unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It takes my wife and I, a day to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if you can understand.
