For the PR, HE might. Photo Ops are prepared and posed appearances with a designed result. The phoney pictures of him "working" while on vacation are one example of a photo op project. There he was in work gloves and new jeans holding a shovel that was so clean and new that they hadn't had time to take the big label off of the blade.

Oh I didn't know you were talking about the photos and video of him in TX.... I thought it was the last couple days....
what would you like the President that is in office, under these circumstances to be doing? He is going to NY tommorow, he was at the pentagon and the hospital in D.C. he is meetings talking to foriegn leaders, I know that Clinton would be of more comfort to most, but he not the President any longer. Thats wonderful what Clinton is doing down there in NY, but there are a lot of others comforting and doing too...

I don't think it was a 'photo op' and I don't know what you guys mean when you say that.
Let me explain how it works NearTheSea. If Bush isn't in front of the camera talking he is avoiding his responsibility, if he is in front of the camera talking it is a photo op.
Not everyone feels that way but there are some that are resigned to finding fault in anything he does.

I'd like him to get off of the phone, stop with the weepy appearances, not go to New York, stop seeking money, nevermind trying to look good, and just go get this guy and his followers and bring them back here in chains for his next photo op.

NearTheSea and Uaru - I'm afraid you're both confused. Obviously they meant Clinton when they mentioned Photo-op. Afterall, Clinton knew that Bush was scheduled to be there in the a.m. Not that I'm saying it's possible that Clinton would schedule a photo opportunity designed to upstage our President during a time of crisis. Of course he would NEVER do that, huh? Some people are sooooo gullible. Thankfully Bush's approval ratings in the way he's proceeded are in the 90% range with the rest of America. (ABC Poll)

Not quite, uaru. He's well past the time to come before the nation and assure us that he is taking charge. He missed that chance. Now he needs to go do something about the people who did this thing.

Ok, I see.
If Clinton were the President right now, right this minute, I wonder what he would be doing. I'm sure he wouldn't have time for meetings on what this country is going to do, but comforting the people all day on TV?
I still can't understand what people want.

If Bill Clinton hadn't just gotten back from Australia and places down that way, I'd say that his appearance in New York were a perfect bit of oneupmanship. But he did just get home to New York.

In case you all missed hearing this -
Remarks by the President After Two Planes Crash Into World Trade Center
Emma Booker Elementary School
Sarasota, Florida
9:30 A.M. EDT
THE PRESIDENT: Ladies and gentlemen, this is a difficult moment for America. I, unfortunately, will be going back to Washington after my remarks. Secretary Rod Paige and the Lt. Governor will take the podium and discuss education. I do want to thank the folks here at Booker Elementary School for their hospitality.
Today we've had a national tragedy. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country. I have spoken to the Vice President, to the Governor of New York, to the Director of the FBI, and have ordered that the full resources of the federal government go to help the victims and their families, and to conduct a full-scale investigation to hunt down and to find those folks who committed this act.
Terrorism against our nation will not stand.
And now if you would join me in a moment of silence. May God bless the victims, their families, and America. Thank you very much.
Remarks by the President Upon Arrival at Barksdale Air Force Base Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana
THE PRESIDENT: I want to reassure the American people that the full resources of the federal government are working to assist local authorities to save lives and to help the victims of these attacks. Make no mistake: The United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts.
I've been in regular contact with the Vice President, the Secretary of Defense, the national security team and my Cabinet. We have taken all appropriate security precautions to protect the American people. Our military at home and around the world is on high alert status, and we have taken the necessary security precautions to continue the functions of your government.
We have been in touch with the leaders of Congress and with world leaders to assure them that we will do whatever is necessary to protect America and Americans.
I ask the American people to join me in saying a thanks for all the folks who have been fighting hard to rescue our fellow citizens and to join me in saying a prayer for the victims and their families.
The resolve of our great nation is being tested. But make no mistake: We will show the world that we will pass this test. God bless.
There's at least 4 other speeches - all easily found on the White House homepage - and about a million other places on the net.
I agree NearTheSea... I'm not sure what more people need to hear. Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

It's a little late to assure that the people will be protected.
By the way, where is the director of the CIA? His head should be on a pole outside the World Trade Center.

Clinton has the latitude to be there, and do those things. In the back of his mind, he's probably thinking Thank God I'm not in the Oval Office right now

As each day passes, I feel more nervous about the possible outcome. I wonder how it'll be possible to go about day to day activities knowing a war could break out anyday.....and I'm in Canada. I'm sure it will take months before anything does happen, but how do you think the government will handle this?

"President Clinton down by the Armory
in New York City today supporting the distraught people who are wandering around carrying pictures of
their lost loved ones"
I believe Clinton cares.
But... Do you believe these people would be
wandering around the ARMORY!
I think he should have went to his office in Harlem and made a statement out on the sidewalk.

Latitude, meaning the freedom to do that.
I am sure that being President of these United States, does not permit him to be everywhere for everyone, ya think?
yeah I know you think he should not be there, but he is, so your either going to have to accept it, or turn off your tv and radio, live in a cave, I dunno.
I don't think that Bush is playing dominos with Cheney right now, but think what ya will krs, I'm going to bed.

Military families live with that possibility every day and we get up in the morning, take care of our families, go to work, and function normally, just like everyone else. What else would we do?
It sure beats cowering in a corner, worrying and wondering about what if.
Although I confessed to the tom that I wish the elder kitten had chosen another line of work instead of Ranger-hood.

"Yes, he's our president. But that does not exempt him from the scrutiny of the citizens. The fact that we Americans *can* criticise our leaders and the jobs they are doing (which they are elected to do) is one of the things that makes this country great."
Yes, Bunnicula, but there's a big difference between disagreement (and even criticism) and what occurs in this forum. With apologies to Gaffan, Bush-bashing is the fare of the day here, every day.
"He's well past the time to come before the nation and assure us that he is taking charge."
Bush has done that several times. He has repeated his resolve. But at this point, what is to say? Vague reassurances? Threats of retribution?
KRS, if you think you can do a better job, I urge you to run for president. I'm sure you will get at least four or five votes from posters in this forum. Then we can while away the hours criticizing your every word and, um ... movement.
I was channel-surfing the radio and came across the Howard Stern show. Howard's position: very simple, nuke Afghanistan. (Aside, maybe Bush should appoint Howard Stern to Press Secretary. Now THAT would be entertaining.)
