It's a grand old flag, isn't it Zilvy? Glad to see you're not wasting any time on the extremely unimportant things in life...

I plan to comb my hair...

Now that's a new trick, zilvy...replacing one message...telling me that I am a troublemaker that you would like to see drown with cement shoes with an entirely differen statement.

Wow! What's next?

"krs- .03%? Bah! You should add a few zeros in front of that three".

"Even if for some reason the gold can't be recovered, there's plenty of supply in the world. One company estimated the trade center hoard to be 0.3 percent of the global supply".

LOL! I did. Well, one anyway.

Muriel,
You've put out some pretty offensive statements about employees who don't even work for you, and bear in mind that without them your husband might not even have a job.

I guess this is a generalized session of feelings about unionization but I don't think it was meant to be that. The situation at hand in New York city, the cleanup and attempts at rescue and recovery are possibly hampered by the local union bylaws and that has very little to do with the wearing of T-shirts or retirement banquets.

Toke,

Well, I see that most of the gang is here now.

We should have a party, I guess.

krs...

Aren't the union workers being paid for their labor and the non-union folks, volunteers? Or are the union guys volunteering too?

This might be a stupid questions, but Im gonna ask it anyway.

What the hell does it matter if someone is in a union or not if they are VOLUNTEERING? They arent being paid. They are doing it because they WANT TO HELP. So, whats the deal?

Hepburn

I don't "snort". Do you?

I do think that it's time for a break.

Thank you dman for that information! I had heard that also. As I said earlier, I don't think that it was because of an issue of money that these volunteers were rejected.

dman...

I thought the union had a contract or something...that implied payment to me. I have to admit...I've taken a short break from the news. My eyes actually hurt.

I hadn't heard that anyone was being paid other than the emergency people, but I did see something about cleanup contracts having been awarded, or having been put out for bid, or something. I don't know. Does seem odd that anyone would complain about someone taking a job from someone who had no job yet in the first place.

The thing is here that clean up efforts have not even started they are in rescue recovery and investigateing..

The only clean up that has been done is so the stock market can open on monday..

and this was done by city workers.

Clean up and rebuilding will or is being contracted out yes but this effort hasn't started it weeks if not months in the future.

Right now at the site is FBI in some cases on hands and knees sifting through papers and stuff looking for any and all evidence to help make there case.

This morning one of the networks interviewed a welder/ironworker... guy had his welder's mask on top of his head, said he was from North Carolina, had been told his skills were needed, had slept on the sidewalk last night waiting to volunteer and contribute his labor. He pointed to bunches of torches sitting around unused, other welders standing around with him, and said they weren't going to be allowed to work.

Why not? The site clearing has already been contracted out to a few big construction companies. You can't work if they don't put you on their payroll. They wouldn't hire this guy from out of state because he "wasn't a member of the right union."
Contracted out indicates a "JOB"meaning paid, he doesn't belong to the right UNION so they wouldn't hire him!! Yes I am sure there must be gold in them thar hills. Otherwise use all that are available and willing. If they know there job and are instructed where and with whom to work what difference does it make which union you belong too?

Rather like my point of Raytheon's union workers not crossing a picket line of a union group who caused the demise of a business...even though Raytheon needed the items for the defense of the US.

If the defence of the country was in jeopardy I doubt that a picket line would have been in place.

In WW2 there was a song GIs sang about saving 3 shells for the end of the war. 1 shell was to be used on Congress, 1 shell was to be used on John Hormell (inventor of SPAM), the last shell was to be used on John L. Lewis (the head of the coalminer's union.)

Lewis organized slowdowns and work stopages at the height of the war. At times he was running neck and neck with Hitler as American's most hated man.

John L. Lewis did wage a fierce battle for the mineworkers.

He also founded the C.I.O. Congress of Industrial Organizations.

In this time of confusion, the one certainty that I can see is that this event will be used mercilessly to justify every possible political viewpoint and cause. In that respect, nothing has changed.

Let me try and explain something to those who have a rough time figuring simple things out. Within hours of the tragedy, all of the surplus fire, first aid, police, EMT and heavy equipment from 5 states was in Manhattan. It is now being turned away because they don't need people standing on each others shoulders. If you are not needed DO NOT COME HERE and be part of the problem!

Another thing is that this is a crime scene and most of the people standing on each other shoulders are FBI, police, army, and Fireman going over debris with SHOVELS. They do not need good old Joe from NC with his torch.

As to the "big contracts", i'm sure the mayor spent hours negotiating these!

Oh, BTW, you can stop paying $5/gal for gas. I can see the smoking hole from my roof and our gas prices haven't changed.

If anyone wants to help why don't they just do what is being requested?? Respirators, masks, gloves, with nobody in them. They are going crazy trying to figure out what to do with all the mountains of uneeded perishable goods they are STILL receiving.

Perhaps Lewis' greatest legacy was the creation of the UMWA Welfare and Retirement Fund in a contract with the federal government, signed in the White House with President Truman in attendance.

The UMWA Fund changed permanently health care delivery in the coal fields of the nation. The UMWA Fund built eight hospitals in Appalachia and established numerous clinics.

In 1964, Lewis was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian decoration, by President Lyndon Johnson.
