Helen......I'm very aware of the risks of demonizing the enemy. That's what disturbs me about my emotions. I have always been an utter pacifist, knee jerk liberal, anti-death penalty, you name it (well I do eat meat).

When I told my DH how much that woman's remarks disturbed me, he replied that she is a result of her upbringing, and that she couldn't be responsible for her anti-american feelings, as she had no other education to base her feelings on.

So, I don't know. I guess it's no different then the nuke'em till they glow mentality so many in our country have. I think just hearing it from a woman, a mother, that kind of blew me away. I wouldn't sacrifice my boys for anything......put me on the front line first!

BTW.....the woman journalist I spoke about was in the same prison as the American evangelists. She said they were being treated pretty decently. She had only been released herself a few days ago.

Helen Hi

about over-throwing the Taliban, it looks as if this might be part of it, and apparently help re-instate the 80-year old King...if the Pantagon can figure out and stop arguing about which weapons to continue using, or something of the sort. Generals butting heads

Latest news I saw: Taliban is asking US to "ease up" on the bombing, while they (Taliban people) discuss the situation...

Cutting it short tonight: my Spanish Soap Opera is coming on soon.."Carita de angel"

In need of diversion... Waving TTFN....

ohandrea - Hard to believe but other people THINK different than you. In that part of the world it is common for daughters to walk ahead of a couple in case there are any land mines. Not what you would do right? Children are a resource to use or use up there. A retirement plan and cheap labor.

Where, Gravid did you get this info? I don't doubt it, I'm just trying to understand.

Sorry it took me awhile to get back..got sidetracked in other threads.

Helen, I know what you mean about those children..I really do. And I understand what youre saying. I get in my modes and today, I wasnt feeling much sympathy for anyone other than the New Yorkers and Pentagon people...as well as those who are getting zapped with anthrax. Sorry for lashing at ya...it wasnt really AT you...it was TO you.

Terri, thanks for explaining. Like I just said to Helen, my smithyriddles were bunched today...not aimed at you, just in general sort of b!tching, lol.

I understand that!

You know, I'll bet that in real life, we would be very good friends!!!

I can't accept too much religion but if Terri could just shut up for a few minutes, I'll bet we could have a lot of fun too.

That may not make any sense to you but nevermind.

I'm not old enough to be your mother but I think that we could get along if you could forget the afterlife for a little while.

Gravid....that's the kind of information that my brain is starting to process.

Helen brings up the word "demonization". So I wonder what's real? Is the enemy that evil, or am I (and others) subconsciously girding up to do battle, and turning the "enemy" into demons?

So here is a thought. The Taliban and those who follow them obviously feel deeply that we are the evil doers. We are now starting to feel that it is "they" that are the evil ones. Do you suppose that this is a tribal instinct that kicks in when a nation is threatened?

I know too well from living on the West Coast how my parent's generation felt about people of Japanese heritage during WWII. Then the soldiers went to Japan and brought home brides, and the children of all different cultures of my parents generation are married to each other, and the past is all forgotten. Except now we are banded together against the evil Taliban!

The more I think about it, I do believe that this "demonization" is a tribal survival instinct that occurs when a culture is threatened. But is it appropriate in a modern society? Is the alternative blind naivety?

I'll let somebody else figure that out. Phew!

Hey look ^ it works that way too hehe

Seriously though I know not everybody likes Terri's religious talk but I don't mind it. I don't belong to her religion but it interests me to see what others think. I also don't mind if people come preaching at the door. I simply say no thank you or engage in conversation as is comfortable to me and I've never had anyone be pushy or rude. There are many many people I know who have converted to one religion or another. My point being the old saying

One mans junk is another man's treasure is true. You may hate it but there are people who don't mind.

Another way of looking at it is choice. I personally am awful glad to live here where I have my choice as to which, if any, religion I want to belong to.

Just random thoughts

Some more random thoughts...

I don't really see it as arrogant at least not in intent. Many of the people being preached too don't have a choice. I hate the concept of that..no choice.

I have the freedom to research and become any religion or lack thereof I want to. I could be Jewish or Catholic or Buddist or Muslim or Hindu or Atheist or heck I could make up my own religion. Sure most of the people in Afganistan are Muslim but because they want to be or because that's all they are allowed to be? Maybe some of them would like to be Baptist or Unitarian or Hindu or even Jewish.

If so many don't like Terri's religion or posts, why do they always crowd into her threads?

Do they wish to shut her up and run her off?

Do they simply enjoy bitching at her?

Or are they secretly seeking something missing in their lives but they are unwilling or unable to admit it?

One more small but significant piece of information regarding the subject of this particular thread. The couple pictured on the first page are not in Afganistan.

Bottom line is that they were in a place supposedly welcome by the government and where Christianity is not illegal. These facts may or may not change some people's opinion as to the worth of this couple's life. Could be that just by virture of their religion, some think they deserve any and all suffering they get.

I hope I am wrong and that no one here feels that way.

"I'm not old enough to be your mother"

My mother is 51 Helen, and you are...?

What's more, Helen, is that my mom just returned from a 4 day mountain trail ride. Not too long ago she went white water rafting. Besides being a postmaster 6 days a week, she is building a new house (with some help of course), barn, and landscaping the yard. I assure you that I will be dead long before she is.

My kids like to go to Granny's because she takes them to the lake, trains their horses, and races bicycles with them. Mommy is too out of shape to bike race and is a sissy baby when it come to horses.

Hi Jess!

It's a combination of boredom and curiosity. I generally read all posts.

I certainly don't have any desire to shut anybody up...I don't have to read anything here.
I don't enjoy bitching although religion can be a contentious topic.
I don't have anything secretly missing in my life that Terri or religion could fulfill.

It does interest me to see a "messenger of God" with such spiteful and mean spirited discourse. I am very interested in Psychology and that aspect of Terri's posts is of interest to me.

What, Jess, is your interest here...or should I say, who is your interest here?

Well gee, sorry. I guess with everyone else here being so kind, I pale in comparison.

chococake, my views are not always popular and I do often feel the need to defend
myself for some reason. I have always tried to be very careful to never (with the exception of that one incident that I was suspended over and tried to make amends for) to say ugly things about anyone. I don't because I honestly don't feel them. If I have and I owe anyone at all an apology for any personal insult then if pointed out it would be given. I have taken a beating from other people on a number of boards in the past. Anyway, I need to do rl stuff.

Shouldn't matter, Teri. You have supposedly taken on the emulation of Jesus as an ongoing goal in life. Posters here, for the most part, have not. If your best defense for being mean and spiteful is to say that others have shown those characteristics to you, then perhaps it is not our souls which are most in need of your attention.
