spazmodeus - is my positive spin showing?

I understand why the idea isn't palatable to many, but I'm looking at it from a business perspective. If I were in AW's shoes I'd probably do the same thing. The way I look at it CC verification is like an unloaded gun; it doesn't have a real bite but it may be intimidating enough to deter at least some of the bad guys.

And sure, I do want people to stick around, but if they don't I'll know where to find them. I'm just posting my honest feelings about it. I'm sure nobody listens to me anyway.

I have a question Diana...

Will our usernames be protected if we do not give in to this horrible and unethical request for CC numbers?

I would like to be sure that no others post under our names, which each carry a reputation, be it good, OR bad.

My info shows I've been here since March 22, 1999. It was actually before that.

If AW doesn't know me by now, then when? It's a little late to be asking me for proof of my existence...and to what purpose, anyway? Same old IP address guys.

Come to think of it, what about those who don't have CCs? Surely I'm not the only one!

For the record: I think this decision sucks. Big time sucks.

But when has AW ever listened to us, the lowly board users?

Having a CC on file that isn't charged isn't a big deal to me. I think it will make it difficult for those with multiple IDs sway argments against policies, companies, etc. via 'shill' posts.

Ditto to what Pocono said.

I'd hate to see anyone sully my reputation as a meanie by being all nice and stuff...

Hi pocono,

No other user will be able to register under your username should you decide to leave. We hope you will decide to stick around.

Perhaps AW would consider "grandfathering" in established users, allowing them to continue posting without CC verification, upon their request, and by a certain deadline? Any new users (or those who hadn't requested being grandfathered in by the deadline) would require CC verification.

Any chance of that, AW?

Pokey

I dunno, Toke. Lately, I lurk way more than I post, though I'd hate not being able to jump in when inspired.

Hi julesy,

Posters who have been banned from this message board will not be able to reactivate their accounts as the accounts have been permanently closed.

toke: yes, back in 99' if you remember (i think bobmills was still moderator then) the system puked and everyone got their original "joined" date messed up, and some got a March 99', some got a Jan. 99', etc.

It also "cleared" our number of posts at that time.

They never DID fix that, but then again, I guess it wasn't worth the effort either.

Uh, that'd be BOBmills?

Spaz, can you possibly believe that your having been offended at a 'gut' level by this has sway considering the number of times that you've been 'deeply' offended in the past?

Please choose a ficticious example for your question.

Thanks!

Breinhold: Sorry you had to come into this mess when you did. I'll definitely miss you.

I'll never be able to list everyone and everything that I love about this place. I just hope you'll all pull up a bar stool with Barry and the gang.

Here's something to remember me by:

OK, Joice, fair enough. I saw your post before you zapped the question and thought you were being coy.

For instance, bannedposterXY could not reactivate his old account, but could he activate a new id like bannedposterXX, as long as he put a cc on file?

I agree with RB that AW should grandfather in the presently 'in good standing' members.

With a CC on file, and an unmoderated board, does this mean, you could say things that were moderated before? Does putting a CC on file allow you to do all those things that were not within the community guidelines?

hmmm, do you take Discover?

I have no illusions that my posts have any sway here.

That said ...

I think the idea about grandfathering members in good standing would have been a fair and decent way to make this transition. Some of us have been here for years. Surely we have proven ourselves capable of "responsible posting" by now.

Since I haven't seen an answer to my question yet, I guess I'm gonna have to yell...

*waving paws in air*

Hey! Over here!

WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO DON'T HAVE CC'S???
