Stusi - you said...

"UNTIL such time as they are outlawed they should be leashed and fenced when not housed, knowing that no one will house them at all times. Don't you agree? Think for a moment before you answer. "

I'm not sure what you're asking here. By 'housed', do you mean 'in a house'?

My dogs go out twice a day (into my fenced and locked backyard) to do their business. Otherwise they're in the house.

Is that what you mean??

barbarake- Yes, of course.
krs- I am still trying to get your strange analogy. There is a much higher % of Jewish doctors in the medical community than there are Pits or Rotties in the dog community. The percentage/number ratio of injuries from these breeds far exceeds the percentage/number of deaths from the docs.

Any reputable person who wants a large dog should have to prove that they know what they are doing and that they have the facilities (sp?) to keep it safely.

Unfortunately that would create an impossible regulatory nightmare. And it still would provide no guarantee that a potentially dangerous dog would not harm someone's child. This is not like drunk driving where there may be several transgressions before real damage is done. The first time a pit bull goes off on someone's kid, the kid is either killed or irreparably harmed. In my opinion, the limited benefits of owning a pit bull do not outweigh the dangers.

When I was young I was taught anything with a mouth bites.

Over the years I have seen what has happened to the pit bull happen to many pedigree dogs.
Even collies ,shepherds ,Dalmatians or any dog that suddenly becomes a form of fashion statement with humans.
Some people have dingo's some have wolf husky mixes, some have chows or Shar-Pei and everyone of them can tear you up . the list is very long.
The pit bull is focused on because it is overpopulated in inner cities and back woodsy rural areas.
I can tell you that if you exterminated every pit bull on earth the same people would just pick up on a new breed of dog that is intimidating and aggressive.
in the 1960's it was the German shepherd then in the 1970's in urban areas it was the Doberman that was the mean dog of choice.
chows gained popularity as soon as the same type of person found out they were aggressive.
then came the rottweiler.
the 1990's was the decade of the shar-pei until people realized they were bred to be guard dogs not playmates or status symbols.

this is the problem.....people.

I do not own a pit bull but I have known many very nice ones and just as many terrible ones.
I own a mutt (the best kind of dog).

This week a 12 year old boy was mauled by a Pit Bull. In South Florida we are averaging a Pit Bull attack once every two weeks.

They have decided to issue stiff fines if a Pit Bull bites once and to put the dog to death if it bites twice.

I read that the prosecutors have not presented enough evidence to show that the dogs were vicious at any time before the attack. That's the problem with Rottweillers, they can be so good and then snap like a wild animal.

In this case. the two adult dogs and four puppies killed the little girl in 15 minutes.
