EPITAPH TO A DOG
NEAR this spot
Are deposited the Remains
of one
Who possessed Beauty
Without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
And all the Virtues of Man
Without his Vices.
This Praise, which would be unmeaning flattery
If inscribed over Human Ashes,
Is but a just tribute to the Memory of
"Boatswain," a Dog
Who was born at Newfoundland,
May, 1803,
And died at Newstead Abbey
Nov. 18, 1808.
When some proud son of man returns to earth,
Unknown to glory, but upheld by birth,
The sculptor's art exhausts the pomp of woe,
And storied urns record who rests below.
When all is done, upon the tomb is seen,
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his master's own,
Who labors, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonored falls, unnoticed all his worth,
Denied in heaven the soul he held on earth-
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.
Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power-
Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy smiles hypocrisy, thy words deceit!
By nature vile, ennobled but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye, who perchance behold this simple urn,
Pass on-it honors none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friend's remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one-and here he lies.

hair2 I am so sorry for you and your family. I think we all know the pain involved in loseing a very much loved family pet. I feel for your little girl too.
Yes this is a good thread. Make use of it as you grieve for shadow.

I sure love these boards you are all so kind.
The house is so lonely I keep expecting him to bark to come in the house...
But I came to my senses so many people on these boards have lost kids, parents not to mention 9-11 and that is so much worse so I have to put my chin up, at least he was happy all those years and my human family is still alive.
keep saying to my self "one day at a time" geez should we start a 12 step program for grieving pet owners?

I CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAW WITH TWEEDY,,,SHE JUST SHOWED ME ALL OF HER SURVIVAL IN THE WILDS TRAINING. TREE CLIMBING, 8 FEET IN ONE SECOND.....CONCEALMENT, CAMO, PROWLING,SLIT TRENCH DIGGING, I DON'T THINK YOU WOULD CALL IT A FOX HOLE IN THIS CASE.
UNDER THE FENCE,OVER THE FENCE....OVER THE WALL,,,,,LEAPS FROM CAR TO CAR,,,,,,NOT MOVING!!!! CATCHES A FLY,,,,YUMMY IN THE WILDS SURVIVAL FOOD. AND STILL HAD TIME TO LOOK UP AT ME AND SAY, JACK,GIVE ME A HUG.

WOW!!!!! DID I END UP WITH ONE SMART KITTY. TWEEDY JUST SOLD HER FIRST HONDA GENERATOR ON E BAY!!!!!!!! AND SHE IS SELLING SOME KAT TOYS TOO. THIS IS ONE GO GETTER. I TAUGHT HER ALL ABOUT E BAY AND E MAIL,,,SURE SHE MAKES SOME TYPOS BUT WHAT THE HECK SHE'S A KAT. SHE IS GOOD!!!!! I TRIED TO SELL THAT GENERATOR LAST WEEK AND THEY ONLY WENT TO $150.00 MY RESERVE WAS $170.00 I PUT TWEEDY ON THE GENERATOR AND THEY SAW THE SMALL SIZE OF IT AND IT WENT FOR AN INCREDIBLE,,,,$203.00!!!!!!!!
