FYI:
The office is closed on the weekend,
open M-F 9-5 PST. But this is definitely the White House opinion line. If you want to voice your opinion directly on the possibility of war, would you please:
Phone the White House at 202-456-1111 . A machine will detain you for only a moment and then a pleasant live operator will thank you for saying "I oppose" -- or "I approve of" -- the proposed war against Iraq. The president wants to know.
Tell him.

Heh, saabsister...
When I called, there was a quick "press one" navigation to the "leave a comment for the president" extension. I was told all comment operators were busy and put on hold. In less than three minutes, a cheerful young man came on the line and asked what state I was calling from. He then asked what I'd like to tell the president today. (hahaha, I did not take advantage of my initial impulse. )
I said, simply, "I want the preseident to know that I oppose going to war with Iraq."
The young man thanked me, said he'd tell the president and we hung up.
Took less than five minutes.

And you are still here to tell about it!
Thanks Pat! I'll call and give the number to others I know that would like to give their opinions on the topic.

Pat
I'd like to hear you tell him what you really think. LOL! Now that Ashcroft has your location on the "list", you may as well call back.

Hey, Robin -- go post the number over at the AW emigre's site! Pretty please? (And feel free to use my experience to illustrate how the actual call process goes.)
Heh, Helen, it did occur to me that I was placed on hold so the FBI could trace my call. It also occurred to me that if I live in a country where I need to be afraid of my government I'd better get even more involved.
Edited to add: LOL, Snowy! It's PST because the email I got urging me to call was from a west coast friend of mine who knows I'm not great with math and shifting time zones.

Pat,
I did a reverse look up before I called. After all, my house is being circled by black helicopters looking for a possible terrorist. Haahaha...
The address that I received was Peter Skaggs, Washington, D.C. 20500?

OK
I did another search...It's 1600 PA Ave.
According to Switchboard.com look up the number is listed to Peter Skaggs, 1600 PA Ave., Washington, DC. Of course, that's the White House address but who is Peter Skaggs?
Another search identifies the number correctly.

Did anyone else see on CNN today that the VP of Iraq suggested Saddam and Prez Smirk have an old-fashioned duel to settle their differences? The WH declined the offer.
I think Wolf Blitzer had difficulty keeping a straight face while reporting this and I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.

It should be Presidential shrub and his dad the Ex-Pres and Saddam and his mean son. After all the war is because the ex-pres hates Saddam [he said so] and the shrub is mad because they wanted to kill his daddy. [he said that too]
If it is a Hattfield and McCoy type of thing then I think a duel would be the right thing to do.
Funny that Saddam would suggest it.I've always thought wars should be fought by the leaders. If they were there would be few of them.
Is his name really Wolf Blitzer?

Great idea! The proceeds could be used to replace some of the money needed to be able to keep Social Security solvent, since its future was sacrificed to the more noble goal of granting massive tax cuts to the obscenely rich.

Showing live on the CIRCUS network:
Ass kicking leaders
In this corner, the challenger, Saddam "the mother of all battles" Hussein weighing in at x kilos.
In this corner, President George W "the Shrub" Bush weighing in at x pounds.
Will Shrub surpass his father and kick ass? Stay tuned to see John Ashcroft parade around the ring with signs and portents in between rounds.
