The police took into custody the driver of a white van who made a call to police as they had requested. Seems almost too easy considering his skill at avoiding being caught. Let's hope!!!!!!!!!

Hi stusi! I sure hope so. What's amazes me, is the kind of guns you can buy in the U.S. My Gawd! What do you need all those types for? And they're talking about indentifying all new guns for striation marks...?? What good will that do?

Just a note - here in Canada, if someone broke into my house and tried to attack me, if I had a gun a shot the intruder, I'd be charged. It's illegal to fire a gun at a person here, no matter what the circumstances. You can't even own hand guns here without special permission.

kraft- they are now saying that two men were arrested. I believe in the US if you shoot someone who has broken into your home it may depend on whether or not they were armed.

Right, Kraftdinner,
Who needs guns like these?

http://www.nytimes.com/2002/10/20/opinion/20SULL.html

The recently arrested men may not have any relation to the sniper. I doubt that this sniper will surrender.

oh no- did I just hear those two men were just illegal aliens? One was going to use the phone and the other was going to buy some coffee. Please tell me I heard the radio wrong!

nharmon- these guys were in the wrong place at the wrong time-not the guys!
The cops got a letter from the sniper asking them to call him at a certain time. Apparently they spent so much time analyzing the letter that they blew it and failed to call him by the designated time!!!!!

nharmon...you heard that exactly right. Now the sniper knows what will happen if he calls from a telephone booth.

Valleygirl...LOL! Are your guns of the armor-piercing, tracer and incendiary .50-caliber bullet variety that can bring down a helicopter or do yours just kill people and animals?

Another shooting this A.M.- a man was shot at a bus stop in Maryland.

The sniper has returned to the area from which he fired his first shot into the Michaels arts and crafts store....about a mile from my house. The victim was either getting on or off a bus. Since it's an area where busses begin their routes, there is some speculation that the victim may be a bus driver. There are wooded areas nearby being searched by bloodhounds.

Cell phones in the area are overloaded. Witnesses are being encouraged to call 911.

It's a shame that those immigrants will be deported. Thing is, most of the illegal immigrants from Mexico area are pretty peaceful. The US let those terrorists over here, even granted them VISAs MONTHS after 9/11, but they do everything they can to keep out Mexicans/hispanics. I haven't met an immigrant from down that way yet that was violent in general, they wanted freedom. Makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Helen ~
I know it usually takes a lot to rattle your cage but please be safe!
sheesh ~ I'm not sure what that means.
Stay in the house, away from the windows, not even leaving to go to the mailbox?
Don't take the trash down to the curb?
Order your groceries on-line & have them delivered?
Living where you are would have me in an obsessive paranoid anxiety attack.
*sending hugs to you & your neighbors*

Hi zoomin!

We were planning to go out today to visit a friend in Cambridge but the traffic is blocked in every direction...so we are grounded.

Mezusas

I agree with you on that. Those poor guys were in the wrong place at the wrong time. After that scary experience, they may be happy to return to Mexico.

The bus driver died.

There are a lot of apartment developments within walking distance from the shootings in Montgomery County, Maryland. I believe that the sniper lives in this area and may be walking rather than driving. The Montgomery County police probably have this possibility under consideration.

Hi zoomin! It's always nice to see you.
I agree with you... Helen must stay inside for awhile and that's NOT a joke Helen!!!

This is nuts. It's the procession of funerals that gets to me. This guy must be a hunter because of his stealth. It would make more sense if he was on foot.

I always come back to the dealth penalty in these types of situations. Why should the tax dollars, from the husband of the lady that was just buried let's say, go to pay for housing the man (if caught) that shot her? I'm against the death penalty, but in these cases, my belief is really put to the test.

Helen has had shootings near her and a man was killed in my town, though on the other side of it. You just continue to do what you have to do. I don't make too many unnecessary trips but I'm not going to be captive to this SOB. I feel sorry for the children who have had to deal with the ramifications of this. When I do my morning walk, I see these little kids waiting for the schoolbus with their parents or, worse yet, walking to the bus stop all alone. It's awful that they have to think of their safety from some nutball.

Saabsister, I know you have to live your life and it's easy for me to say that, not being near you, but if you were my mom or sister, I would say the same thing. Sorry.

A threatening message was just released from the sniper by Police Chief Moose of Montgomery County, Md...."Your children are not safe anywhere at any time."

I am picturing a totally automated response system being make because of these sort of attacks that works like a counter battery artillery. It would sense the incoming bullet with sub-millimeter waves - calculate the trajectory and return fire to the source before the first round even hits. all the technology is doable.

kraftdinner, I understand what you're saying. Heck, my mother and all my siblings and their children live in Northern Virginia. There's just a limit to how secluded you can become, so you exercise caution when you're out there. I can tell you that there is absolutely no line for gasoline and stores are emptier.

I understand what you are saying, saabsister. I haven't changed my routine because the odds of being shot by this sniper are so small. Children in my neighborhood are still playing outside and walking back and forth to school every day. As you mentioned, it's a great time to go shopping because a lot of people are staying at home. I got a hair cut yesterday and there was only one other customer in the shop....same with the gas station. I usually have to go around the block a couple of times to get into the station. Yesterday only a couple of cars were at the station.
I wonder if the new message will affect school attendance tomorrow.

Hey Krafty Always nice to see you, too!
Helen
Sorry your trip was grounded ~ I hope you get to venture out again soon. I'm sure your friend in Cambridge would like to get his/her eyeballs on you to make sure you're really okay!
You sound like you are handling things very well.
<insert NAG here>
Please don't get too comfortable with the pleasures of being one of the few people out & about.
SaabSister
That NAG goes out to you, too!
I know you don't want to be 'held captive' by this Lunatic but try to stay on the cautious side rather than the brave!

A backyard in Tacoma, WA is being searched for shell casings. Apparently a current or former member of the military lives or lived there. Let's all hope they find a connection.

I'd like to see you take one of the new .50 Cal rifles & try to shoot down a helicopter. They weigh 30#'s anDdmore. Try holding that "offhand" and hitting anything. You would stand a better chance of hitting it with a .22 Cal single shot.

Besides, it isn't the firearm that is killing anyone. It is the idiot behind the firearm.

They now believe that it IS linked to Al Quedia (sp?). They have ties to "camp ground zero" which is a Terrorist training camp.

John Allen Williams (Muhammad) has arrest warrant issued for him.
