Hatchet-wielding man attacks family

LAGUNA HILLS, Calif., Oct 31, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Members of a Southern
California family escaped unharmed Thursday after a hatchet-wielding man barged into an Orange County
home and assaulted his former in-laws and his own 10-year-old daughter before being felled by a single
shotgun blast.

Orange County sheriff's officials said the 30-year-old suspect, whose name was not immediately released,
was killed by a shotgun blast fired by his ex-wife's boyfriend during a melee that began when the suspect
allegedly broke in and tried to force his daughter to drink an unidentified liquid that was believed to be poison.

The girl was staying at her grandparents' home with her mother and her mom's boyfriend, who eventually
ended the terrifying attack with a shotgun after he and the two grandparents were struck with the hatchet.

"The boyfriend was able to break away and go to a back room where he armed himself with a shotgun and
was able to fire one shot," Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Amormino told reporters outside the home in the normally
peaceful middle class neighborhood.

Detectives were still sorting out the circumstances at daybreak, however Amormino said it appeared that the
intruder had recently been bailed out of jail after being arrested during the weekend for violating a court
restraining order and assaulting his former wife.

According to the victims, the suspect broke into the home of his ex-wife's parents at around 1 a.m. PST and
tried to force his daughter to drink the liquid. The girl's grandparents intervened and were struck with the
hatchet. The grandfather, reportedly a retired Marine Corps sergeant major, fired at the attacker with a
handgun, but missed. The daughter's boyfriend joined the fray and was also injured by the hatchet before
fetching the shotgun from another room.

The Orange County Register reported that a gunshot could be heard on a tape of the 911 placed by the
ex-wife, who implored the emergency operator to: "Get over here. Get over here."

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of unspecified wounds that were described as
non-life threatening. The girl was not hurt.

This story points up the need for more-stringent hatchet-control laws. The
power of the Hatchet Lobby is such that in most states, anyone can buy a
hatchet--there's no waiting period, licensing requirement or even limit on
the number of hatchets you can buy. Don't get us wrong; we're not for a
complete ban on hatchets. Contrary to the 'ax nuts' at the National Hatchet
Association, responsible hatchet control poses no threat to legitimate
wood-choppers.

Wow!

It would be interesting to know what caused such anger!

It's lucky for everyone that he only had a hatchet.

Although terrible, that's nothing compared to the damage caused by nail clippers. If you have the deluxe model with the separate nail file, you could poke someone's eye out, or both eyes if you're quick. If you're lucky enough to find clippers that cut, while they're laying there eyeless, you could clip the victim's nails really short to cause added grief. I don't even like talking about it.

Hi Helen! Yeah, those damn spoons are nothing more than well disguised shivs. I think God has to share some of the blame for giving us eyes that can be poked out.

I'll bet that the family is going to sue the daylights out of the hatchet maker for being so irresponsible as to make a hatchet that could be used in anger to kill someone!

There was a case in my neighborhood in which a hit man was hired to kill a mother, her quadriplegic son and his nurse.
The hit man used a book for directions on how to carry out the murders and as a result, the publisher of the book was sued.

"A publisher has agreed to stop selling a book on how to be a hit man and will pay millions of dollars to two families who claimed a hired assassin followed the manual's instructions to kill their loved ones."

So, it wouldn't surprise me to find that the hatchet maker could be sued. But, fortunately, nobody was killed with the hatchet in this case.

"But worse is the idea that words rather than deeds must be punished."

How exactly does this limit free speech? Inciting to riot is a crime. So should be "cookbooks" that suggest how to commit murder, etc. There is a VAST difference between political expression and murder.

Bottom line, if you CHOOSE to exercise free speech, you also must shoulder the burden of responsibility for those words.

God, guns and America.

But if you outlaw books, only outlaws wil have books....

But in the hatchet situation....

Imagine the carnage that would have ensued if he had a gun instead of a hatchet...

Right!

The family would be dead and the killer, if caught, would be in jail.

Mlecher - A hatchet would do a much more 'messy' job than a gun.

A person can kill someone with their hands. Shall we take away everyone's hands? The instrument doesn't kill, the person does.

Automobiles are regestered and the drivers of those automobles kill more people a year than all gun related deaths combined.

Isn't that proof that cars are more deadly that guns!

A person determined to cause harm to others will find an instrument to do his deed.

In this case, it shows that a responsible law abiding gun owner stopped a one man crime spree. The idiot with the hatchet will never again have the opportunity to harm anyone else.

bear - Agreed. So let's vote to take everyone's car away. Maybe then those who are against gun ownership will realize how some people feel about having their guns taken away. Then again...maybe not.

Doctors kill 150,000 people a year. Far more than guns do. Look how closely they are regulated? There are far more guns than doctors. Should we ban doctors next? You do not have a constitutional right to own an axe, car or be a doctor

Now that you have gotten all that STUPIDITY OUT and the Moronic comparisons.....

Guns are used to INTENTIONALLY kill people
Cars and Doctors mainly kill UNINTENTIONALLY

Guns are designed SPECIFICALLY to kill people
Knives, Hatchet, etc. are designed for other purposes(that is why they are "messy, slow and inefficient" at killing)
