Junque - I don't think the possibility of mechanical failure in a 20 year old craft is all that unreasable.

We may actually be forced to agree during this thread

Something just crossed my mind - don't we have some men at the Space Station? And how are we going to bring them home?

" And you are right. I'm sorry for lashing out. I just saw another board full of this God nonsense and lost it when I saw it at the roundtable. I thought this forum was a bit less right wing and a bit more advanced in thought and understanding. "

Canvid

I don't understand what belief in God and being right wing have to do with each other..your remarks are callous and unfeeling towards those who want to express their feelings in their own way..

God bless the shuttle astronauts, and God help their families.

edited to add..shame on you.

Wgm - We still have Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour not to mention the Russian crafts.

Although 28 years seems old, it was designed and built to make 100 flights.

wgm...I just heard that they have a shuttle there.

"A spokesman for Rosaviakosmos, the country's space agency, said the launch on Sunday of a Progress cargo ship to take supplies to the ISS would go ahead on schedule."

The Progress M-47 ship is due to lift off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, which Russia leases from the ex-Soviet Central Asian state.

The mission is due to take fuel, equipment, food and documents to the crew of the ISS, built mainly by Russia and the United States, with the participation of space agencies from Europe, Canada and Japan.

hi neo - that's true - I was thinking that NASA would suspend the space program like they did after the last Challenger diaster; but you are right about the Russian crafts.

There's already been at least one ebay auction for Colunbia debris. It's cancelled now but watch for more.

You are all missing the misunderstanding here.

Cravid does not understand what a blessing IS.

It is not ant statement on what has happened.
It is a prayer, a wish, for the future.
For a better future for the person blessed.
If it has no power in your eyes fine it does no harm.

It is not at all like some crazy preacher getting up and telling parents at a funeral that God took their little child. I'm sure that's the sort of sillyness you are equating it with.

It more like saying - May things go better for you but with the specific wish their God grants it.

What harm even if they are wrong?

Why do I sense a lot of bad late night talk show jokes about the the largest number of remains of this first flight of an Isreal astronaut landing in Palestine Texas?

One comment. Laurel Clark had a cousin that died in the World Trade Center 911.

We live rather close to the family of Laurel Clark and the TV station did a great piece on her as with the others. The night before the landing she sent emails to her family members saying what a priviledge it was to be able to fly this mission. How amasing it was to be above earth and see the spectacular view. How lucky she was to be chosen. The astronauts knew before they left that they might not return but still they chose to go, to help in anyway they can. My hat is off to them and their families and knowing that this will be with them the rest of their lives but knowing they were doing something they all wanted to do.

And ALL of them were only in their 40's.

One of the first Americans (I don't remember which one) to fly into space was asked by a reporter if he was a relegious man.

He stated that "after the experience of seeing the wonder of Earth from space, even a athiest would convert to a believer, because only GOD could have created such a place"

Could the shuttle have been hit by an upper atmosphere electrical charge ?
