And there were alot of 16 year olds that went into the military during WWII. They knew what they were signing up for and did a great job to boot.

The fact remains that persons from lower socio-economic groups have increased pressure to join the military.
Schools like the almost exclusively Hispanic, Gen. Geo. S. Patton Military Academy in Chicago, offer an opportunity for children from lower socio-economic groups to improve their life quality prospects through a superior funded military education, an education which would otherwise be unavailable to these groups. Once in these schools, there is little doubt that these (younger and more impressionable minds) will be subject to greater pressure to enlist than they may otherwise have experienced in a non-military funded school.
A very cynical way to allegedly improve a poorer person’s prospects for increased quality of life through education, by making military exposure a prerequisite.
Sure they know what they are signing, but for many the object was to improve quality of life and that may only be at even higher risk of failing during future, little anticipated by the youth, times of military activity.
