"Helen, so you read the Peoples Daily of China."

Nearthesea
I read any dam thing that I want to read. But unlike some people, I don't believe every thing that I read. I simply posted that information for it's interest level. It may or may not be true.

http://www.worldpress.org/gateway.htm This is a page of world newspapers from which you may read different viewpoints throughout the world. Try it and broaden your horizons!!!

"Honestly, those articles on what the Chinese gov't are doing about SARS is 'window dressing"

You can say that about many articles from newspapers in this country also. It's very difficult to find a newspaper without some slant or as you call it window dressing. Their paper controlled by the government has slant. Our papers controlled by corporate greed have slant.

"This thing could have been going on longer than we know"
.
No sh*t!!! That is very true and probably longer that China knew also. Why is every foreign country some evil dragon to you?

"The time they'll REALLY get concerned is when it affects the Party leaders, there are a finite number of communist party leaders, where there is an infinite number of Chinese citizens.

duh

That's just your uninformed opinion.

Read a few papers before you make a decision.

LOL!

I'll read what I want, I'll talk to actual people in real life, and I'll make my own decisions.

What makes it 'uninformed' to you? because you don't agree with it. tough

Why are you bringing up the fact that your relatives are from China?

You're not reading again.

If there was a virus outbreak in the U.S., (hypothetically) would the people that got the virus still have to pay their own medical bills?

I think you're right, junquemama.

Ordinarilly, if you don't have money or insurance in the US, you are out of luck if you need medical care.

There are over forty million people without health insurance in the United States. Emergency rooms are required to accept patients but being admitted to the hospital requires insurance. The people who use the emergency room are billed for that charge.
Since Sars requires ventilation, possibly for several days, I don't know how these people will survive. Maybe some kind of special arrangements will be made since people with the disease have to be quarantined.

Helen, the big problem with those piece is the same problem China is having with AIDS reporting. Regoinal officias are afraid to give bad news to the government so they lie or fudge the numbers.

If this virus gets out of hand, I would worry about how Americans will be able to pay for something like this, especially the poor.

Important question about SARS........

I knew that when you get exposed to SARS you probably show symptoms and get it or not in ten days.

What I did not know until I saw a news program tonight on NBC about a man who had SARS is he is still in isolation after a month because they have no idea if you are infecteous before or after you display symptoms. If you still can give it to someone after you recover then with the thousnads of people who have had it we will never stop it. You can't keep that many people isolated for months and months.

Oh go away Linda...You're such a pest.

Twenty two people in Maryland have been suspected of having sars...all but two have been ruled out. So, there will be a lot of people with colds or flu who become suspected of sars.

One victim in Maryland was a doctor who went to work with fever of 101. Luckily, he didn't see any patients before he was sent home.

If it is a bio weapon it is a dud.
You'd expect a deliberate weapon to have a fatality rate more like Ebola.

"Do you think that the Chinese government is as completely inept as their handling of both this and their AIDS crisis would lead one to believe or could it be a policy of deliberate inaction allowing these diseases to take over where their own population control methods have failed?"

I hope it’s just incompetence.

Unfortunately, today and possibly as it has long or always been, our leaders seem to miss the objective.
‘Communist’ and ‘Capitalist’ systems alike work within the one global economy, no nation seems to be an island.
Too often ‘our’ leaders seem to be acting for economic considerations, which doesn’t necessarily mean what I think the ‘objective’ should be, ie. the ‘greater good’.

Less than a week ago, this was ‘smaller’ than 9/11, in under 1 more week, (I calculated based only on the 5.925% Single day increase sited by NearThesea) it will be ‘bigger’ than Bhopal.
Today 4702 Deaths
1 Day 4980
2 Days 5275
3 Days 5588
4 Days 5919
5 Days 6270
.
31 Days 29,664
2 Months 166,796 Deaths.
3 Months 937,863 Deaths.
3 + 2 Days 1,052,292 Deaths.
4 Months over 5 Million
5 Months over 29 Million
6 Months over 166 Million

Edited to correct error, these figures are not for 'deaths' but rather, 'infections'.

The only reason I doubt that it is a bio weapon is that they would have fallen all over themselves to control the situation immediately if it was and that definately ws not done.

One of the strange things however is that one of the guests on Washington Week tonight was saying that Chinese hospitals were hiding SARS patients frmo WHO officials, basically wheeling them out the back door whenever officials entered the hospital.
