This is what I mean when I say that no matter what Bush does it will *never* be the right thing. You guys #*!@ and #*!@ all the time about how he's gone ahead without other countries/supposed allies approval, etc. Then when he *does*, as in this case, decide that other countries should be involved in dealing with this demanding little tyrant, because it affects more than our country, you say he should do it alone because that's what Jong Il wants. [because he came to us.] LOL

South Korea can't decide *what* they want. Everytime I read where they stand it's changed. So, let them negotiate and PAY for whatever agreement THEY work out with NK. As it stands right now, they want to improve relations with NK. Fine...let them PAY for the construction of their power plants. Maybe they won't lie to them like they did to us while our hard earned tax dollars were being paid to NK so they wouldn't.

And yes, I fully agree with Reamond and others that say if he pulls anything funny.....let him have it. These tyrants need to learn they don't threaten the US....without there being consequences.

We also failed to live up to the commitment. We comitted to a completion date and look to be missing it by 5 years. Looks that way to me too. BUT the reason *WHY* we were unable to complete our commitment might just be relevant. And I just figured since this deadline was decided during the clinton administration all you democrats would know what held things up.

When did I ever say he should do it alone? To be quite honest, I'm in a a very seperatist frame of mind these days. Let NK do whatever the hell they want. If they get out of line, let China and Japan deal with them. We shouldn't do jack.

I answered what I would do if I had to act. Of course had I said what I said above I would have been attacked for that statement as well so why bother asking the question?

All anyone wants to hear is "Nuke the Bastards" anyway.

"We also failed to live up to the commitment. We comitted to a completion date and look to be missing it by 5 years."

"I asked before if anyone knew why the completion date was not met, do you? "

My understanding is that the U.S., South Korea and Japan signed a treaty in 1994. We (US, S.Korea, Japan) would build some nuclear power plants for them (N. Korea), and they would give up their weapons programs.

The power plants are definitely way behind schedule because of lack of money. It is not just the U.S.'s fault - S. Korea and Japan also are at fault.

In any case, the N. Koreans have abided by the terms of the treaty for nine years and they are tired of us not living up to our part of the treaty.

I heard part of this on Public Radio and part of it through some research several months ago. I make no claims that it is 100% correct and I won't be insulted if anyone comes up with (verifiable) information to the contrary.

Hell, let's just have Klinton bribe N Korea with another $25 Mil to keep the whole thing quite & to say it was just an April fools joke.

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean newspapers reported on Monday North Korea (news - web sites) had expressed a willingness during talks last week with the United States to scrap its nuclear plans but only simultaneously with reciprocal U.S. moves.

The JoongAng Daily quoted government sources as saying there were enough "positive aspects" in the proposal to warrant consideration.

North Korea has said it made a "new bold proposal" to the United States during the three-day talks in Beijing last week, but has not given any public details. Washington has also not elaborated on what it heard at the negotiating table.

Chinese officials also took part in the discussions, during which U.S. administration sources say North Korea told Washington it had atomic bombs and could produce more.

"The sources said North Korea proposed, on the first day of the talks, a package of exchanges with the United States, offering to dismantle its nuclear weapons program in exchange for steps by the United States to move toward normal relations with the North," the JoongAng Daily said.

It said one of the sources had said the North Korean proposal was for simultaneous and comprehensive steps to settle differences. The North appeared to drop a demand for a non-aggression pact but asked for a guarantee of no first use of U.S. nuclear weapons, one senior official told the newspaper.

"What was notable, the sources said, was North Korea's expressed willingness to scrap, not just suspend, its nuclear development programs," the JoongAng Daily said.

Another newspaper, the Dong-a Ilbo, said North Korea had outlined a "road map" that included the United States resuming heavy fuel oil shipments that were canceled after Washington said North Korea told it last October it had an active nuclear program despite a 1994 deal to freeze its atomic activities.

"It contained North Korea's scrapping of nukes as a response," the newspaper said, referring to the road map.

"We cannot reveal specifically what North Korea's proposal was, but among them were positive factors worth considering," it quoted a high-ranking government official as saying.

"That is why the United States said it would consider the North's proposal and evaluated the talks as fruitful, in spite of the United States claiming North Korea possesses nuclear weapons," the newspaper quoted the official as saying.
