Besides principle or ideal reasons to deport and deny DLs to illegal immigrants, there is a very practical reason to stop illegal border crossings as well as deporting illegals.
Our previous waves of immigrants were managed and planned. Not only did we have jobs in our growing factories, but we also were still homesteading in the western railroad lands.
We defintely need massive immigration if we're going to shore up social security and divert our aging demographic curve.
Our local, state and Federal govts have a job to do regarding immigration - and they're not doing it. They need to get the resources in place and a system up and working working to stop illegal border crossings, and deport the illegals. Next is to put in place the infrastructure necessary to efficiently process LEGAL immigration.

Cheryl - It really wasn't a question. I was looking to see if anyone disagreed that permitting illegals to obtain drivers licenses DID, in fact, make it easier for them to be able to vote. It would have.
Here's an encrypted page from the DMV in CA [dept. of motor vehicles] not sure if it will work... but it's an online form for anyone to use to register to vote in the state of CA. And IF a drivers license is in their possession, they can register quite easily. Notice they will have to LIE on the form...as to being illegal...and there is the threat of punishment...but who's to stop anyone from completing the form anyway?

Failure to vote in a statewide election, however, will cancel your Permanent absentee status (not your voter registration) and you will need to reapply for permanent status.

And with the Federal motor voter law, that was passed in 1994....it would be a breeze.

reamond - We definitely need massive immigration if we're going to shore up social security and divert our aging demographic curve.
We don't/won't *IF* some of the new Social Security proposals work out and can be agreed to. Imo, some great suggestions have been put out for dealing with this issue recently. [but that's another thread].
"Most inspections are done by questioning foreigners on the street and this approach is solely based on the color of their skin. There are illegal aliens from both English and non-English speaking nations but those from poorer countries are being singled out based on the color of their skin,'' said Jung Jin-woo, head of the Common Committee for Opposing the Crackdown on Migrant workers."

Finally Helen posts an article worth reading.... thanks Helen... too bad more people don't think like these proud AMERICANS and put a stop to the illegal immigration
I don't condone the torture part, just capture and turn them over to Border Patrol for deportation.

Where's Fenix??????
I want to ask her if she thinks these illegals were paying this much money so they would be able to buy car insurance? I think they realize that having a drivers license, in any state, makes life a LOT easier for them, in multiple ways.

Two Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles clerks who helped up to 1,000 people obtain fraudulent driver's licenses were sentenced to federal prison terms Friday for document fraud.
Consuelo Onate-Banzon, 46, the scheme's ringleader, was sentenced to three years and five months in prison and ordered to forfeit $200,000 in illegal earnings to the government.
Her accomplice, Rony Razon, 31, received two years and three months and was ordered to forfeit $100,000.
Both pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in September.
Onate-Banzon and Razon helped hundreds of people, mostly Hispanic immigrants, obtain licenses over a five-year period. They were arrested in July.
Their customers would pay $700 to $2,000 each for the licenses. Prosecutors said the two clerks employed five "runners" who recruited customers and would escort them directly to Onate-Banzon or Razon.

oh....and I agree, twelvepole. I don't blame the property owners for taking matters into their own hands with the boarder crossings.
If the government is going to ignore this HUGE problem, it's their property that's being destroyed and it's their property that's being taken [animals] and I don't blame them for defending what they've worked hard to obtain.

Linda - hard to say since theinsurance issue is not mentioned. The whole article is about two state employees, it has nothing to do with the peoplle who actually got the licenses and without information regarding those individuals and whether or not they obtained insurance I don't think there is any basis to comment on - or are you simply assuming that because they paid so much for the license they had to have been too broke to ever be able to obtain insurance? If so, you and I have two different schools of thought on this one.... Mine is that you have gone thru that much effort to get a drivers lisence, why blow it all out the window by not also obtaining insurance which would make you a legal driver in Virginia?
BTW - I don't blame those people for going the extra yard in that state... A few years ago my friend and I were pulled over after going thru the tunnel for no reason other than the fact that he was a latino. You should have seen the smile the Patrolman cracked when my friend pulled out his Mexican drivers license, you would have thought he had won the lottery. He went from politely asking for license and registration to rude and beligerant upon site of that license. Of course his joy was quickly squashed when he was also presented with his passport containing proper visas. I was not a proud American that day.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

There you are.
I said that tongue-in-cheek as most people realize the reason they want drivers licenses is to look legal....not so they can purchase insurance.
My husband was stopped when we were returning from Mexico too. He was wearing a heavy jacket and was sweating. Asked him why he had been running. [He hadn't been] They were suspicious of him and asked for proof of US citizenship. We understood, it's their job.

14 inches of snow???? WOW....that was some storm. Sounds beautiful...if one doesn't have to go out unless they want to.
We had very slight snow flurries here yesterday. But that was it.
I'm looking forward to getting snow. Want to share some?

When I lived in SD, the big thing was stealing the numbers off your license plate... happend to me twice outside the shipyards, reason I started to take the Trolley down there as much as I could get by with... at $8 each time and having to wait in line, was a real pain in the butt.
