I want to send some extras to a customer who happens to be an American soldier in Iraq. He sounds like his morale is low, so I wanted to put together a "care package" for him. Any idea what is not allowed? Any suggestions on what to include?
Thanks!

How do you know his morale is low?

You can send almost anything that is not pornographic or alcholic...

I send my nephew care packages once a month... He is just taking in stride and even helped rebuild a school... He is proud of that and says he is glad he went...

He left a message when he paid by PayPal saying his item similar to the one he purchased from me had "blown up" and his "morale was shot"... I just felt as though he could use some cheer from home, so I've prepared a "care package" of magazines and goodies for him. I wasn't sure what was not allowed, but I have no intentions of including porn or alcohol so that's not an issue! LOL!
I have no members of my family, that I know of, who are serving overseas, so I just went with the urge to do something special for this guy.

Sheathing, I am sure even if its only a temporary moment, I am sure it will brighten up this guy's day! Being over there longer than 6 months is enough to get anybody down.

Twelve, what do you care?

I've made numerous posts I'm from a military community so I know what I am saying.

What I am saying is that when you say things like "Being there..." you have no experience and are only guessing.

Just because you are against having troops there, is no reason to speak for them all...

Because you DON'T KNOW...

One could take the 12pole stance and send him an autographed copy of Mien Kampf.

But seriously;
What about some good news stories from home,
and perhaps some poems of love and hope and joy.

Twelve - whether you are for or against the war, is it really so hard to believe that one might get a little home sick after six months in a desert where few people speak your language and you and your buddies have a virtual target o n your back even in non combat situation? I don't think that it's a matter of patriotism or good soldiering, it's just human nature.

Why do you get so defensive when moral issues are brought up? The defense department is more accepting of the homesickness/depression issue than you are. They are trying to get members home for at least a few days to be with family and friends for a recharge and sending over a team to investigate the high suicide rate among military members.

I'm glad your nephew is happy but why deny that not all are and why question the motives of someone who obviously supports the tropps enought to perpetrate a random act of kindness and just came looking for some advice?

Shething - try a few newer release CDs, something they may not have access to yet, depending on the item they bought, maybe a couple related magazines, visine... just some ideas.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Some of the troops I am sure are homesick, that is part of the process.... however feeding that sickness is not healthy for the soldier who needs to be thinking about the job at hand.

I see nothing wrong with sending cds and stuff, however it is best to keep the comments positive and upbeat... anyone that has served knows that if you get the happy mails it is easier to keep your mind on what your doing.. not worrying about what people are doing "back home".

Anti-war protestors kill more soldiers than they want to admit... but hey keep on protesting the rebels like it.

There has also been recent concern about the number of suicides of our soldiers in Iraq. Between the suicides and the violent murders some have committed when they returned home, something is very wrong.

I think the best thing to send our soldiers is a new commander-in-chief this November.

You can send him a Humvee that is bomb prooof and better body amour. I think all the soldiers in Iraq are in need since they are dying at a rate of 1 or 2 a day from roadside bombs.

Send em more ammo, chap stick, handy wipes and M&M's don't melt as easily as other chocolates.

Send em copies of Austi & Sky's joint bio, "How to impress the sheep I sleep with"......

'We have dispatched Dr. David Kay...to search for the bio-warfare agents we believe hidden in Senator Kerry's forehead. If Senator Kerry has used botox as part of a wrinkle enrichment program, he is in violation of UN Resolution 752. Upon receiving Dr. Kay's report, the weapons of mass destruction that Senator Kerry so adamantly insists do not exist...may well be above his very nose.'" --Dick Cheney when asked whether John Kerry has had Botox treaments

shething; what a wonderful thing to do. I would call the U.S.O. I'm sure they could give you advice on what he would need most.

During my time in the service it was Toothpaste, Gum, Soap without chemicals and smell, plain Ass wipe and Rubbers.

Tweleve, dont tell me what I KNOW and what I dont know.

I KNOW what it is to be seperated from your spouse for more than six months. I know what the spouse feels when they get phone calls or emails and they cant do anything about the stresses at home.

Besides you dont have to be a brain surgeon to figure out that ANYBODY would miss their home, family, and the United States after 6 months. What you do propose? That its party time in Iraq and they are all having a great time?? Get real.

Thanks, everyone, for your help and suggestions. I never would have thought of chapstick, handy wipes, toothpaste, gum, etc. The things we take for granted!

Thanks for the website, kiara. It was very helpful.

I hope it will boost his morale. I can hardly even imagine how tough it must be to be an American soldier in harm's way. I have no interest in the politics of the situation, I just wanted to make a difference in one person's life.

Even the old Vets still talk about how homesick they got when they were overseas and how much the letters meant to them.

All year long I meet young people from all over the world who come to work in the resorts or who are exchange students or are away at University or are nannys for professionals and they experience terrible homesickness. They are in a safe environment so when I compare that to a soldier living in fear and uncertainty it must be terrible at times. I don't think we have to have "been there" to understand that.

Homesickness is a real "sickness". Years ago a young man came up to my counter with gifts he had chosen for his little brothers and sisters and he had been away from home for a couple of months. He burst into tears and put his hand to his heart and said in broken English, "Now I know why they call it "homesick", it is real sickness coming from my heart".

The government is now very concerned about the suicides and also about how the soldiers adapt when they come back home. Many are injured, laying in hospitals and they must also miss their families and wonder about their futures.

I'm getting a bit tired of a certain sailor boy strutting his stuff trying to be commander of the Vendio ship and asking others what they have done for their country and saying how we had to have served to know anything. Not true.

It's called the ignore button.. try it if you don't like it...

IF you jerk offs really cared about those brave men and women over there you'd keep your damned negative comments to yourself and send those people some support and good cheer.
They need to keep thir minds on the business at hand, not worrying about your pissing moaning about President Bush or whatever else your pathetic lives are complaining about.

Oh neurtor let me guess you were the military wife we all made fun of... LOL

Did I hit a sensitive nerve again?

Who said anyone was sending negative comments to the troops or pizzing and moaning about Bush? I don't see that.

That's your biggest fear, isn't it....... that some may find out that this may turn into another Vietnam or that the war was based on lies.

and your comments are just more proof of your ignorance of "being there".

Wrong in your eyes, perhaps.

Just for the record, I don't think it would be too wise to send anti-war messages to the soldiers along with gifts to cheer them up and I doubt that many people would do that.

But I'm sure they do hear things from other sources.

Now, run along and float a few more boats in the bathtub and have a fun day.

Yes they do have TV and radio and newspapers, but we here at home can help keep their morale up with good thoughts in letters and "happy" things...

Keep guessing, twelve. Only further demonstrates the lack of any intellectual capability you have to string congruent thought processes together. Just like your Man Bush. "hmmm...should we start a war based on GUESSING Iraq as WOMD's somewhere?? Hot dog! Yea!! Lets do that! Sending the troops in - yippie-ki-yay!
