You're too easy Cheryl! I was just going to call Helen a shriveled girdle wearing banana peel for her outburst.

Neroter 12: everyone should read the books on Edgar Cayce and how he could heal from a distance, all verified by medical doctors by the way.

I'm with the majority here. I believe in both conventional medical care as well as alternative care. I have been a Reiki practitioner for some time and have seen some amazing results.

I would never discourage anyone from using or consulting convention medicine. I have, however, had to caution some people from being too carried away with the alternative approach.

For me healing and dis-ease are personal, and the "cure" is only as good as the patient's willingness to accept it. Doesn't matter if you are giving them a pill or a thought form. If they mentally reject the possibility, then it is not going to work for them.

I also like to caution those that develop an anti-conventional medicine attitude. Herbs and vitamins are DRUGS! There is not much difference between the uninformed/uneducated taking a pill or brewing a tea. You can do as much, if not more, harm to your body by ingesting a natural substance as you can by OD'ing on a prescription medicine.

The best way to be healthy is to be informed and open to understanding your illness.

ET, you mentioned Edgar Cayce. I have been a student of his reading for years. There is an organization called the A.R.E. that has archived all of his readings and has an associated group of professional doctors doing research on the effectiveness of his recommended cures for the general public.

Itray

How interesting that you are a Reiki practitioner. Our reflexologist also does Reiki. My first experience with Reiki was outstanding. We had just hired this woman to perform Reiki treatments. I was to be her first client (the "tryer-outer", so to speak). She was able to tell me that I had just recently lost my brother. She was also able to give me his name and was able to let me know that he was not earth bound. She absolutely had no way of knowing about him at all. No one at work knew anything about him to be able to tell her. She was also able to tell me my spirit guide is a Seminole woman. However, she couldn't quite get the woman's name. Anyway, she asked me if I had a habit of attracting needy, troubled people and, of course, my answer was "yes". It seems she thinks my Crown Chakra shines like a beacon, which is why these people gather around me. Wonderul! It's just what I need. LOL!

yes, there is a chemical in certain plants which will prevent a tumor to grow its blood vessels which reach into the main blood system to absorb nutrients which enable the tumor to grow bigger.
without these blood vessels, the tumor either remain the same size or shrivel in size, and eventually may just disappear.
This chemical is found in soybeans.I have a friend who has what you call it,cystic fibrosis breasts?? and she patiently drinks soy milk every day for over a year and now she has no cysts .
the substance in modern medicine are often derived from nature,it is just purer and more potent so it is more effective, sometimes low dosage just does not work, sometimes it takes a long time to work or it is just not pure enough,if you take the substance in its natural form (fruit or plant)it contains other chemicals as well.
If it is preserved,it may have lost its potency .

Thanks Itray. Yes, I am familiar with A.R.E. and their research center in Virginia. I was introduced to the Edgar Cayce writings by a person sitting next to me on a plane years ago. He was an avid follower and was reading a book called "Edgar Cayce, the Sleeping Prophet" by Jess Stearn. This man was so interesting that I later bought the book and have read all that I can about him. What a unique and fascinating person.

For those of you that are curious about healing with the mind, nutrition and conventional medicine read anything you can of Dr. Carl Simonton, M.D. One of his books is "Getting Well Again". His cures of cancer with mental imaging are all verified by other doctors and his writings are recommended by other doctors.
Amazon.com has many of his books and others that talk of and recommend his findings.
Don't knock it, till you read it.

If anyone is interested in reading more about the subject, there is a good website to get you started:

National Center for Alternative and Complementary Medicine:

http://nccam.nih.gov/

Also, before anyone goes out and starts taking herbs, I would suggest consulting an herbalist. Just like there are certain medications that should not be mixed, there are certain herbs that should not be mixed either. Most of your health food stores should be able to help you. There are several great books out there as well.

This has been a great discussion and a welcome reprieve from the political threads! Thanks to everyone who has participated.

After the experience that I watched my friend endure, I feel obligated to introduce a little dissonance in this discussion. I'll just post these points to consider.

As etexbill pointed out, in most cases, a doctor should be consulted first. Who would have imagined that a a knee problem in a 55 year old man could be cancer?

.................

Some people define alternative medicine in a derogatory way. Richard Dawkins, professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford, defines alternative medicine as "that set of practices that cannot be tested, refuse to be tested or consistently fail tests" (See Diamond 2003). Some feel that the very term "alternative medicine" is misleading, on the belief that these treatments are not a true alternative to regulated conventional medicine.

There is no strict definition as to what constitutes "conventional" or "mainstream" medicines, as opposed to the tag "alternative." One possible definition is that "conventional medicine" is that which is recognized as valid medicine by the majority of the scientific and the health community in the Western world, which aims for standards of proof of efficiency based on double-blind studies and explanations as to the workings of drugs based on biology and biochemistry. Another is that "conventional medicine" is what is licensed as valid medicine by the local governing authority.

There is a concern that patients may delay seeking conventional medicine that could be more effective, whilst they undergo alternative therapies, potentially resulting in harm.

Lack of proper testing

Many forms of alternative medicine are rejected by conventional medicine because the efficacy of the treatments has not been shown through double-blind randomized controlled trials. Where alternative methods provide temporary symptomatic relief, this has been explained by Barry L. Beyerstein, Ph.D as being due to the placebo effect, or to natural healing, or to the cyclic nature of some illnesses.

Poor diagnosis

One of the most important concerns of mainstream medical doctors is that alternative medical practitioners sometimes fail to correctly diagnose illnesses, and therefore do not provide safe therapies every time. William T. Jarvis, Ph.D contends in the web article "How Quackery Harms Cancer Patients" that "Dubious therapies can cause death, serious injury, unnecessary suffering, and disfigurement" and gives an example of how an unlicenced naturopath caused a severe disfigurement of a patient.
How Quackery Harms Cancer Patients

Criticisms differ for the various branches
Due to the wide range of types of alternative medicine few criticisms apply across the board. Criticisms directed at specific branches of alternative medicine range from the fairly minor (conventional treament is believed to be more effective in a particular area) to potential violations of the laws of physics (for example, in homeopathy).

Regulation

Practices terming themselves "alternative medicine" have caused deaths indirectly when patients have used alternatives in attempts to treat such conditions as appendicitis and failed. Proponents of alternative medicine say that people should be free to choose whatever method of healthcare they want. Critics agree that people should be free to choose, but when choosing people must be certain that whatever method they choose will be safe and effective. People who choose alternative medicine think they are choosing a safe, effective medicine, while they may only be getting quack remedies. This can be a particular issue in the treatment of children and animals.

Testing and studies

The scientific community argues that many studies carried out by alternative medicine promoters are flawed, as they often use testimonials and hearsay as evidence, leaving the results open to observer bias. They argue that the only way to counter observer bias is to run a double blind experiment, where neither the patient nor the practitioner knows whether the real treatment is being given or if a placebo has been administered. This research should then be reviewed by peers to determine the validity of the research methodology.

Testimonials are especially useless in this procedure, because by chance alone some people will get cured and will be able to testify that the method really helped them. Furthermore, if the majority of people using a method do not notice any benefit or even get worse, there will still be a minority that can testify that the method really helped for them. Sounds like a lot of you are very aware of your health and how to take care of yourself.

Now, type in ASPARTAME in your browser and read...............

You will read how this poison is in just about every sugar-free food item.
How the FDA did not want to pass it but Reagan pushed it through for the food industry to make billions with no regard for your health whatsoever.
More importantly, read the symptoms and how it exacerbates and mimics other diseases.
