Turkey at Thanksgiving, because my daughter makes the meal. Ham at Christmas and I do that. She has the tougher job but we all help out. It's not Thanksgiving without family. I remember long long ago when I was single and living in Evanston Illinois, family in Northern Minnesota, I had Thanksgiving dinner, turkey and the works, for all the x-ray techs (12) that couldn't make it home for Thanksgiving. We had one heck of a crowd, lots of food and it was fun getting together away from the Hospital.

This is the nicest time of the year but it brings back lots of memories. Some good some not so good.

Turkey - along with sage & mushroom stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, candied yams, 5 cup salad [ambrosia], homemade cranberry jelly, rolls, and my MIL's green/lime jello salad made with pineapple, mayonnaise, walnuts, cottage cheese and of course for dessert - pumpkin pies with real whipped cream.

A family time where friends who are alone are invited to join us....and we go around the table sharing what we each are most thankful for that/this year.

Maggie
Have you tried the turkey Spam, it's great for sandwiches.

In my family we have actually fasted for Thanksgiving a few times rather than feasted.

Why on one day a year, with the multitude of the bounty that the Earth has to offer do we have to take a little more, why do we have to show thanks for whatever we are each thankful for by consuming a little more than we normally do on any other day?? Is it not better to just be thankful for whatever each has to be thankful for, eat a normal meal, or not at all and be done with it??

Fried turkey spam is good! I don't eat a lot of fried food, but once in a while, it is a treat..not treat..spam.. LOL

I agree, about the food thing Yellow, but when people gather..food is used in celebration..unfortunately there seems to be a little to much celebration going on here in the US.. our obesity rate is off the charts..

I hear people talk about how they pigged out like big dogs for Thanksgiving and also after Christmas and other holidays as well and I allways think about what I posted in my previous post.

Anymore, Thanksgiving like all holidays have been blown out of proportion and the massive consumerism has kicked in big time. The term "conservation" is thrown out the door for the holidays and it's consume, consume, consume.

I don't mean to try to put a damper on all of you're upcoming celebrations but to me it just seems like for the most part it's all unneccesary to have to make such big deals about whatever holiday is being celebrated just because everyone else does it.

Yes, I know, consumerism is what drives our economy but it just seems like a viscious(sp) cycle. I used to drive a garbage truck a number of years ago and when I went to the landfill after holidays, I would see all the wrapping papers and discarded, used once packages and it was sickening to see the massive waste. I should have taken pictures, especially after Christmas. The landfill was decorated with ribbons and bows of all different colors and all colors of wrapping papers sticking out of the trash everywhere.

It is a sight to see and I strongly suggest to all, to go to their local landfill after Chrismas and see for yourselves, take you're camera with you.

Have a happy Thanksgiving.

Now when I was a child
My family was so poor
They didn't have the finer things in life to eat
So we had a plan
In a big blue can
The government substitute for meat

[repeat chorus]

To get me to eat it at dinner
They said I'd grow up like Bruce Jenner
He was a winner that never knew defeat
And when he got hungry
When he got hungry
He cracked open that special treat
It was

Don't you know it's my best friend
S-P-A-M
Again and again and again

S-P-A-M
Don't you know it's my best friend

Again and again and again and again

So go and forget your O-S-C-A-R
There's one meat by-product that's best by far
It's

Subject: Why Buy the cow?!?!?

Why Buy the cow?!?!?

For all those men who say,

"Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free."

Here's an update for you.....

Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage.

Why?

Because women realize its not worth buying an entire Pig,....

Just to get a little sausage.

crow & yellow-

I understand where you're coming from as far as consumerism taking over the holidays. Mark knows I love him anyway, even though the cheap bastard won't cover me with diamonds or get me a new car for Christmas...lol!...I'm kidding about the cheap bastard part!

For OUR families, we are very large and, other than the family reunion in August, Mother's Day and Father's Day, we only see everyone together for Thanksgiving and Christmas. By the time we all "bring a dish to pass" for 40+, the tables look like "Old Country Buffet". I'm sure it's the same for most families.

The only thing I find fault with at Christmas is when people will not pay the bills they owe and blow every penny they can get their hands on and even worse money that they don't have(credit cards) on Christmas. My stupid Sister-In-Law is the worlds worst for that. She says she has to buy Christmas and then runs to organizations to get free hand outs. She will let her light bill go until they cut it off,run to a church and beg for the money to get it turned back on. She is only buying a free trip to Hell for her actions. Rant over.

My family gets together at the drop of a hat.....no insults intended.....we like each other all year long and don't need the most hectic times of the year to force us together.
I quit celebrating Christmas 30 years ago and have had quiet, peaceful, restful mid- winter vacations every year since.

My biggest pet peeve is women who complain about how much work it is, how they hate it, how tired and stressed out they are, how they can hardly wait until it's over and then DO IT ALL AGAIN THE NEXT YEAR!

Either enjoy it, or don't do it. It's not a law and your family will survive the shock of not using you as a slave.
