Election day is over and the feared mass killings didn't occur. [Thank you God]

Brave Iraqi's showed how important it is to them to have the right to vote - they put their lives on the line to do so. Those purple fingers were proof they want to form their own government.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Iraqis danced and clapped with joy Sunday as they voted in their country's first free election in a half-century, defying insurgents who launched eight suicide bombings and mortar strikes at polling stations. The attacks killed at least 36 people.
Polling stations officially closed as of 5 p.m., but the elecion commission said anyone still in line would be allowed to vote.

An Iraqi election official said that 72 percent of eligible Iraqi voters had turned out so far nationwide. The official, Adel al-Lami of the Independent Electoral Commission, offered no overall figures of the actual number of Iraqis who have voted to back up the claim.

After a slow start, men and women in flowing black abayas - often holding babies - formed long lines, although there were pockets of Iraq where the streets and polling stations were deserted. Iraqis prohibited from using private cars walked streets crowded in a few places nearly shoulder-to-shoulder with voters, hitched rides on military buses and trucks, and some even carried the elderly in their arms.

"This is democracy," said Karfia Abbasi, holding up a thumb stained with purple ink to prove she had voted.

Officials said turnout appeared higher than expected, although it was too soon to tell for sure.

Now what?

As I saw this on the news, it was hard to comprehend if they understand or how they feel to have found a new fresh voice in voting???
weird.

Listen to her/him....just can't stop telling others how THEY feel...or what they think. But rather continues to go on and on about those who were murdered, putting their lives on the line for something as terrible as using their first right to vote freely.

If we're going to be asssuming things about one another....then here's my assumption about cf.

Maybe she's a supporter of saddam who believes that those who put their lives on the line to vote...shouldn't have been allowed to. That 26 million people don't deserve to freely vote.

Who knows what that mixed up mind thinks....

I bet she believes in abortion and partial birth abortion. How many babies are killed because women want to play around and heaven forbid they get pregnant. What about the morning after pill. I bet she is in favor of that also.

Far more babies killed than voters in Iraq.

Here's no asumption, here's the truth .
linduh was all for torturing these people a few months ago.

It's hilarious that she is so happy about the "good news" in Iraq when she really doesn't care at all for those people or people of any other country.

Oh, and by the way, linduh, YOU have made a habit of telling people how they feel....remember when Profe told you off and you told HIM how he felt...happened several other times , too. But, so typical of your fat mouth having two sides.

I don't know about Linda, but makes me happy...

So crowfart, why do you avoid to answer the questions put to you?

Why are you so afraid of strong men and life in general?

So what if Linda doesn't care if those people were tortured?

I don't really give a rats ass either... I feel that any insurgent captured is executed...

For someone that claims to be a pacifist... you sure like to provoke people... have you ever had a face to face confrontation? Or do you prefer hiding?

It was a good election for one that had not been held in 50+ years... be happy for the Iraqi people or is that beyond you?

I'll take it on faith that most here read my words and don't see me as being happy about anybody dying...being killed. That's only your sick minds way of take it.

The profe was right to call me on the way I worded that post...what I was saying wasn't clear at all. And since he's normally not like that I made the assumption that he had had a hard day...like we all do now and then. And my post had pushed him over his patience quota.

Don't even try to put yourself in the say catagory as the profe....you go off on each and every post you make. You're NOT in the same 'character' position as our profe is, imo.

crowfar, she was, imo 'all for' defeating the insurgants who didnt want to see this day coming.

It is wonderful to see these people so empowered for themselves! (question the extent to which that will last, corruption, etc.)- but its a real move forward for them! I think its great!

I doubt that this election, in which only 40% registered and of those registered only 60% voted, will make a difference . The level of security that made this election possible will not be maintained and next week the war will resume. There will be no peace because democracy cannot exist under a criminal occupation.

YAY!

How much ya wanna bet we don't hear much from the mainstream press other than the absolute minimum?

Or else all we're going to hear about is how corrupt and unfair the voting was.

This is possibly the greatest and most significant day in the past 50 years of Iraqi history. And everyone on Earth except for our President and his supporters were HOPING for a big failure.

YAY!

ByGollyMolly, Helenjw says she doubts this will make a difference......

How can you say that? Have you ever raised children - witnessed exuberance of growth from one stage to another? Experienced a light of hope somewhere???????
It makes a broad and sweeping difference to their psychological and mental ideas of where they are going and being responsible for themselves. If not right now, but in the future.

Shall we hoist another "Mission Accomplished" banner?

I think maybe we should do JUST that helen. Good idea there.

It's a successful and historical day ..the beginning of the long road ahead to democracy.
I think we SHOULD honor this FIRST step.

I think this is the first time in quite a while I've agreed with you.

I am very happy for the Iraqis bravery in taking their first step toward democracy...

..but before "hoisting the mission accomplished banners"...let us not forget that this was not the reason or mission our government had in mind when they began the war with Iraq. I believe we were told our mission was to rid SH and the Iraqi's of weapons of mass destruction. When did it switch to bringing democracy to Iraq? Was it when no weapons of Mass destruction were found?

maggie, ya ever hear of countries doing things>>> in their>>> own>>> best >>> interest of their >>>country? I dont pretend to have a clue what them in the white house plan and do...but if it looks good, I might think about buying it. And this looks good for them, the Iraquis (and probably>>>> us in the future)

I disagree with that statement, maggie. It WAS one of several reasons given, at the time, for going in.

And to lift the "Mission Accomplished" flag because it was successful is to honor that it was successful....this first step of many that are going to be required to change the 'status-quo' of 35 years [saddam in power]

Good point, Maggie! I was just being facetious with my question about another Mission Accomplished banner. The reasons for this war evolved as one after another failed to justify our preemptive invasion and criminal occupation.

goodgolly mzzzrss mollies:

When are you going to get past the fact that whether it was in error, or a based on a false premise, the representatives of our United States government voted to go in. They did and they're there. It wouldnt be the first time any country has ever positioned itself while doing something that can be a great great benefit for these people!

I knew you were being facetious, Helen..LOL

Yes, Df.. of course..only history will tell..

.. but on the face of things.. our mission was to protect our country from an imminent threat of WMD... that is what we the people were told.. and most agreed to send our sons and daughters to fight for our protection..
It is difficult to justify the loss of lives of our citizens to bring democracy to Iraq.
But as you said DF.. who knows what the real mission is..??

I knew you were being facetious, Helen....so did I...but it's still a great idea.

After all the U.S. POLICY, set during the clinton administration, was the Liberation Act of Iraq.

So our policy was established WAY before this President even came into office.

You just don't like the way he did it. But he WAS re-elected....even though.

Yes, that's correct, Linda.. many of us are not happy with the way it was done... and have voiced our opinion to say as much.. but that's all good.. as it is part of this great democracy of ours..and soon to be that of the Iraqis.. the right to free speech and to disagree and to vote. Many feel that we were duped into going to war, some like DBF.. don't mind what name you put on it as long as the means justify the end, on the way to bettering oneself, helping the less fortunate along the way.. is a plus.. okay, now, I'm rambling...

I don't know who the evil taskmaster is either DBf.. we are merely pawns in this chess game of life.. Maggie

I understand your stated 'rights' and agree with them.

But when those who opposed this war try and make it sound like what's being accomplished, what our soldiers are giving up their lives for...like it's nothing important....when it's, in fact historical....or they choose to KEEP whining about our going in....and for reasons the democrats, like kerry, ALSO believed in and supported and made our National policy under a democratic administration ...AND it's been over a year and a half and they're still whining about our going in....that's what's being commented on. IT'S OVER...DONE...disagreeing with the way it was done is not going to change the fact it was done. But yes, you're free to keep whining about it....just like I'm free to defend our COUNTRY'S actions and point out this President wasn't the only one who believed there were womd in Iraq....another fact the anti-war people don't want to admit.

Now THAT'S rambling.

It sounds like you're the whiner, linda. Over and over you try to justify this war but you can't. The truth is that this war was rushed through congress while the American people were duped into believing that weapons of mass destruction were pointed in our direction - ready to fire in forty five minutes. It's not "over or done" as long as we have troops there. You seem to have the misconception that the majority is always right. As you must be able to see, the war in Iraq is a colossal failure. Iraq is now on the verge of Civil War.

LOL -helen Once again just can't keep to your 'word' [promise ] and not respond to me. Does your WORD mean NOTHING to you woman?

It's not me whining...and I don't need to defend anything. I choose to correct you ultra-liberals who mistate the actual facts.

And if enough American's had agreed with your anti-war stand...kerry would have been elected. He wasn't.

I'm just responding to those who ARE whining about what's in the past...as it was our Nation's policy to remove saddam....because he was a threat to our country and the world and wouldn't cooperate for 13 years.

But I do notice...you share no happiness that this was successful accomplished. That few American soldiers lost their lives. That you approve of the Iraqi's freedom to vote. Almost like you could have been rooting for our failure...maybe more lives being lost...anything to discredit this re-elected President, when the dems supported it too. shameful.

But then I realize that the only thing you like to share is how many troops have been murdered. I've never seen you ONCE say anything positive about our troops, themselves.

Helen I am curious, so you would prefer that no elections of been held?

It seems you can't get past the fact that the US was given faulty intelligence and acted upon it... oh well, get over it and move on...

These elections were the first in 50+ years... but demcracy is not big on your list of must haves...
