OK, you've seen the commercials eBay's using to attract potential buyers.

Now it's your turn!

If seller's were to write a commercial about their selling experience on eBay . . . how would it go?

Young boy in `940's plays with metal toy airplane on floor of living room with Mom in kitchen thru doorway. All done in Sepia tones. Screen flashes auction for item with good pic, and
cursor goes to place a bid. Final full color shot shows obviously the same man as the little boy with the toy on the window ledge behind him in a nice office looking out over a big city. There are other modern models of aircraft and space craft and a computer CAD file on his big monitor of a space plane. He picks it up and has an idiotic big grin.
Flash out says - "haven't seen something in awhile? -- eBay.com"

Family scene shows everybody around a huge table all happy and laughing chowing down like crazy with a big Turkey. Patriarch at head -Matriarch at the right hand. Younger man passes gravy boat and slips and it is heard crashing on the floor. Laughter ends everyone looks uncomfortable and Matriarch horrified.
Later scene shows search page with china name and gravy boat being clicked
Final scene shows Grandma pulling gravy boat out of bubble wrap with young man beside her.
Fade out says - " Need to find something? - eBay.com"

That was incredible gravid! It stirred overwhelming emotion in me. Same series: Little girl sitting on her daddy's lap listening to him read to her (of course sepia tone). Flash to eBay screen (full color)with cursor - picture of an old copy of "The Emerald City of Oz". Next screen - Gray haired woman reading the same book to her granddaughter in her lap. "Haven't seen something in a long time?" - eBay.
Happy New Year.

Man in parking lot comes out to classic car
with a couple young kids just drooling over it on scooters. They give him thumbs up, and he gives wave and thanks. He throws briefcase in trunk and finds taillight is broken. Flash ahead to him pulling in auto parts store, and jump ahead, the man at counter is shaking his head NO.
Search page on eBay shows year of car and lens. End shows him pulling lens out of priority box. Flash out says "Something hard to find? - eBay.com"

Nice swoose - we could do these like crazy on a low budget and just pound it into the public that they can find anything. Maybe they look at something that straight forward and say anyone could do that.

Gravid - AWESOME ADS!!!! Think if any of those YoYos at ebaY could pull their heads out far enough to read this, they would be falling over themselves to get these on the little screen! Ooops - forgot - they don't advertise Cars, Great Collections, Disney, Real Estate etc, but focus on Person to Person type items - ahh well it was a nice dream for a moment or two. -Rosalinda

Fast forward to adult in office. See's Ebay ad on TV and runs to computer to find similar toy.

Sees "Site Temporarily Unavailable" reflected in his glasses from the computer screen.

Voice Over at end of commercial, "You can never go home again . . . Just try it on eBay.com"

Oh no you don't. I have given Ebay quite enough ideas over the past 4 years. From now on, they pay me for ideas.

Young boy logs on to eBay to look for the latest trading card.

Boy ages into a man before your eyes as he's waiting for eBay site to come back up from a "temp unavailable" condition.

Voiceover . . . "some things are just worth waiting for, ebay.com"

Gravid -- I'm in tears from your suggestion. That happened to us this Christmas. My grandfather used to read "The High Cocalorum of Kafoozalum" to my mother, and she has talked about it since I was little how she would like a copy. I asked on the round table if anyone had ever heard of it, and I was directed to Bibliofind, which I'd never heard of. My mother just bawled when she she opened the package, and now I'm looking for another for my aunt. That is one of the best commercial ideas I've ever heard. You need to be into marketing.

Picture of woman in room playing with two small daughters surrounded by Kissy Dolls in both sizes, with pony tails and without, Kissy Paper Dolls, and Kissy Coloring Books.

Never grew up? Come home to play at eBay!

OOPS - that's not a commercial - that's me!

lol....

Now you know where my PayPal money goes .... lol!

Scene takes place in a dingy boiler room lined with banks of computers, all old and out of working order. Grimey sign on door Proclaims "HOT BACK UP: NO ADMITTANCE EXCEPT AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL". Man in work overalls enters carrying a black bag, plastic, actually something like a garbage bag. Man empties bag into hopper, actully a dumpster, with tinkle of beer bottles. Takes out a stogie and lights it. Has 5 day old beard.
Voice-over by Meg: "At Ebay You can rest assured that we have the best possible equipment and a hot back-up in the highly unlikely case that our regular system should go down. We really care about our sellers and bidders on Ebay..."

Picture a 7 year old girl, completely absorbed in a great mystery novel. Her mother calls her to dinner at least five times, none of which registers. Finally her mother comes to get her. Cut to the next scene, where the girl is holding a flashlight and reading in bed, even though she's been told repeatedly to go to sleep.

Jump ahead a couple of years. The girl has since outgrown those particular books, but wants to keep them, so she carefully boxes them up and gets her father to put them in the storage shed.

Jump ahead several years. The girl is now grown, and goes into the storage shed ... and finds that her beloved books are gone ... thrown away years ago since they were just taking up space.

Now picture me, joyously buying all my wonderful children's books back off eBay!

The commercial should be very simple:

The words "What can you buy on Ebay?" appear on the screen for a few seconds.

For the next 15 to 20 seconds a rapid barrage of full-screen pictures of everything from baseball cards to cars to comic books to furniture to full-sized stuffed elk should flash. There should be tons of images that should flash by very quickly.

Finally, the words "www.Ebay.com".

Tight shot of the back of a person's head and we're looking over his/her shoulder at an eBay auction item page on a computer monitor. This person just clicked on the submit bid button and the page changes to "congratulations you are the high bidder!" This person say's YES!!! The camera pulls slowly back to show more and more of the room we're in. There are items of all sorts piled everywhere. Clothes, toys, books, lamps, games, empty priority mail boxes and bubble wrap. Huge piles with barely enough room to move. Then words appear on the screen:

"How many times has this happened to you"?

"eBay.com"

A 13 year old kid rides his unicycle to the store and goes inside. A thief comes by and steals the unicycle. The kid comes out and is devastated.

The next scene is a 43 year old guy getting a box from the UPS man. He opens it up and it is the same model brand and style he had as a kid. He gets on and he can still ride one.

Words flash... See if you can still do it. www.ebay.com

True story....Mine.

OK, since we have a sepia tone theme here. Picture a young boy placing a baseball card in his bicycle spokes. Then cuts to man in office looking at "famous player" card. Then holding protected card and smiling. Add one of them lost yesteryear quotes and we have a commercial.

Love the ideas posted above!....How about a slightly different angle:

Scene: woman's bedroom, littered with clothing everywhere...woman tryin' on "yet another" outfit, which is way too big....Enter friend, "wow, you really have lost a lot of weight, don't you feel wonderful?"....Response from 1st woman "Sure, but now I really have nothing to wear!"......Closing screen "eBay.com, we can dress you!"
OR
Small baby/child dressed in clothing VERY obviously too small (eg. sleeves at the elbow, pant cuffs at mid-calf, dress WAY too short (lacy underwear underneath)...Voice over "they outgrow everything so quickly".....Closing screen "eBay.com"
OR
Family in new house beautifully decorated, kids playing games/video games, teen in room filled with electronic music equip, walls filled with posters & pix....Knock at the door, in comes a couple with a house warming gift....Gets the grand tour, in each room the guests inquire "where did you find that?"...Answer eBay.com over & over & over & over again.....Closing: guest walking away from the house, woman comments, "Honey, I've been thinking of redecorating".....Man responds "I know, eBay.com"

There is a record from my childhood I loved and got lost over the years (I've since found on ebay). Picture this: one of the songs is "Don't get negative-itis" (double meaning???) And child singing to it in 70s dress, etc. Then 25 years later grown woman singing to it after opening a package.

Or. . . how about something like a weird looking person inviting someone to a very unique occasion such as Uncle Louis' girlfriends son's first appearance on a game show. "Can't find the perfect gift? Try ebay.com" And show someone with some odd gift!

Gravid, best ideas you've ever had!

How about using scenes from old movies, commercials, and TV shows. Freeze frame and zoom in on a widget. Voice over says, "Ever wish you had one of those?......Find it on eBay".

Bring home the memories:

I have found several of my old toys over the years. My favorite 2 were the Johnny Express Tractor Trailer (my dad ran over it in the drive the day after Christmas) and Johnny Western Rifle (still had the shells and the feather with it) paid out the nose for the rifle but was worth it.

Sorry for getting out of subject.

Good night.

thegrendel - What is nice about that
montage idea is that you could change them or run several and people would stop and actually look to see if it was one they had seen yet.

A lot of these suggestions are just excellent! I know they are exactly the sort of thing that would draw me to eBay (if I wasn't there already) - I find gravid's ideas much more appealing that the ads that are actually running, because they strike the right chord.

Seems so many of the dot.com ads use a style that is highly entertaining yet don't stick in your brain. The classic example is pets.com's sock puppet - I enjoyed the ads but never visited the site. Now they are out of business. And that black rocket - what's with that? I'm concerned the eBay ads run along these same lines. Hope they read this thread.
