Hwahwa,

Yes, he's the one that wrote about the color blind population. He's written about all sorts of things; some people say that he's the poet of neurology.

Yes, those were cases of congenital color blindness.

He certainly made neurology interesting for many people who otherwise might consider the subject beyond their comprehension. He was a clinical neurology professor who loved to write.

They made a movie about those who suffered from a neuro degenerative disease ?some kind of Japanese inflammation of the brain, and by giving them L-dopa,they came back alive and went dancing, bowling and then it quitted working.
I think Robert Dinero played a part in it?

"Japanese inflammation of the brain"

Is that what makes them pay thru the nose to eat deadly poisonous fish, raw? Or pay hundreds of dollars a pound for American elk antlers? Buying a new bone....Perhaps it's what's behind the invention of those fake crab legs and shrimp you see in the grocery store. "Surimi" indeed. Fake is fake.
Who am I to talk...we cherish Huitlacoche, a fungus that grows on corn, and call it "American Truffles"....

I think almost any drug would quit working after bowling by the way. I'm just saying......

Maybe the movie that hwahwa describes is "Awakenings", based on Oliver Sack's book, Awakenings, starring Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro. the film received three Academy nominations in 1990.

But then it could be "One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest.

Helen, you beat me to the punch. I'm sure he's referring to Awakenings, which describes the use of L-Dopa in patients who had fallen ill during the 1915-1926 epidemic of encephalitis lethargica.

yes,The Awakening is the name of the movie and Robert DeNiro played one of the patients and it is a form of encephalitis.
L-Dopa is also given to Parkinson patients and eventually it loses its effect as well.

Interesting videos...The Science Network

A summer's worth of watching, thanks Helen! I liked Sam Harris' comment:
"A majority of the earth's people believe the unbelievable."

And isn't it wondrous to behold that the majority includes a few scientists who still cling to such false belief systems.

Happy to know that you found the site interesting too, Profe!
