Reading Preacher4u tribute thread for his beloved cat, made me think about all the different personalities that our pets have. Is it any wonder that we think of them as family members?

We came home to a wild scene this evening involving all our indoor pets. Seems that the new kitten Spaz got into the hamster cage again (I thought I had fixed it so she couldn't do that anymore)

I walked in and found our little bit pup, Abbey in the living room hovering over the hamster. Spaz kept trying to come close but Abbey would bark her away. I tried to grab it (don't know what I could have been thinking to grab a "rodent" but Abbey went ballistic on me and wouldn't let me near it.

My husband and son came in and tried to help - Abbey just kept getting madder. Finally, she snatched it up in her mouth - raced for her kennel and threw it in - then turned around barking like a big dog. We picked up the kennel and my son took it into his room to put the hamster back in her cage... all the while Abbey nipping at his feet. In the meanwhile, our fat little pudgey dog Pheobe was barking her head off at Spaz who had climbed up on the piano - her retreat when things get rough. Our mammacat, just lay back on the rocker and watched without budging - she's seen this kind of chaos here before and is no longer impressed.

Btw, the hamster's name is Lucky - at least she was this time.

How about it? Anymore pet stories out there?

Mybid,
I don't think anyone can top what you wrote. I am ROTFL.

I think Abbey found a baby!

Come to think of it we have had a wild turkey (George Jr) who was a menace to anything that entered the yard. He even chased cars. When he saw his reflection in anything he would preen, threaten and attack. Kind of embarrassing when it wasn't one of our possessions. I remember one time I was feeding the horses and George decided to attack. All I had was a bucket. He jumped on my back when I climbed into the place where we kept the hay. I was ready when I climbed back out and he came toward me I whopped him on the head with the bucket. He just stood there with his head stuck straight out frozen. I waited for him to keel over thinking "Oh my gosh, I've killed my husband"s turkey." I went to the house depressed over his impending death but about a half hour later he was wanderin around his Kindom overseeing everything. Still had to carry a stick out the door everytime we went out until he died of natural causes. I'll never forget him chasing cars, though. It was hilarious.

Years ago a cousin of mine had a St. Bernard named Kringle. One day when she had Kringle out in the front yard, the 3 year-old who lived next door came over, clutching his new hamster. My cousin said before she knew what was happening the little boy stretched his hand out & said "Look at my hamster, Kringle!" She likened it to a vacuum cleaner. One second the hamster was in the kid's hand, the next second it wasn't. She trying reaching her hand deep into Kringle's mouth, but it was too late. The hamster was *gone*--Kringle had inhaled the hamster without even chewing! The little boy never did forgive her or Kringle.

Hi Calamity I think your turkey beat out my hamster story by a long shot! ROTFLMAO

I'm picturing you standing there saying, "Oh my gosh, I've killed my husband"s turkey."

Bunnicula I think if our Spaz were a little bigger and the hamster a little smaller - we'd have had the same story here. She's managed to get into the cage several times now - we've started calling her hamster breath.

I guess I'll have to break down and buy a different cage tomorrow.

I don't think so Mybid. I can just see all of you running around trying to get the hamster. The thought of it just make me laugh so hard that I think it would be wise to visit the ladies room.

Oh goody! A fun thread about pets (sorry..family members). I had a rat...yes, a real rat...long tail and all. His name was Snoopy. He got lonely. Dumb me decided he needed a female friend. So, here came Aviance (named after perfume). Snoop and Aviance loved each other. They had a family. Of 13. My dog was wandering around the house drooling one day. I looked in his mouth, and he was dragging around one of the babies that fell out of the nest, like an alligator does its young! Snoopy only lived 3 & 1/2 years....so no more rats. They dont live long enough, and I get too attached to my "friends". Aviance went to a new home, and her brood with her.

ChooChoo (should be chewchew) is a lab. He talks. I have to spell eveything with him, because he knows every word. EVERY word. So hubby and I talk about stuff in spelling it out. Otherwise, he goes ballistic if we want to check the mail, or [/b]fix supper[/b] or any other thing that will catch his ear.

Fatso is my 18 year old cat. He does nothing but sharpen his claws for soft dog noses that get too close. He has no teeth. He has only one eye. He weighs about 20 lbs.

Oh...stories I can tell. But it would take too long

Calamity49: your post reminded me of my own turkey experience. Years back there used to be a place near here called The Wild Animal Training Center. I volunteered there--it was a place that rehabilitated all kinds of injured wild animals & birds, as well as being the home of both retired & active movie animals. One of the "inmates" was an enormous, ancient turkey that used to appear on The Beverly Hillbillies and which had the run of the place. This thing was *huge.* One day when it gobbled at at me, I "gobbled" back. It gobbled again. So did I. After a few more gobbles, this turkey began displaying its tail feather & the it wattle puffed up & became a darker red. It strutted toward me & I became very aware that had been "aroused" by my gobbles! For the rest of the day, as I went about my chores, he strutted after me doing his best to entice me Tourists taking tours about the place were vastly amused. Sadly, a year or so later my feathered swain suffered a stroke and was put to sleep.

That place was so much fun to work at! Best volunteering I have ever done. Local wildlife, exotic species, it had everything. Interesting things happened there...

edited to put a "y" in its proper place!

The intruder gets in. Bad mistake. One of my husband's Borzoi gets a bite of the pants, and does not let go. Screaming intruder, now without pants, runs out. Description to the police- look for the guy running down the street with no pants. They were ROTFLTAO, and they did catch him. This dog also used to lay by his water dish ouside, and catch squirrels

Surely with my brood of 6 cats and one dog I can come up with at least one...

Ok, how about the one where hubby and I go out into the backyard to look at something and left the dog in the house. He was jumping at the door excitedly because he wanted to come out too. Went to go back in the house and the deadbolt is locked. Hubby and I both look at each other wondering why the other would lock the door? Then it dawns on us both that the dog locked it! It was pretty funny to watch hubby climb over the fence (also locked) to go around to the front door (unlocked, go figure).

It's also pretty funny to watch a bitty little 6 week old kittens give said 50lb. dog a run for his money...

Bunnicula Except for the volunteer part, I suspect the AW Moderators feel the same way about their jobs.

About 4 weeks ago we adopted a pet from the animal shelter. She was scheduled for destruction so we literally "saved" her. Wanted a little puppy but we took the chance on this dog and we couldn't be happier! In just 4 weeks she has become part of our family and we can't imagine what life was like B.D., Before Dog.

She's probably 6 or 7 months old, looks sort of like a small German Shepherd, and weighs 35 pounds. She has the sweetest little face with the biggest ears you ever saw! Everyone comments on the ears. They are definitely too big for her face and she will never "grow into" them.

Had her housebroken in one week. She's very smart and obedient; really wants to please. She can Sit, Stay, Give Paw, Speak, and Rollover. In fact, whenever she sees me get the bag of treats out, before I even say anything, she sits, raises her paw, then lies down and rolls over, all in a row, in anticipation of the treat. It's hysterical.

My son named her Dobby, after the little elf in the Harry Potter book.

Editing to try and add a pic. Hope it works.

Busybiddy What a lucky pup you have! Our Abbey is partial to a treat called Pupcorn. She does the same antics when she sees the box come out. I told my husband that I think we could teach her to speak french - just for a pupcorn. LOL

busybiddy, what a cutie! Gunther (my dog in the picture above) had ears too big too, but he did finally grow into them. But I think she's cute just the way she is. I think it's great that you saved such a neat pup. It always amazes me how many good ones get put down

We saved our 2nd cat from a doomed fate too. He was on his 9th day at the shelter when we adopted him. He's the most laid back king on the roost I have ever seen. His name is Buddy, Jabba the Cat in fun (well he does weigh 20lbs. +)...

What funny stories! Mybiddness, our puppy's name is Lucky too!
I'll have to take some new pix of the gang: Lucky is 5 months old, 1/2 rottweiler, 1/2 golden retriever, 100% spastic love of life; Karma is my 7 month old cat, mellow and superior; and Littlefoot is Karma's little brother, born on the 4th of July... he's the scamp of the family.

Our Stormie Girl just loves our oldest son. She will stand in front of him, sit up on her back paws, and wave her front paws at him to get his attention. If he is playing Nintendo, she gets on the arm of the couch and waves them up high right in front of his face. My attempts to capture this have been only partially successful, she gets her paws higher than this many times.

Hey everybody,

I feel like I'm on a 50 year old computer. Our server worked on themselves yesterday afternoon and I think they need to work on themselves again. Wasn't here last night because the storms moved in. They weren't bad but I didn't want to take a chance on the computer. Boring night!

Bunnicula,
I bet you never fully turned your back on the turkey. Know what you mean about blue heads, red heads and waddles. And Benjamin Frankiln wanted to make them the National bird. I don't know which bird is hornier, a turkey or a goose. You really gave your all working in a bird sanctuary with a turkey!

Mybid,
Spaz loks an awful lot like our Sigmond. Hes a little Hitler and sigmond is a Col. Sanders.

Maui,
We're going to have to compare cats. Get votes on which one is fatter, Sasha or Fatso. I've got to figure out how to put pictures on here. She weighs about 18 lbs but has long hair. Hope Fatso doesn't have the same problem Sasha does. HA HA! Won't get into that one.

Preacher,
I hope you are doing better.

Cute stories and cute pics, everyone!

busybiddy - do you think Dobby could be a Shepherd/Corgi mix? Her face (and those great ears!) look a lot like a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

bunnicula - I'm still laughing about the hamster getting vacuumed up by the Saint Bernard. Poor kid.

Rainybear: I was thinking the same thing Dobby does look like a corgi. If you block out the end of the nose and just look from the eyes up he looks just like a corgi.
That would account for his smaller size too.

Well I have to share doggi stories too.
Cleo is the smartest dog I have ever had. Eerie smart at times. She has a toy basket full of beanie babys that I pick up for her at yardsales but her favorite is this weird puppet that looks like animal on the muppets.
Last week I brought home a new deer puppet and we played with it and then I put it up.
When my husband got home I told her to go get her NEW puppet and show it too him. He rolled his eyes at me with his usual cynisicm until Cleo came trotting back with her new puppet in her mouth.
I then told her to go get her old puppet and she went and got her animal puppet.
How does she knows what the words new and old mean I don't know. We tested several times and she does know the difference.
She knows about 8 of her toys by name and if you tell her to go find her bluejay she will tear up the house looking for it if it is not in her box.

preacher, we had a maine-coon mix cat. The only thing I can tell you is other than needing very regular brushing is that mine liked water. He'd wash his toys in the water bowl quite regularly and frequently forgot them there until later

My husband had a Maine Coon when he was younger. He got her in Maine when she was a kitten and brought her home to Ohio, where she still lives with his parents. I fell in love with her when we went to visit last year, and I wanted so badly to take her home with me!

I don't know much about Maine Coons except this one is a real sweetheart. Hubby said she had scurvy for a while and a lot of her hair fell out, but she's better now. She has a very nice demeanor and is a beautiful cat.

Lots of brushing for long-haired kitties!
