Several years ago [and after having left 'brrom clean' several homes and apartments from Estates] we emptied out our house and wanted to enjoy the hardwood underneath, we vowed to NEVER AGAIN go with wall to wall.

Have you looked....really looked at that stuff after its been down awhile? MHO is that it is gross & unhealthy. In short, you can clean and deodorize wooden or tile, but in carpet....the crud of the world will never 'come clean'. Lets not even think about all the little creatures that have this installed forest as living quarters.

One fine alternative is good quality Oriental rugs. $$ spent wisely along with turning and periodic cleaning will last you AT LEAST a lifetime. Have you ever seen the look on a families face when 'the old rug' that Grandma had in the back bedroom goes up at the Estate Aution and brings a couple of thousand bucks? Grandma bought quality and sixty/eighty years later....made a profit!

Good luck

Ask the sales rep "If I was paying for the carpet, and it was going in your house, which would you pick, and why" This is what we did when we selected our carpet. What he picked was almost the most expensive, and the padding (very important selection) was the best they had. That is what we bought.

This carpet was installed in our living room, hall, and stairs. (we replaced the carpet in the dining room with oak flooring)We have children running in and out all year.

In the bedrooms, we bought very inexpensive carpet since there is so much less traffic. This helped make up for the expensive carpet in the high traffic areas.

At the same time, my father re-carpeted his house. (The Jones Syndrom) He chose a mid-grade carpet and padding for the whole house. We spent about the same amount of money for the job. This summer, he replaced his carpet again, and ours still looks great.

Hi again - HCQ is right about the longer nap showing fewer footprints, etc. That's part of why I so highly recommend this 'stain-proof' carpet I mentioned a couple of posts ago. I have the longest nap and it's *extremely* thick. We're talking kid's playroom for two years (neighborhood children in and out all day) and you cannot see any wear on the carpet whatsoever. As I said, it's so think that it's extremely stiff and a pain to lay. But the carpet is wonderful.

We recently put in new carpet and I spent $50.00 and saved several hundred! We purchased a remnant (5x7) of the carpet we were considereing and placed in in front of the couch..after walking on it for a month and trying to clean it we decided it was not the right one for us. Living with a sample for a while can make all the diffrence

Actually, barbarake, I said that the longer the nap the MORE footprints will show. However, as you've found, that's mitigated somewhat as you go up in grade, because the density of the weave helps the fibers stand upright.
