Rainybear, oh it's so much fun going though the boxes. We get so excited and it really is a high, that's why I say it's additive. But, you should see us when we get a bad or so so locker. We start grabbing boxes and tear though them looking for that one great thing that would make our day. Ha!

mybiddness, I bet you can see me doing my happy dance, huh? And you know a great find is a great find if you find one at a time or a whole locker full.

O.K. I just went in and interupted hubbies news hour to inform him that we were missing out on storage unit auctions. He lunged at me. Says that if I bring home one more "great buy" he's gonna wring my neck.

The thing is he's gonna have his surgery in the a.m. and I figure I'll have at least a 3 or 4 week head start before he can stop me.

It just sounds like too much fun.

Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

Thought I'd check in and let you know what other treasures I've found so far in the storage unit. Two boxes of 1946-47 Vernon Ware. Four very old glass oil lamps. Two large crates of old (not repro's) crate and advertising labels. Old sheet music. For the last two hours I've been absorbed in reading old newspapers, and magazines. This always happens, and I waste so much time. I can't just sort it and move on.

Haven't gotten near the books yet. But, did get a more accurate count of the boxes of books. Looks like about 60 boxes. What's sad about that is we don't really like to deal with books. I know there are plenty of book sellers here that would go crazy over them. But, from the few I've seen the condition may be questionable. But, I won't get to them for day's so I can't really say.

Just taking a break for a few so got to get back to work.

I did a few storage auctions a while back. I too enjoyed the adventure of trying to find the gold in the mess...Alot of mess...

I also felt a sadness. What happened that these folks couldn't pay for their units? Also from the belongings you get a sense of what the person was like. I got one once that had old travel books...Did this person just dream of travelling or did they actually go places?

Thanks to all for the info. Congratulations Chococake....With my luck I'd get Garbage bags filled with Garbage bags.....LOL...I'm not in a financial state at this time to get involved with this form of buying and selling, but in the future that may change. Right now I turned to a craft that I learned as a child growing up on a Reservation in the Florida Everglades....I design Native American Chokers....It's not a great source of income at the moment but hopefully that will change soon.

After my husband and I bought our first 2 units 12 years ago, my mother-in-law sat on the floor of our patio until 3 in the morning yippin' about this find or that one (she was 74 at the time.)
2 years ago we took over the management of a storage facility and are not allowed to bid at our own autions (we can go to non-company sales though we don't do it, afraid someone might accuse us of something)
In answer to the question as to why they don't pay there are severl reasons, a lot of the time a parent has gotten sick or moved into smaller quarters and put their things in storage. They pass away and we have no way of knowing and the relatives don't know they have storage. Husbands and wives split up and one takes their stuff out and stops paying the bill. Tenant's move across country, expecting to come back and after a few years just decide it isn't worth paying for because they forgot what they left behind. The most common is people are forced to move or evicted and just don't have the money.
