Well, AW has jumped the shark with this announcement, looks like we'll be seeing them in the f*&kedcompany HOF in a month or two. Back to alt.marketing.online.ebay...

Naru, I'm embarrassed, you said in one sentence what it takes me four paragraphs!

bhearsch, I have enjoyed many of your insights, I hope to see you around somewhere.

Toke! I just realized how much I'll miss youˇ

Even you Amy, I've been very un-nerved lately that I have agreed with many of your latest posts! Have you mellowed?

mrpotatohead, I think I found your ear behind the cushion of my couch, there was gum stuck to it.

pocono, good luck in the hills!

Like we used to say when we were leaving the pool hall at 4:00 in the morning, see ya in church!

I see another day has gone by that AW has not answered my questions. (and others as well) No surprise.
Their silence speaks volumes!

I've learned a great deal from the posters here and I Thank You for All your help!
It was fun... (most of the time
I will Miss Ya's!

I have posted over 300 times and have been here since the beginning. Now I need to have a credit card!!! Why not just tell it like it is? The AuctionWatch message center is closing.

I stopped posting here several weeks ago. Now I see that many are joining me. I feel very badly for the wonderful AW MOD SQUAD - best of luck in your next adventure.

As John Wayne rode off into the sunset, so do I. Over hill, andale.

Well, nothing much for me to say that has not already been said.

I have not been here that long to make any freinds, nor have I probably helped anyone with my comments.

I HAVE learned a thing or two from the people here and for that I am grateful.

Thanks to all of you that posted, I had an enjoyable time. Also a big thanks to the MODS for trying to keep a level playing field.

Sorry AW, but don't expect a CC # email from me either.

What a shame but I guess that it's not the first company to shoot themselves in the foot.

Long_gone...nice to see you posting again, even if it is under sad circumstances

Have I mellowed...naw! Just learned how to express the same opinions in a different way. (who says an old dog can't learn new tricks!)

I'm not sure what I'm going to do without AW. Not sure if I want to give a CC (leaning real far towards no). I have fine tuned my auctions and business practices from participating in discusions on this forum. I have learned of new changes at ebay here, turned to these boards to see if ebay was down...this has been the pulse of the online auction business. To bad AW has decided to pull the plug

Reading over the new message center rules this morning (it IS morning here), I was quite distressed to see this wording:

We may reveal your identity (or whatever information we know about you) in the event of a complaint or legal action arising out of or related to any message posted by you

Now I knew they would reveal info based on legal action but what constitutes a "complaint"???

That clause has always been in the CGs.

Back in the first one from January 2000, it was under the "Additional Message Center Terms & Community Guidelines". When AW changed the rules in March 2001 (when the fees were introduced and the Moderator's Corner disappeared), it was under 8.3 Deleted Messages.

Trust me on this

However, AuctionWatch seems to think that they'll be able to keep things going with out the main draw of the site. I would strongly disagree with them from a business perspective. IMNHO, this will be the final nail in the casket for AuctionWatch. The posting level will drop dramatically, the number of visits will drop even more dramatically, ad revenue will drop like a rock and they will have to subsist on the revenue from AuctionManager. I have my doubts that they will be able to do so without some sort of draw like the Message Center to keep drawing people in.

How TOTALLY true! I found AW by way of a messageboard reference on an Ebay board! Granted I never personally signed up (and will be gone after the 1st) but I would guess many who did sign up, did so after discovering AW in a similar way. And yes, the AW messageboards are what kept me checking out the site numerous time per day, EVERY day. Very helpful and informative posts from many different people with mucho experience.

To stifle what is likely the BEST ENTRY POINT for their website just to save a few bucks on moderators (who needs'em anyway) seems pretty shortsighted. I mean, Jeeeez, if putting up with some raucous flaming now and then is what's necessary to keep the boards open without verification, then so be it---but I for one will be bidding these fine boards a fond farwell, as I will not provide my CC number just to ask a couple questions of private citizens who aren't even employed by AW.

Add me to the list of those saying goodbye. I have been here for years and have learned SO much from many folks.

I just don't see how putting a credit card on file makes someone a more reliable poster.

I emailed you Blanche for an alternative site.

See ya AW. Will miss you when you are GONE.

Hello all-

I'm not hanging around, really too bad to hear about the changes here at AW.

I'm heading over to the other site with the messageboard... See you on the flipside.

Bye AW.

Jonathan

You're just jealous because the voices only talk to me.

Well, looks like one of my last posts here. I can not believe that many people will give a CREDIT CARD number just to post messages. I've been reading these boards for a couple of years now, I will miss it when it disappears. Sorry for the moderator staff, I hope they gave you guys more than six days notice!

I believe when the message board goes, so will a lot of PAYING customers, this is just one step closer to the demise of this site. I hope another can be found on the web, I've enjoyed participating and reading everyone's messages.

I never was a paying customer, never will be. It's their sandbox. If they want to fill it with manure, it's their business, not mine.

Message boards are pretty trivial to put up, though, so I can't imagine there won't be lots of other alternatives available.

I've been an AW fan and user for a long time. I got a little bent when you began charging for services, after saying to myself a 100 times, if AW was my company I'd be charging people to use my site! I'm sure the new message center format will work out fine for everyone. Will I give up my CC number to post on the message center? If what I have to say will help someone sure I will.
Thanks AW moderators & good luck on your new assignments.

I called Visa and asked if I could collect and hold people's credit card numbers for Identification purposes only. They said it would be a violation of my Merchant agreement as well as against Visa policy.

The only time a merchant can collect credit card numbers is at the point of purchase or for a security deposit using a post-authorization.

Perhaps someone needs to call AuctionWatch's Merchant Account Provider.

Dumbass move by AW....the Net has 1000's of successful unmoderated boards which only require a posters VALID ISP email address in a registration process.

post-authorization

Hmmm.....maybe AW interprets that just a wee bit different? As we now have to be authorized to post?

It wasn't all that long ago that credit card companies ADVISED you to NOT permit your CC# to be used for identification purposes when cashing checks. That certainly upset the "way it was always done" at many retailers when you refused to give more than a drivers license with your check....but it was finally accepted as a fact of business life that MY CC# is NONE of your business unless it is being used to MAKE a purchase!

The recent problems with government CC/Impac cards showed that just about anything is possible....I am just not comfortable adding my available credit line to someones data base.....

Guess I turn into a lurker after tomorrow!

in California it is illegal for a merchant to take your credit card number for identification verification.

Used to be that all merchants would ask for your driver's licence # and your credit card number when you paid by check. Many would then charge your credit card if your check bounced.

Other credit card holders were finding unauthorized charges on their card even if their checks had not bounced.

California made it illegal about 20 years ago now.

Isn't AW located in Calif?

What would one do if the WalMart greeter asked to see a CC as ID as you walked in the door and refused you entrance if you didn't have one or didn't show it.

Granted, we almost always buy something when going to WalMart but we could be just browsing or comparing prices....

I guess they could advise us we are being watched and are not to interact with other customers or we'll get the boot...

If it is against CC merchant account policy (and I'm not yet certain of this), then the mere action of a CC being required for entrance to post (interact) on the MC would be defacto violation of the policy; a user would not have to be coerced into leaving their CC number for the violation to occur.

If WalMart turned one away for not showing a CC and they complained to the merchant bank, would they get satisfaction? Would WalMart be disciplined? Who knows...

Good subject though...
