I guess I'm somewhere in the middle. I'm not a "WEINIE" seller as you so eloquently put it. I am sometimes willing to offer options not listed in my TOS, if a person ask me nicely. If someone asks for express shipping or media mail I'm probably not going to say no, just because I list priority in my auctions. If a person is nasty I'm not likely to be accommodating.

Holding a person to the TOS regardless of the circumstances is anal in my estimation.

Big time sellers who are moving 10,000 items per month pretty much have to stick to their TOS. Special requests would probably not be an option. Small sellers like myself who average around 200-250 items per month have the option of giving it a "personal touch". There's nothing wrong with that.

You should not accept the lack of payment since you were clear about your terms. Make the buyer pay the rest of the total fees, and make sure to collect extra to pay for the double paypal fees. If he balks, reject his/her payment and leave a negative. You will probably get a retalitory, but you can give a truthful response along with the neg towards him will clear you.
One other point, for the person who doesn't respond to e-mails, you can count on the fact that I will not be bidding upon any of your auctions as that is the most important thing that I look for. I believe anyone that is not willing to respond to a potential buyer is not trustworthy.

Bugler1998 asked: BTW, I sell using media mail frequently. AS far as I can tell, AW has no way of saying I ship by media mail. The only choice that is close is 1st class. Although my auction terms say media mail, the template says 1st class. NObody has ever mentioned this as a problem, but I wonder. Any solution to this?

Yes, there is a way. Go into "My account", Seller's Preferences, then Global. The very first thing that comes up is shipping and handling. After option 1 & 2, is "custom". You can put in there your shipping charge and type in "Media Mail" or anything else.

BTW, I ask for $3.00 s&h, and put in via "USPS". Sometimes I ship 1st class, and sometimes media, whichever is cheapest. I didn't say the $3.00 was just for SHIPPING. I try to cover packing materials and fees from Ebay, AW, and PayPal as much as possible. As a buyer one must realize the stated price is not always JUST for the shipping cost, unless it is stated that way.
I believe asking for a reduction in shipping charges after winning an auction is a huge no-no, very tacky and downright rude.

Imalulu: Thanks for the advice on changing global preferences. It worked fine, and gave me a chance to checkout other preferences to update them.

To Bugler 1998: I am so glad I could help.
I'm learning a lot, too, and reading these messages has helped.

I wish there was a "search" available for topics here, though.

I see that we can't charge a surcharge to cover PayPal or other fees, but we can for other things associated with shipping, which is what I do, but still a reasonable price to the customer.

bp - Although it annoys me, it is not worth my time or a negative feedback to fight over $2.00 -- I just shipped it and moved on. The buyer was a pain, so I blocked their ability to bid on future items. It happens, but very rare (3/3000 auctions).

As a seller, I HATE Ebay's checkout. I now include the following paragraph in all of my auctions, and would invite other sellers to copy and paste it onto their auctions as well. Let's make it clear to Ebay, that we don't need them interfering with our customer service!!:

Please note, that the reason why I don't use Ebay checkout is because it's like my landlord forcing their way into my shop, and operating the cash register without my permission. It also keeps me from giving more personalized service. Would you want someone doing that to you?

CHECKOUT ROCKS probably because i prefer Billpoint. Buyer just enters information and pays me with Billpoint after the auction is over. Made my life soo much easier.
