was watching CNBC last night and they were discussing the recent rise in paypal stock price due to the fact eBay is lining up a bid to purchase them very soon!.

This can ONLY be good news as surely the customer service aspect of paypal could only get better if this were to happen.....

If it happened I wonder what would happen to Billpoint? Maybe just incorporate it all into one?

If you lived in a town where there were only 2 gas stations and one station bought the other how many "pricing wars" would you expect to see in the future?

The removal of competition is not an incentive to lower prices or improve customer service.

i am merely refering to the customer service aspect of paypal which personally i find a complete joke.....i was in no way refering to the issue of what would happen with fees.

dont assume things will always stay the same, ebay may want paypal to develop new products,i wont be surprised ebay will offer one stop financial services to its sellers.
i was just browsing costco site ,take a look at their service section-it offers insurance plan, phone answering service, rebates etc, checking account with nightly sweep into money market mutual fund etc.

What could make the situation become very interesting for Paypal shareholders is if there was a bidding war for Paypal between eBay and the banks that issue credit cards.

I waited on hold the other day for Paypal for 1/2 an hour before getting someone on the line. Then the person had the GALL to be nice, informative and completely helpful. How dare he!!

Paypal has really worked hard to make transaction easy to pay for buyers. I can't think of any other system (including credit card merchant accounts) where all you need to do is type in your password and your transaction is virtually complete.

Unless you are a Powerseller, Paypal's service is far superior to Ebay's. Ebay seems to have NO customer service at all.

Before becomming a PS I could not get any answers from Ebay CS. Nothing but canned responses in Email.

I have had much more luck with PP's service than Ebay's.

If eBay buys out PayPal, watch the first thing to go is the debit cards, that come in so handy.

IF eBay buys PayPal they'll probably just intergrate it into Billpoint

That would be the DEATH of PayPal.

FeeBay typically ruins every company they buy!

PayPal's customer service sucks!

Billpoint's customer service sucks!

PayPoint's customer service couldn't be any worse and probably won't get any better.....

paypal is better known than billpoint and paypal staff by now are old war horses who have seen more battles and wear more battle scars than billpoint staff.
i would think paypal will take over billpoint, but ebay does not own a bank ,so putting paypal and ebay together wont do much until they get a bank involved.
by the way, billpoint is 100% owned by ebay now, wells fargo is out of the picture

I will tell you if you have never heard most everyones customer service is for the birds. I have not had any problems with PayPal. When I have called them they have been very helpful and also pleasant. When I emailed eBay's customer service to find out how to talk to a real live person They informed me they never talk with anyone on the phone. So who's service would you want. PayPal and have to wait or eBay with nothing. Not hard to figure that one out.

We've had minor disputes with both services and I wasn't impressed with either. It took forever to get it settled with Billpoint and It was never resolved with PayPal. We finally just let it go and moved on.

if this does happen or anyone else buys Paypal I hope one good thing can come out of it they will be REGULATED and become FDIC insured.

I think then I may return to using their service.

I've always found Paypal's customer service to be excellent, with one minor exception one night when Paypal was having major glitches, and tons of people were trying to call late in the evening.

Except for that one attempt to call them, every time I have called, I have been connected to a real person in a reasonable period of time, that person was knowledgeable and helpful. Ditto for the times I have e-mailed dameon.

I've talked to people at eBay today, but of course they will neither confirm or deny the speculation about a possible merger.

Frankly the two things that worry me about a potential merger is that Paypal's customer service will decline, and that fees may go up since there would be no real auction payment provider competition.

As for eBay ruining every company they associate with, that is not exactly true. The problem isn't with eBay ruining the company, it is the fact that in the past the companies eBay has acquired or partnenred with either were second raters, who just couldn't handle the volume of eBay, or they were a company that was aquired against their wishes, that did not put it's full effort into trying to make the partnership a success.

I've already made money on the merger rumors, both from Paypal stock I bought on the IPO, and additional stock I bought today. To maintain those gains, I hope the rumor proves true, at least from that standpoint, though I am not sure how I feel long term as to the usability of the service if the merge happens.

I offer both Paypal and Billpoint. In the 30 auctions I had end yesterday, 23 sold. of those 23, 10 were paid within one day through paypal, none through Billpoint. I expect one or two will trickle in through Paypal over the next week. The rest will mail checks or money orders.

However, an eBay representative said the company was happy with the adoption rates of its own Billpoint payment service. eBay does not disclose the total number of people who use Billpoint....

The fact that eBay isn't disclosing this information just shows what an embarassment Billpoint has become. If Billpoint worked, eBay would be trumpeting the numbers. They can't even put a decent spin because 90% of buyers use Paypal.

eBay already has an online payment system. So why buy another one?

Another big fishy eats little fishy. We will all be Billpoint members then, like it or not. PayPal will be poof.

i cannot see ebay just telling all paypal users you have to use billpoint....they are much smarter than that.....i guess they would try to integrate paypal at the end of the auctions so you can pay for them immediately.

Personally, I hope PayPal remains independent of eBay. EBay has a strangehold on the online auction market, if they owned the #1 payment service they could insure that sellers wouldn't be easily applying their trade elsewhere. EBay has to be kicking themselves for not purchasing PayPal a long time ago.

Best senario to me would be for eBay to recognize that PayPal is an important selling tool and stop trying to brush it into some corner. PayPal is too popular to brush aside now anyway. I see countless auctions that have payment terms as simple as:

PayPal, Money Orders, Cashier's Checks, sorry no personal checks.

PayPal doesn't need the banners or logos anymore.

Here's a blurp from TheStreet.com with some numbers of interest.

When eBay announced it was going to more closely integrate eBay Payments into its site, Pay Pal shares tanked, as the move was seen as a serious threat to Pay Pal. Now, after looking more closely at the numbers, most on Wall Street have changed their tune: they see Pay Pal as the threat to eBay, and a rumor even swirled this week that eBay could buy out the online payment giant. The numbers seem to bear this out: last year, payment volume grew about 18% for both eBay Payments and Pay Pal's auction business in the third quarter, while Pay Pal grew 24% in the fourth quarter with eBay Payments growth slowing to 16%.

Baldauf writes in a recent report that eBay is "likely to continue to face an uphill battle against Pay Pal."

I think it's a classic David and Goliath story, and I like it.

Condolances to any that shorted PayPal's stock.

companies which provide services can beef up their customer service with toll free numbers if they charge enough to pay for it.

Ebay does not like to compete, so they just buy up whatever threatens their business.

"I hope one good thing can come out of it they will be REGULATED and become FDIC insured.

If that happens, there will be more fees. The savings over years really adds up and cuts most of the risk of having money sitting in an un-FDIC insured account.

If Ebay buys paypal me and my collegues (adult category sellers)will be royally F*****'d with a capital "F"

Ebay already rides on their moral High Horse by not allowing Billpoint to be used anywhere in the Mature audience categories.

Leaving us no alternative but to use C2it and others like Ecount (and who the hell uses Ecount anyways)

Ebay has no problem collecting our fees but we get half of the value of services mainstream sellers get.

No billpoint, none of our adult items can be in the Ebay stores. Our stuff does not come up in searches through the main site, you have to do the 2nd login then go to mature audiences THEN do your search.

So if Ebay buys paypal they will impose those same rules to us there and I might as well close all of my accounts as I will be out of business totally. Only 2-3 out of 10 fo my transactions are paid by check or money order.
