Just heard on Bloomberg that eBay is buying Paypal for $1.5 billion...... wonder if their awful (Paypal) customer service will get any better.

I'm wondering if eBay will screw up Paypal, and what eBay will do with all the services Paypal offers other than auction payments ?

I would imagine they will combine billpoint and paypal, BUT, eBay isn't too good at merging units- remember how half.com was supposed to be rolled into eBay ? I wouldn't doubt if 2 years from now there is still paypal and billpoint at ebay.

I'm wondering about all those non-ebay sites that use paypal payment systems, as well as the vendor pages on paypal. Nearly every site that uses the paypal payment system is a quasi-competitor for eBay. Many eBay sellers that also have a web site use paypal.

These other sites that use Paypal also create a branding problem for ebay. How will ebay be able to stop people from associating ebay with all the paypal buttons all over the net?

ebay can't do too much to mess up paypal or someone will just start another service just like paypal. Ebay wasn't able to build billpoint into a major player, so how will they manage paypal ?

Will ebay also use paypal info to check fee avoidance, such as offering upgrades or other items and then comparing the paypal invoice to the ebay sale price ?

I'm not sure this is a good move by ebay.

eBay want a piece of all the action from start to finish now they got it.....like you said how they handle the whole situation could be a mess....half.com has gone downhill since they integrated it with eBay

The article I read said eBay will phase out Billpoint and help users transfer to Paypal.

Phasing out billpoint will be interesting. My thinking is that most sellers using billpoint don't like paypal.

The ebay auction format could become a minor player for the ebay conglomerate before it's over.

that would be me I use billpoint only refuse to use paypal after a problem which was resolved in my favor but made me aware of potential problems in the future so switched to billpoint so far so good....

And how long will it be before eBay requires sellers to accept Paypal?

The sky is falling.....

The way ebay will require sellers to offer paypal will be similar to the storefront deal. Probably when they introduce the new fixed price format, the seller will have to accept paypal.

The auction format may be the step child before its over.

The article also stated that paypal will remain its own separate brand. So if they're getting rid of billpoint, ebay will no longer have a payment system directly associated with the auctions.

That will kill a lot of buyers, like me, who don't trust PayPal.

RB- You don't trust Paypal, but it will be very difficult to avoid. Your best bet is to use Paypal but protect yourself as much as possible. Do safe Paypal.

Do safe Paypal

That's an oxymoron ... you are not allowed to use the words "safe" and "PayPal" in the same sentence.

If it ever comes to the point where I will am told "use PayPal or you can't buy anymore on eBay", that will be the day I start paying a little more for my wants at other on line venues and say goodbye to my eBay selling friends.

If you looked at PayPal's acceptance on eBay and you read the news this shouldn't be a surprise. For months it has never been a question of "if" but "when."

Let us bow our heads for a few moments of silence for BillPoint.

When the acquisition is finalized, we plan to phase out eBay Payments (Billpoint) as we integrate the PayPal service.

I have been with PayPal for 2 years and had aprox. 400 PayPal transactions with no problems. I have had many billing problems with eBay along with lots of other problems. I am not crazy about eBay handling my money.

I am seeing more and more PayPal logos on websites. I think PayPal is getting ready to be extremely big in e-comerce. PayPal is to electronic payment systems as eBay is to online auctions and now fixed price shopping. They are a natural pair of giants. Soon the auction segments will almost be an embarassment to both of them as they will represent only a very small part of their revenue stream when compared to the fixed price arenas.
I think Amazon is in big trouble and would not want to be holding any of their stock.

together they should have a good shot at taking more business away from amazon.com

This isn't really that surprising. Maybe Yahoo and/or Amazon are next?

For sellers, some of the issues of using Paypal can be solved by setting up merchant accounts on their own website. You would then be using a "bank" to process your auctions. This is going to force a few small businesses to become "legit" due the the Merchant account screenings. New "PayPal" clones will be emerging very shortly, you can count on that.

For buyers there are other options also. Bidpay, PayDirect and the banking solution offered on Auction watch ( C2it ? ).

I love Ebay and Paypal however they still scare me because they are young and trying to reinvent the wheel. Anything goes and there don't seem to be any concerns for traditional business practices. This old geezer is still being very careful dealing with both companies and I don't put all my eggs in one basket. If Enron taught us nothing else it is to be cautious of who is using your money.

I wonder if eBay can do a worse job with Paypal than we have now. I don't accept Paypal now and would be willing to pay a little extra, but Paypal is slimy icky. Somehow I doubt we'll still be seeing Paypal Damon bouncing around the boards. He'll probably go back to selling snake oil tonic.

I don't have a problem with PayPal. I just like
billpoint better. I like the fact that Billpoint
automatically sweeps the money into my account.
I don't want to pay extra for that feature.

I also am concerned with PayPal's customer
service record. If PayPal were to freeze your
account for some unknown reason, would that now
mean you would be suspended from Ebay?

I hope, if this happens that there will be some
positive changes. I guess I will have to go with
PayPal preferred if there is no more Billpoint.

Before you get completely bent out of shape, read the article. "PayPal will continue to be an independant brand. Personally, I won't mind it as I own stock in both companies. & all I can see are good things ahead. I was betting that PayPal would hit $50.00 by the end of the year. I can't figure out why people have such problems with P/P. I have used it for over 2 yrs. & NEVER have had a problem either getting payments or making payments.

Here are some links posted to the Power Seller Discussion Board. The Questions and Answers link is the most informative. Paypal will eventually be part of eBay, replacing Billpoint, so just substitute Billpoint for Paypal and that is what you will have.
