Here's the update on this situation. 8 days after placing the money in my PayPal account, and told that I was dealing with a confirmed address and verified user, Paypal has discovered the fraud and taken back the funds. I asked PayPal fraud what would have happened if I had hit the refund button. Their immediate response was that the money would go back to the credit card account and that would be the end of it for me, no posible further liability. Upon more questioning though, this apparantly is not the case. I was told that if the scam person also had the pin number to the account, and withdrew the funds at an ATM, there could be a liability here. There were other scenarios that involved a potential liability and a possible diversion of the funds away from the credit card and into the scam person's account. At this point Paypal told me(a little hesitantly now) that if this happened the liability would be there's , and that Paypal would take the loss. Uh-huh. RIGHT. I'm glad that I waited and did not hit the refund button.
