I don't post a whole lot, bt I do spend a lot of time reading the threads, laughing, learning, agreeing and disagreeing. (Lurking is what they call it)
Anyway from time to time sellers new to the game will come to ask for advice, for ideas or for help.
As a Power Seller with a few years experience let me offer this little snippet.
DON'T EVER LEAVE FEEDBACK FIRST. NOT TODAY-NOT TOMORROW-NOT GROUNDHOG DAY-NOT ANY DAY.

I guess this is why I prefer lurking.

I always leave feedback first. I have never had a problem. I have 625 positive feedbacks with no negatives. My descriptions are accurate, down to the fine point. I fully refund. When they have fulfilled their part of the sale, i.e. payment and I mail my package my part is done. I cann't help what happens at the post office, the package is out of my hands. I also keep in fully contact with my buyer. I am sure there will always be one and when that day comes I will answer that negative with a truthful response.

I leave it the same time as I send them their shipment notice. Since 1998, I have 2537 positives and one retaliatory negative. Since the neg was from a NPB I had not left feedback. That said, I leave a lot more feedback then I receive. I, too, offer a 100% refund. I depend on repeat customers (collectors). And they are very loyal, thank goodness.

AS A SELLER, I LEAVE FEEDBACK WHEN I SHIP THE ITEM, AS A BUYER ONLY AFTER THE SELLER LEAVES FEEDBACK.
LOVE IT WHEN I GET EOA'S AS A BUYER AND A SELLER ACTUALLY TELLS ME THEY WANT FEEDBACK FIRST... HOPE THEY REALLY DO ENJOY THE SILENCE OR THE NEG IF I AM UNHAPPY...

I always used to leave feedback first until my first neg. Like Libra I fully refund, problem is, my first neg I didn't get the opportunity, a neg appeared without any communication at all, I would have been happy to refund. Since then, I have been glad several times that I have not already left feedback. You get those people who complain about the slightest little thing, but they are reluctant to leave a neg in case they get one back. I fully back up my items, but there are alway buyers who will neg at the slightest opportunity.

This thread is a replay of one sometime back. I almost always leave feedback first. If the buyer is prompt to pay, what more can I ask of him? He has fulfilled his duty. I offer 100% guarantee on my china. I try to be accurate in my description of any item. I have 500 positives & 6 negs. The last one was given before I had even been paid by the buyer because, "She felt I was too negative in my emails" Well, thats life . As JACK says "The Beat Goes On"

Holy cow me and ole sanmar agree on something !! I also always leave feedback after I send the item along with an e-mail telling the item is on the way and giving them all my contact info if there is a problem. I have 10794 positve 13 nuetral and 9 negs so I would say that it is more than beginners luck in fact its several years of customer satisafaction results. If you are professional and informative throughout the transaction a problem will be rare.

That's just Part One of the Buying Process. Part Two involves communication is the auction item is lost or damaged or not to the buyer's ideals.

I used to leave feedback first, then I got slammed with a neg out of the blue, no contact from bidder at all. Now I only leave negative feedback first, positive is now reserved for those who either leave feedback first or tell me they are happy with the item. No contact, no feedback, no exceptions.

My first 5 years on ebay were done by giving feedback first. No longer though. I can't see an advantage in doing so, only disadvantages. For some strange reason, buyers seem concerned about feedback. I think if there is a problem, it actually puts the seller in a stronger position to settle the problem if feedback hasn't been left yet. You might conclude with that attitude that I have a poor feedback ratio and that I have had problems and lots of negs, but the opposite is true. I have over 3000 total feedback (more than 2200 unique) and ZERO negatives on my ebay selling account. I also have 10 neutrals, but 6 are conversions and 2 are from the same person, so really only 3 unique neutrals too...

I've gone to a new level of feedback management. I inform the buyer that payment has been received and I'm prepared to ship as soon as they leave feedback.
I have to explain to a few that I'm simply getting them on record as ready to receive the product and it's my go ahead to ship. My feedback return has been exceptionally high since I started this program, though I have noticed a significant drop in repeat buyers.

Well that went over a couple of heads didn't it, Tom.
I leave feedback when I'm paid, simple as that. Maybe one buyer in 1,500 makes me regret that practice, big deal. Gearing my business for the 99.94% as opposed to the 0.06% seems logical to me.
Some sellers seem to be a bundle of nerves, they hold checks for all purchases, hold feedback on all transactions, and view each buyer as a potential problem. Maybe I'm singularly blessed with well mannered buyers, or maybe some sellers just live on negative experiences.

It's not the sellers that are flaky. The flaky buyers get a glowing positive for merely paying for the item then go on a rampage when something goes wrong in the transaction that is no fault of the seller.
It's all academic anyway as very few of the lazy buyers take the few moments to leave a feedback.

Buyer pays...I leave feedback. Then ship item and don't worry about whether or not they leave feedback.
I have one neg in 4 years and I just don't have time to worry about whether they have left it or not, or to wait till then and try to leave mine at that time.
I know everyone does what works for them, but for me, the transaction is finished when I ship the item. And, I don't hold items for checks to clear either.
If Ebay becomes that big a worry I will just quit selling. I know there are crazy people out there, and someday I will probably run across some. But, why should my really great buyers suffer or why should I make extra work for myself over a few bad apples?
According to the survey, the largest percentage of sellers (37%) leave feedback right after a payment has been received; 18% of the sellers taking the survey leave feedback when the customer lets them know that they have received the item; and 15% wait to leave feedback until after the buyer has left feedback for them.
"I consider a transaction finished when a buyer leaves feedback for me," one PowerSeller explained. "When they give me a positive, then I know they were satisfied with the item, and I will return the favor."
On the buying side, 84% of buyers surveyed said that they leave feedback after they have received the item; 8% said they leave feedback at their convenience, and 4% said they leave feedback for the seller after the seller leaves feedback for them.

As a seller I want the buyer to have the most pleasant experience possible. That means I leave the feedback first.
I do get a few negatives I did not deserve becuase of this. I also realize I occasionally screw up and probably deserve a negative and don't get one.
In the past 6 months I have received only 1 negative (out of 2000 sold items).
I think people put more stock in no negatives than necessary. Some of the most successful sellers on ebay have a very high percentage of negatives.
Almost no one looks at a buyers ratio, but I have had buyers have negatives removed through square trade.

Seller puts on auction, receives payment in timely fashion, mails package with eDC and insurance if paid for, leaves feedback. Isn't this the end of the Sellers responsibility?
Buyer bids, wins auction, buyer pays and receives item as described, leaves feedback. Isn't this the end of the buyers responsibility?
What happens between the two is no responsibility of anyones. I cannot control the USPS and neither can the buyer.
