Well I know where I will be spending my next couple of days. I have already started to upload a bunch of pictures so I'll start now to launch on Wednesday. I find it doesn't matter when I start my auctions the bidding is about the same. Thanks neglus for the update.

I don't think eBay discriminates by top or bottom of the heap ...the email said i received because i indicated (dont remember doing this but oh well..) that I wanted to receive notice of special promotions...so WHIP your way to wherever it is in eBay that you sign up Fetish ( i don't receive eBay junk mail - just stuff like this)

Kira I am here

This is still nickle and dime stuff. If I have a 30 to 35% sell thru rate, then listing fees are still too high even on items under $10. If 1 out of 3 of my items sell that would equal close to 50 cent insertion fee and have to pay final value fee on that. Not worth it. I will wait until December.

lol dbest

So you list on ebay just once a year or so?

Sure is worth burning the midnight oil to me! I would list the items anyway (ok probably not this volume during 3-day period in the summer). Maybe the 50% as opposed to FLD will keep the "riff-raff" "dump their junk" sellers away...or is that wishful thinking???

Okay, let's have a contest to see how high the number of ebay listing will be at it's peak during this promotion. I predict an all time ebay high of 13 million listings.

I use to list on ebay every week, had 95% sell thru rate, did great. Then they upped the fees, then the sell thru rate droped from 95 to 60 to 40 and then 30. During that time the fees went up again slightly. Profits were eaten up by listing fees. I could still list items and make a profit but the profit would be so small it is not worth it. I now only make profit when free listing days are in effect not 50% off. If free listing day comes only once a year then that is when I will list. If it does not come at all then no more ebay. There was a lot of rare collectable dealers on ebay, they have mostly gone by the way side, I was the last hold out but now mostly gone.

dbest:

I only have a 30% sell through as well. And I accept paypal and most of my items sell for $5 or $6. I still consider it a good profit. Just a bigger piece of the pie for Ebay

I also add $1.00 for handling and (don't yell some of you) but I consider handling charges to be my cost of selling and sending the product. This usually covers my Ebay and Paypal fees.

auctionace: Total may hit a little more than that. 3 days is a long time. Of course the bulk of the ads on FLD are all the things everyone saves up that doesn't normally sell. So, this one may not go that high.

I think I will say 12 1/2 million

I know I have got to quit talking and get busy

dbest, sometimes I wonder if you are just trolling here. Where do you get your information? If these dealers were all doing what you do, no wonder they are gone.

Sheesh, I swear some of you won't be happy until ebay buys your inventory for you, sells it for you and then mails it for you too, all at no cost to you. Then you'd probably still sit here and whine because ebay didn't take you to dinner also.

Pssst....... it's the year 2003, it costs $$$$ to make $$$$.

Are items under $9.99 what buyers are looking for on eBay? Great if there are 5 million more auctions on eBay over the next three days, but what good is it if the stuff for sale is not anything anyone wants?

Ironically I am using the summer months to clean out shelves of low-end inventory, but not too many at one time because I am focused on other things this summer. I listed a few things for under $9.99 after I got the notice from eBay. I didn't want to wait until the 11th and have my auctions get caught up in a blitz of low starting-price auctions. A 50% reduction in insertion fees did not tempt me to change from my normally scheduled listing day.

I will be curious to know how sellers who put up gobs of auctions over the next few days do on their sell-rate.

I received the notice also. Nowhere does it mention listing low end "junk". My guess is that Ebay is trying to encourage sellers to list mid - range items at a lower starting price to get buyers bidding earlier and more often during the June slump. There are many sellers, including several posters on this board, who use this strategy on a regular basis. Some start auctions at 99 cents for items that they know by experience will close for $50 to $70. This will be a windfall for those sellers and a good chance for the others to experiment with this strategy. And yes, it WILL bring a ton of junk listings also. Just put on your hip boots before you click the search button.

I think if ebay said they were going to pay you 50 cents for every item you list and no fees, some people would find a reason to complain. They are giving 50% off of listing fees for items starting at under $10 - I start a lot of items at $9.99 to save listing fees. Anyway, it is nice that this is being offered, even if I start a 3 week vacation tomorrow. It's unreal what I read here at times...If business is so bad for you, why not just move on. Sometimes sales go down the tubes in a B&M store, and you have to change or move on...

I'm just dying to know what rare and valuable collectible it is that dbest deals in that has a less than 50% sell thru rate with a profit margin of less that 30 cents.

The stuff I like to buy doesn't start under $9.99. I want to see more listings, but of the nice antiques, not more yard sale or thrift shop crud.

As for my own listings, I won't change my own plans because of saving a few cents. Saving 50 cents per auction just doesn't impact my profit line. I already made enough money through the winter months to see me through the summer. I only use this time to list things I want to clear out of my shelves, so as to make room for my better quality inventory acquisitions which I will sell this winter. And then I never list more than 10 auctions a week during the winter anyway, which maintains me at Silver Level quite adequately.

What I am saying is millions of auctions going up at less than $9.99 just doesn't do it for me. And the sellers I buy from frequently don't start their auctions under $9.99. They start at a price or use a reserve to cover their costs and give themselves a profit, and that price sure is not $9.99.

I don't see people rushing in to their computers, away from the pool and outside barbeque, to say ohmygoodness there is a blitz of low starting price auctions on eBay and wow, I can finally get an afghan or figurine or hula hoop for less than ten bucks. That is why I sure hope the sellers on this board who plan on putting up hundreds of auctions will post their final sell rates. Be surious if their sell-rate goes up or down, and if the average sales price goes up or down.

I am not hotcupoftea on eBay.

As a buyer I think this is the worst thing eBay could do. It is hard enough to find nice items now. We do not need 3 or 4 million more pieces of junk to wade through.

As a seller I will not list anything over these days because I don't want my good items lost in all the junk.

ALL of my items are priced under 9.99 (well almost all) and they are NOT junk!! It depends on the category I guess...postcard sellers are liking this "gift" from eBay...but hot cup is right - just because we can list for 1/2 off, doesn't mean that buyers will come inside in droves to check out all the new auctions...it's summer and, if the weather acts like summer, our buyers are not going to be eBay shopping! This 1/2 off listing day is not a "gift" to them!

Where do you check number of total eBay listings again? I wouldn't even begin to wager a guess on how high they will go...

Ebay has already done the math.
If I listed 100 items yesterday they made $30.00
If I am stupid enough to list 400 during the special offer they will make $60
With the current sell through rate I'll lose $50 instead of $25

But if you only list the 100 items you were likely to list anyway they make $15!

...waiting to hear from PS if relists will be charged .15 or .30 if item doesn't sell...i've been putting my relists in my store in this slow market because don't want to risk another listing fee...at half off listing fee, a relist may be ok

eBay UK sellers got a free listing day if they include PayPal. They threw them a much bigger bone.

PayPal Free Listing Day For eBay: Only standard insertion fees will be credited. Optional feature fees such as Gallery, Bold, Reserve Price, Featured, Buy It Now option on auction-format listings, or Final Value fees, are not included.
For PayPal: Receiving fees and cross-border fees will be credited. Other fees, including withdrawal or return fees, are not included.

eBay may be sending all of Europe a "bone" to get them to list after the VAT tax kicks in July 1.
