The point is that this is against ebay's rules for selling endangered and protected animal parts. The auction is still running. I have to wonder what ebay's liability would be for allowing this auction to continue. I suppose some people are allowed to blatantly violate the rules while others are crucified for doing so.

If the auction doesn't get pulled by ebay then it must be okay. Surely this auction has been turned in many times already.

The potential $'s maybe clouding Ebay's discretion on this auction.

-If Ebay looks the other way, they get final value fees.--Just a thought.

The seller is one of Ebay's power sellers.

I do think elephant ivory which was brought into this country before 1976 is legal to possess. Not sure about other parts like a foot.

If it is at least 100 years old it can be resold if the sale of ivory is permitted in your State and you have proper documentation of age. Otherwise all the antique carvings, lamps, etc. would have been gathered up from all antique shops and destroyed if it is illegal to possess them or resell them.

Reamond...I am not being hypocritical...I meant that mankind everywhere..on the face of this small ( growing ever smaller) planet have exploited and will continue to exploit wildlife and natural resources... and I think the US is a major perpetrator.
In the US we have more of a choice about how we make our money than in other empoverished 3rd world countries. To live here and make money this way, in my eyes, is the same as being a prostitute.

I think kiara is right, old material is not restricted.

I heard that every year about 1,000 elephants go to make piano keys. But that puts 1,000 human piano key makers out of work.

Why don't I feel bad about that? Again, every creature has a purpose from the lowly ant to the killer whale. Everyone and everything was put on this planet for a reason. It doesn't matter that we don't know why.

Once upon a time, man had to kill for food and clothing. Furs kept them from freezing to death in the cold. The Native American took also, but they gave back. They understood the natural order of things. The Europeans came and took for greed, not need. There is no need to own a fur anymore. There is no need for Ivory to make piano keys out of. There is no need to kill a rhino to make medicine out of its tusk. And, there is no need for ebay to allow this auction to continue whether the man has the legal right to sell it or not. It is still against ebay's rules and as offensive as the man in the guitar auction .

"We Americans have already totally exploited our continent's wild animals and natural resources, and I find it hypocritial to demand that Africa and South America do otherwise."

That's interesting logic.

Although we have recognised the error of our past ways, we must not criticise others for doing the same.

Let's see...
When I was young I robbed a store. Today I saw a youth robbing a store but I did not interfere. To do so would have been hypocritical of me.

When I was young I killed a man. Today I saw a man beating a woman, but to interfere would have been hypocritical of me...

Here are ebay's rules on the sale of elephant ivory so this auction may fall under that.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/wildlife.html

This area is complex, and sellers should consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and their state wildlife regulatory agency to ensure that the particular item involved may lawfully be sold. Generally, ivory from African elephants may be sold so long as it was lawfully imported into the United States.

While I don't approve of the item being sold in this auction I will say that I would much sooner admire a beautifully carved piece of ivory that will be around for future generations, than look at all that cheap imported worthless crap from China that eventually clogs up our landfills.

Cheryl: that was a joke, albeit a lame one. The elephants are -making- the piano keys, not being made into piano keys, hence the humans being put out of work.

Sorry, now that I think about it, it was kind of funny. It's been a long hot day!

Auction is still going and it seems like eBay is not going to be shutting it down.

I applaud them for taking the high road in this situation and not bowing to unreasonable requests.

Just received this email from the person who alerted me to this auction:

Hi XXXXX,
Just checked that thread again. Can't believe all the people who say"someone should report this to ebay" or "I wonder if anyone reported it". Since I'm not going to subscribe, I can't post a response, but why aren't ALL those people reporting it?
I reported it to ebay on Sun night & the auctions still haven't been pulled. I think I told you I spoke with US Fish & Wildlife on Mon & they said it was illegal to sell those items in the US & they would investigate. I put a call in to them today to see if I could get a follow up, still waiting for a call back.
So if you're in the mood, feel free to post this info & urge all readers to each report it to ebay. Maybe multiple complaints will get results! I'm starting to feel like friggin Don Quixote!
Signed, XXXXX

Well how many people will it take to report this and get this pulled? Anyone have any idea?

What error ? It doesn't "seem" logical because you make a false assumption that our past actions were done in error. We have the highest standard of living, as well as longer life spans, and we have amassed wealth in amounts greater than ever before.

If the Africans and South Americans want to follow the same path, so be it.
