I have tried to leave 2 second chance offers tonight, and in both cases I get the message "buyer has asked not to receive second chance offers" I don't understand that, if they bid, surely they are interested, and they are always getting it for the amount they bid, so why not accept it? Anyone got any ideas?

I got that message once.
Then I noticed that the buyer had won a different auction so I emailed them instead.
They did want to buy the item and said they didn't know they had it set to refuse them.

The reason that you got that message was because the buyers had selected to not receive second chance offers on the preferences page. They didn't check the box by this notation in their Change Your Notification Preferences section.

Second Chance Offer Notice
Send me seller offers through eBay for items that I have bid on but did not win.
Note: Only purchases completed on eBay are covered by eBay services.

Some bidders may feel like they were shilled if they accept second chance offers.

They never receive the offers but they may feel liked they're being shilled and change their notification preferences to not acceopt the offers.

If it makes you feel any beeter my track record with 2nd Chance offerings is only about 3 accepted out of about 12 offered.

Jacks on target. Consumerism as a form of competition. I won, I denied you the privilege of overpaying is taken away.

Rather than offer a second chance I relist with a buy it now at the closing price or just below. Anyone can buy it then.

I hate the second chance system. I always go around it and offer the item to the lower bidders with about a 90% success rate. Against ebay rules? Sure. But what the heck. With all the fees they get from me on non-selling items, this just evens the field a little.

Problem is, the only way to contact someone once the auction has closed, is by a Second Chance offer. I think you are right AuctionAce, I am sure some buyer don't realize that they have the offer turned off. When someone bids several times, they are obviously interested.

Is the default "on" or "off"?

I have it turned off myself, I don't want a "second" chance offer. Jack and Dave both have it right... it's the thrill of the WIN!

Also, in a case i just had for a vintage vending machine, i think maybe the runner-up bidder gets pi**ed that they bid so high, thinking they were vying for a very-hard-to-find item ... so when i send them a 2nd Chance couple days ago, they're probably kind of mad to find out we have more than one of those items. [sort of puts the supply/demand in a different perspective]... they haven't answered our 2nd chance offer yet, and they're just hoping i list the other machine[s] soon, at a low starting price again. [but i won't heh, heh! ... i'll wait a few months ... this *did* end up with the bids at more than twice as much as we thought it would go] .........

Last November I had the best experience with a second chance bidder.

I lost my job last August, and was fortunate enough to have ebay as a viable backup. I took my last paycheck and bought about 50 of the same exact football jersey in different sizes for $15 each. I started bidding at $35 each. I was quite successful selling them between $45 and $75 during September and October. Well, November rolled around, and I had two left in XL. Two bidders went at it for a week, until the final bid went to $210.00. I immediately emailed the second bidder to tell them I had one extra, which he jumped on. Trust me when I say this was not a common jersey and my auction hits were getting in the 400 range for one shirt on a 7 day auction. No one else at the time had these available even though they were mass produced.

If it wasn't for this particular jersey being available, I wouldn't have ever survived long enough to open my own store. Now I am self sufficient, and don't need a boss to tell me what to do so that I can make pennies while they get the glory and the money.

As a buyer I love second chance offers!!! There have been a number of cases where I was given the opportunity to take advantage of this neat feature and jumped at the chance. I have to admit I felt a certain amount of satisfaction in knowing that I got the item I wanted at the price I wanted and that the highest bidder paid more. hee hee........

Stopwhining, the few times I took advantage of the second chance offer I had been the initial bidder of the item and set my max bid to be the same as the initial bid - so, I'm not the gullible person it may seem I was based on my first post. Saving even as little as 50 cents over the highest bidder makes me happy - call me the big spender - hee hee.

The old saying about a "fool and his money are soon parted" definitely doesn't apply to me - I know exactly how much an item I am searching for is worth and what I am willing to spend on it. Noone will ever manipulate me into paying more than I am willing to spend - I'd walk away before parting with my hard earned money.......

I had an auction end this past week for $62 - I had no idea it would go that high, and I had two of this item. I offered it to the next bidder, they did not want it. I offered it to the third bidder, who was close to the other two, and he did not want it! I will reauction, watch it only sells for $20, oh well. 2nd chance used to be better, lately I think I am running at about 15-20% people buying on second chance...

If the "second chance" offer comes to me because some schmuck that had the high bid on something didn't pay for it I will refuse unless the offer is for what my bid was BEFORE the loser outbid my proxy. I mean if I have a $15 proxy, but was the high bidder at, say, $9 until some deadbeat bid $15.50 to outbid my $15 proxy then refuses to pay or whatever, then unless the seller offers it to me for $9 forget it. As far as I am concerned, the difference between my $9 and the sellers "2nd chance" to me at $15 (my proxy) is a $6 shill, even if it wasn't intentional on the sellers part.

The above happened to me recently, and the seller couldn't understand why I didn't take the 2nd chance for $15. S/he acted like I was a deadbeat! because I didn't want to pay what my proxy was and not what my legit high bid was before some puke decided to bid with no intention of paying what s/he bid to outbid me.

I would have been receptive to an out and out offer to sell it to me for say $11 or $12, as that was what the "real" value of the item was to me, although I would have paid the $15 of course had I actually WON the auction and incurred the obligation to pay the final auction price.

I don't blame a seller for trying to get $15 out of me, I just can't bring myself to accept the offer.

As a seller, I NEVER make second chance offers. I just neg the deadbeat, relist and move on.

- Tim

Another angle could be this-what if you had
3 or 4 of the same item-the first person bids $50.00 the 2nd $40.00 and the 3rd $30.00.You offer 2nd chances to the lower 2 bids-wouldnt the first person be pissed off they bid so high knowing after the feedbacks came in and found out 2 other people got the same article for lower price?

Easy!
When they were out bid they bought it somewhere else!

Or: they didn't really want it that bad!

Remember: Out of site out of mind!

I've bid on a lot of things I was glad to be outbid on!

Also: I never offer the second chance,if they really wanted it, they would have been the high bidder!!

losers suffer from inferiority complex and have low self esteem.
if someone does not want the item and you make him an offer,it just make him feel worse about himself, result would be LOWER SELF ESTEEM!!
they will use excuse like shill bidding or not in the mood,or just please go away,my mother in law is in town or my dog eats my homework, but we all know why-losers are losers,no need to rub it in by giving him a second chance.

Here is what happened to me. I bid on an item lost the bid in the sniping time. I waited for a second chance offer because I knew the seller probably had more to sell as that is what their selling preference was. I waited over a day, I went back in to see if they had listed the item again and they didn't but I did notice another seller with the same merchandise and I bought from her. Then two days later I received the second chance offer. It was to late then. If they had sent it out immediately I would have bought it. But the irony about it is I got the item cheaper than the second offer was.

I have used the 2nd offer once and the buyer used it. I did send it immediately so that the buyer wouldn't bid on any other sellers item.
