I ma trying to help an old friend with this. He has his old Davy Crockett Hanger that he used when he was a boy in the 50's. I havent seen it, only got a verbal description over the phone. The hanger is in the shape of a saddle, made of sheet rock? (that's what he said he thinks it is made out of) Anyway, he said it has "Davy Crockett" written on it. I can NOT find anything on it. Does anyone know any websites where I can check this out for him?????

Happy Turket day everyone GOBBLE GOBBLE to you all!

I'll bet there's a Davey Crockett museum somewhere. Did you search on Google? A museum curator would be able to tell you more about this.

I couldn't find anything at all. 12Pole may have something as what company would produce Davey Crockett hangers out of sheetrock?

It's one of those items where a picture is needed. Is the name just written on or molded into it?

The only material that I can think of that looks like sheetrock is perhaps chalkware.

Gives whole new meaning to Sheetrock Hangers

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

"[i]Gives whole new meaning to Sheetrock Hangers{i/]"

No kidding, that IS funny!!! Oh, the name is molded into the hanger. My friend is a contractor. I don't trust his descriptions "made of sheetrock"? HUMMMMM

I talked to him last night. He said he would bring the hanger over for me to take a foto of it.

I have no idea what it's made of. I will find out more when I finally see the darn thing. I'll try to post a foto of it here when I do. Thanks everyone! Still no closer to an answer. I think it's kind of strange that there is NOTHING in any books or websites on this silly hanger. HUMMMM Either it's home made or it's really rare. It's going to be interesting

Not familiar with a Davey Crocket hanger, but I would bet the material is something like the Syroco(?) wood composite used back in the 50's and 60's. Many of the tie racks were made of it in the 40's.Syroco is easy to find on Ebay for reference to compare materials with. Hope it helps...

WOW! Syroco! Never heard of that before. Is that like chalkware?

That's that plastic stuff from the 60's. Just enter Syroco in your ebay search and see what comes up. It's clocks with wall sconces mainly. Stained brown color to look like wood. It was the rage of the 60's and still around. Very indestructible

The old Syroco was a wood "flour" mixed with resin. Think of it as fine wood particles mixed with a paste. Sturdier than paper mache but more porous than plastic. Subject to swelling if exposed to water. Might be mistaken as sheetrock because it could chip and the exposed area would not have the same shade as the outer stain.

Hi Paloma,

Excellent pictures!

Just a guess on my part... Looks like it might be pressed cardboard.

Paloma, that is pretty neat, boy I was out of the realm trying to picture what was first being discussed as a sheet rock hanger. that is pretty neat. I never saw anything like that, when Davy Crockett was all the rage I had a kid cousin that had everything Davy Crockett, my aunt could not even get him to take of his coon skin hat to take a bath. From the back it does look homemade, I wonder if it wasn't taken from maybe a coloring book cover or just a picture cut out put on press-board or something like that and resin put on over it. I can not tell if the knobs look that old at all.

My friend got it when he was a kid and I am pretty sure his mom bought it at a store. His family is really close to mine. I have never seen anything like this before. It really looks like drywall, doesn't it. I wonder if that D C means anything. It is part of the piece, not written in. I never noticed it until I took the fotos this morning.

Too big for a comic. It means approx 17 inches wide and 22 inches tall at it's tallest point

Now if we kept everyhting we liked our eBay rooms would even look worse. If you can't use it sell it. You know the D.C. could be the designer. It is a great item and something that if there is a davy crockett collector out there would enjoy. If you put it on I hope there are a few Davy Crockett collectors that would like it and they would bid it up up up. If it was mine I would list it. Good Luck BTW Great pictures

Wow, fantastic item. I agree with pressed cardboard(just like the contruction of Little Golden book covers, only thicker).

Good graphics too.

I think this one will sell itself. Don't forget to mention Rare and HTF in the title.

Rare Davey Crocket Coat/ Clothes Rack HTF

LOL, maybe you had better wait for the extra 10 title characters to show up in Feb...

According to Kovel's 1996 Price Guide, it was worth $35 and is called a Davy Crockett Clothes Rack.

I'm sure it's highly collectible and you should do well with it.

Good Luck!

I think the DC can stand for Disney Corporation, wasn't Davey Crocket a Disney release. I have no idea what something like this is worth, but even though the Kovel's is from 96,and prices are higher now, this just strikes as an item for the true fan to bring in some nice money.

Couldnt the DC just be Davy Crocketts initials ???

The Kovel's price guide quote sounds about right. When you enter Davey Crockett into the ebay search engine you see very low or moderate prices on the more unusual/rarer pieces. It may get into a rare ebay bidding war though and that's always the hope of ebay collectible sellers. Good luck Paloma.

The name "Davy Crockett" is mis-spelled quite a bit on eBay. Davey instead of Davy, Crocket instead of Crockett.

The correct spelling brings up some pretty nice prices on the older things. I wonder how many sellers lost out because they had the name spelled wrong?

The moral of the story being, do check your spelling! LOL!

cta, does your kovels say when this was made and what it's made of???? Great idea Libra, I wonder what date in feb. the longer title starts? Lucy! What a great idea. With a longer title I can spell it and mis spell it HUMMMMMM

Now that you have all seen this thing, is it Syroco officially or is this some kind of chalkware or drywall thing???

I don't think it's either one. Looks like multi-layered cardboard to me. As Ltray said, like the cover of a Little Golden Book but much thicker.

Yes, put in every mis-spelling you can think of!
