glassgrl ... i really like that website you posted .. i typed something in i liked for a church sign, and when i right-click to save a .jpg picture, JUST LATELY, on my 2 yr old computer, my puter wants to save it as a bmp image instead of a jpg ... and the bmp images, even if i change the file extension to jpg, it becomes a 'corrupt' unuseable file .... can anyone help me figure out what changed [and what i need to change back?] to make me be able to save .jpg images onto my hard drive? .... this has been driving me crazy for just a couple months now ...

windows XP home version is what we use ...

hmmm.......did you try the "drop down" box in the save images "as"?

I don't know why, I always have to prompt my husband to do that, but I thought I'd just run that simple solution by you also.

In my drop down box, I can save it either as a .bmp or .jpeg

yes... me 'normally' too, can save as a jpg ... for some @#$*^&$& reason, for the past two months, SOMETHING must have gotten reset in my computer to change that option ... [yes i get the dropdown box, and i click 'save' and it will only allow me to save pictures as bmp, period.] ... even if i clear out my Computer Recycle Bin, but later that week want to save my own vendio pictures back onto my hard drive, it will only let me have it back as a bmp., that if i try to 'convert' it to a jpg, it then shows up as a 'corrupted' thingy ...... getting aggravating

That's Glassglr's standard response to any system problem. It is also how she empties her mailbox when it's full!

Do not, I repeat NOT format anything! Geez GG, they take you way too seriously. Now be nice and tell them how to fix it right!

don't pay any attention to her..you know, ltray.

Format! XP. Roll it back to a couple of months previous when you didn't have that problem! Thankfully one of the things I love about XP. It's called "restore".

And if that doesn't work, you can undo the restore.

really!

OK, now I want everybody over here to write Oprah and ask her to help me get my hearing implant.

they turned me down on one ear and I have crashed and burned. I have to go put my Head In the Oven. HIO ltray. Don't tell me you've forgotten so soon.

Be nice or I'll post a picture of you and me.

glassgrl ... how would i 'roll it back' ...i used to see a 'emergency type of restore' with win98 [i think] but i dont' see that feature with XP .. and yes, i loved having that ... you could pick a date that you had all your settings at, and restore to that date's default .... matter of fact, when i got this pc, i was kind of upset i didn't see that feature in 'my computer' etc.

oh well, ... didn't work ... went back to mid nov. first, and it said i couldn't go back that far ... so i tried mid december and it went thru but did not correct my 'save image' [to jpg] problem ... redid to december 1st, and still didn't solve .... i'm doomed.

Here is a link to a page (from Dell) that has a utility that will restore the .jpg optiion in MSPaint. Is that what you use to view your pics? Says that you sometimes lose this function after installing MSOffice.

Hope this works for you!

Internet Explorer Saves Images As Bitmaps (.bmp Files)

View products that this article applies to.
SUMMARY

When you save an image in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the image is saved by default as a bitmap (.bmp). You do not have the option to save the image by using an extension other than .bmp. You experience this behavior even when the image uses a different format (such as .gif or .jpeg).

For example, when you right-click an image on a Web page, and then click Save Picture As, the file name that appears in the File name box is Untitled, and the file type that appears in the Save as type box is Bitmap (*.bmp).

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if a damaged program file (for example, an ActiveX or Java object) is downloaded to the SystemRoot\Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk.

RESOLUTION

To troubleshoot and resolve this behavior, empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder, and then delete the files in the Downloaded Program Files folder that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. To do so:

Start Internet Explorer (if it is not already started).

Empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder. To do so:

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the General tab.

Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.

When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.
In the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk, remove the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. To do so:

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the General tab.

Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.

Click View Objects.

The list of program files that are downloaded to the SystemRoot\Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk appears in the Downloaded Program Files window.

In the Status column, note the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. Remove these files. To do so, right-click the file, and then click Remove.

When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click Yes.

Close the Downloaded Program Files window, and then click OK two times.

Save an image in Internet Explorer to test and determine if the issue is resolved.

If the issue continues to occur after you remove all downloaded program files that are listed as Unknown or Damaged, try removing the other downloaded program files that are on the list.

wow. glassgrl ... I'm amazed you found this info! ... thanks!!! ... I will try that process later today! ...

To view and edit my photos, I use a really great Picture Editor that comes with AOL 9.0 tool bar ... the very best feature of it is "Auto Enhance" - with one click of the button TOTALLY fixes brightness and sharpness automatically ... [can crop photos too ... the only function it lacks, that i would like to use sometimes, is putting text on the images] ...
