Neglus-I absolutely agree with everything you said..I envy that you are able to do it and it is priceless to be able to run your own schedule. I will be ready to do it when my husband finally finishes his bachelors degree, because that is a huge expense and if I wasn't doing Ebay we would both have second jobs right now..I start low and sell in volume and it works but you have to figure out a plan and make it work-I have played around with numbers many times until I got it right and a lot has to do with what you are selling and what you paid for it.

neroter12,you asked-
Reminds me of the penny stocks. If nobody was getting anything out of it, WHY WOULD They be doing it?
///////////////
who is THEY??
those who issue and sell penny stocks??
they will keep issuing and selling these stocks as long as there are suckers.
if THEY are the buyers, well, like the saying-there is a sucker born every minute,GREED is what makes people think they can spend a penny and buy a furture microsoft.
you may be interested to know ebay did not go public at one penny.

stopwhining,

Any penny folks working over 40 hours a week our just plain stupid.

Auction seems to think just because you have your own business you should be working under 40 hours.

I know many folks who have their own business. They make 6 and 7 figure incomes and they have worked hard to get there. Many still work many more hours than they would at a regular job. They can take a break when they want to. Yet they are doing what they love and when they are ready they can retire.

Ebay is not for everyone, but I think it is important for people to enjoy what they do and be able to make a good living from it.

To answer your question:
'They, is Them that do.'

Its legal gambling, man. The thrill of 'what if'. The roll of the dice. How many businesses started out on top without deep pockets..going in with a dream, on a spit and a prayer? STAND UP I SAY TO ALL OF YOU!! ITS THE AMERICAN WAY!!

(wonder if I should take on Dean?)

edited to add:

Gifts, If I were making 6-7 figures, I would not be working all those hours. Whats the point of the success then? I'd have people in place 'doing' the work for me.

owning your own business mean longer hours and paying yourself less and watching every penny of expense.
more you save and plough back into your business, more chances it will survive.
rarely do you see an entrepreneur living like that TYCO guy.

Most $1 or even one penny sellers make a LOT of money on s/h and self-insurance the charge a buck for. Even if the item sells for only one cent they often make $4 or more profit per item ( a la the fluffythewondercat model ). They can earn a comfortable living that way if they are willing to invest many long hours per day.
It's got to get old doing the same crap over and over again?

those who bid one dollar often bark at high shipping cost, and they dont want to pay for insurance.
if i won an item at one dollar,i want it shipped as cheaply as possible and i sure dont want to spend 1.30 on insuring an item which cost me one dollar.
so where is the beef for the seller??

Ace, I am sure it gets to wearing after awhile, but to call somebody stupid for doing it that way? Well, I dont know. I think I'd rather list a 100 things @ .99 make my money on the s/h, then list 20 things a week @ 50-500 and get no purchases and no money towards the listing fees at all. The penny sellers may work harder, but I really think they do better and build up a better customer base for return buyers.

Of course neither happens if youre not listing the right things or the right buyers do not shop you.

Stop, if the idea of working hard to get from here to there (or why do it?), then working more hours and enjoying life less is a big friggen joke if you are making a 6/7 figure income. If I ever hit a 6/7 figure income, I'm not doing that. I am going to enjoy landing at that spot, not working harder and more.

Let's say you sell cheapie clearance jewelry. It has to becaome real drudgery to photo or scan the items, post the auctions, send the emails, answers questions, prepare the items for shipping, etc, ad nausem. The same thing over and over and over. What was once fun job on ebay may soon turn into a crumby job with low wages and no benefits.

Many real life jobs are sheer misery but they last a mere eight hous a day and five days a week.

Ace, I suppose there is some truth to your statement. But most cannot take their 'outside' job in self-acceptable dosages. If one is to sleep 6-8 hours a day,
and work 8 hours a day, that leaves 4 hours a day for whatever else.

Tessa, your math skills are fading fast. There are still 24 hours in a day.

6 + 8 = 14
8 + 8 = 16

leaving either 8 or 10 hours a day for whatever else.
