I want to buy my sweetie a pen that cost 98 cents or $1.98 (depending on how I buy it). They want almost $9 for shipping so I am thinking about it.

stopwhining: Why are you defending this seller? Why do you disbelieve the poster when he says the item is < 1 lb.? You think the seller is using 4 pounds of peanuts for packing?

You must just like arguing. Poster was right to call the seller on this. If seller had been honest by saying "I charge $7 handling" instead of exaggerating the weight it would not be an issue.

Does the bidder want to resell the item??
If i were to buy the item for myself,i dont mind paying a few dollars more for shipping if the item is in good condition and arrives promptly .

I don't believe the seller had in the listing "high shipping and handling fees are in place to assure top-notch packaging and delivery". Sellers that do the handling-fee profit enhancement simply count on bidders not bothering to ask, and assuming shipping will be reasonable. Adding a low purchase price to high shipping and coming up with a figure that you are comfortable may have a certain logic, but you still feel you are being "gamed" by the seller. Now you start to think, "gee, how upfront were they about any other aspect of the listing?"
So what's the problem for the rest of the sellers? Casual eBay bidders/buyers won't say they got ripped-off by an individual seller on eBay; they will say they got ripped off on eBay.

neroter- the $10 was an example someone else used. the item was about $40 for the item, which is about what it is worth. I think too many people are still not clear what my beef is.

If the seller said I charge $10 for shipping/handling/supplies I wouldn't have a problem with it. That is their quote for shipping. My problem is that he is simply overquoting the shipping weight. I don't know if he is doing so to justify handling charges, etc. I only know that the item does NOT weigh over 2 pounds if it is shipped in packing peanuts, bubblewrap, newspaper, etc. Perhaps he is adding a 3 pound brick, I don't know.

Quoting someone a rate based on a blatant weight overage is against the law and a seller needs to be careful of that. There is nothing against the law for charging handling fees because those are seperate from shipping charges, however, misquoting the weight is against the laws of the ICC who regulates Interstate Commerce including weights and measures.

damaris:
i think you just made a most "pained" and correct statement...the buyers dont scream, "XXX screwed me," they scream, "i bought something on ebay and i got screwed!!"

------------------
and whether it is rusty's contention that weight is a tool,[i guess a screwdriver],
or whether it is the not-so subtle difference in handling/shipping, or as i showed on the lenox plate...all this reflects on us...and adversely at that.
