Hi everybody,

This thing is definitely different than anything I've sold before. I've searched eBay every way I can think of and can't find any info on how to list it or in what category.

It's a crocheted vase cover. It was in with a bunch of vintage linens I bought a while ago.

I washed it and stiffened it according to the directions in an Annie's Attic book, which is supposedly the be-all end-all as far as crochet expertise. I put a tumbler inside.

Please take a look.

Questions...

Should I put some dried flowers in it so it looks better in the pics?

Does it qualify as shabby chic?

Baffledly yours,

Lucy

Hey, Baff! I've never seen anything like that before. IF you double-list, put it in the Everything else, weird stuff category. People are always looking for odd gifts.

Not that I think it's weird--I think it's cute and pretty. Others here will know which category is the best.

Lucy...I recognize it, but I can't think of the name for it. They were popular in the 50's and I had a couple aunts that had several of them. Maybe Bizzy might be able to put a name on it.

Hi Road,

Weird stuff - good category idea! In my wildest dreams I cannot imagine ever having something like this in my house. Too strange for me.

I called on my Mom for help in how it should be shaped before stiffening...

She used to make stuff like this... Poor soul! That's when she wasn't busy making organdy Easter dresses to plague my sister and me.

Hi Sparkz - I wonder if it would be good for holding walnuts?

Lucy...That's a thought. If you get that glass outta there, someone could slip it over their snoot and call it a dust mask. That's it! List it as a designer anti terroist chemical protective gas mask. There are paranoid upper crust type people who will pay a fortune for it

Sparkz,

Do I need to put a protective liner inside?

Walnut dust, as you very well know, can spread far and wide.

Hey, maybe you could start a little bizz over there in The Valley selling these. Get together with Cuzzin Jim. When his machines are breeding offer a special!

You know what Lucy, the more I think about it the more I'm sure it IS a vase cozy.
What else could it be.

Where the heck is Bizzy, she would know.

I've had some good success double-listing on Weird stuff, or Really Weird stuff, etc. The dangedest things are listed there. IF I needed a white-elephant gift and couldn't find one here (LOL, fat chance), I'd get one on that site. Take a look sometime. I listed an OOP book by Bernarr Macfadden from the 20s, how to cure constipation--the people modeling the exercises were really funny. No, nothing scatalogical in the pictures, just a hoot. Other listing for it was Books/nonfiction/medicine.

Of course you need a liner, walnut dust is very toxic. You will need a lid too & how about topping it off with some artificial flowers & maybe a bow.

Now it is a
Decorated Safety Lined Walnut Container With Cozy Hand Made

Can't you just picture that in your mind
WOW Beautiful............!

Now sit back & watch the bids mount up.

Kidding aside, I'll bet it sells. It's different, that's for sure.

You're right, Jane. I can't think of any name for it other than "crocheted vase."

I was just Googling and found a few crocheted vases. Most of them had the decorative top rim draped more than this one but the crochet pattern on mine pretty much defines the top edge of the glass inside.

I wonder if it would look better with the rim draped down a bit?

Lucy...Great idea. I'll do like the salesman that sold the Porterville Police department their first radar units back in the early 70's. As soon as the city council gave the o.k. and the contract was signed, he stayed in town for another week. You guessed it, he was signing up several local stores to sell radar detectors which he also sold (but failed to mention to the city council before they gave him a check for 6 radar units).

Well, Sparkz, nobody ever claimed there was very much sense in Porterville.

Thanks all for the help - think I'll ponder it while I sleep.

'Night all, see you in the AM.

Lucy...If you got rid of that glass, would a bottle of 2 buck chuck fit in there? If so, I've got an idea that may just quadruple the price it would normally bring. And the name "cozy " would fit right in

My grandmother used to make these for her vases and biscuit jars. She called them "doilies". That's what I've heard them called by many people. Please keep us informed as to how the auction goes. I have a ton of these in different colors and shapes that grandma made and I would be really interested to see what you get for it.

Thanks - hope this helps.

Hi Capolady,

Did she stiffen them? My Mom said that used to be done with sugar & water.

Lucy,

I think it's upside down. I think if you place it the other way and put the vase in it (if there's an opening at the other end), then it will look like a vase cover with attached doily. Does it work like that? When you purchased it, did it have the vase already in it? If that's really the way it's supposed to be, then I would list it as UNIQUE vintage crocheted vase cover with ruffled doily, or something like that. I would definitely use the word "unique" and "vintage" because it is that! Good luck.

HI Antiques -textiles-linens is where you need to list this item. If I were you I would use the key words of, Cottage look, romantique, charm...It really is a feamle thing. I suggest you look at ebay seller vintageblessings. That woman knocks me out. She makes more money on stuff like that than anyone I have found on ebay..... Good luck

Seems upside down to me as well. They used a lot of these fru-fru things in the 1950's. My grandmother always had a lace doiley under everything on her tables. You're lucky if you get a coaster in my house. LOL!

Hi Diane,

It didn't have the glass in it when I bought it.

There's no opening at the bottom. It's completely crocheted, even has a little ruffle around the foot. The way I have it is the only way it would hold the glass...

Too bad - I like your way better! Thanks for the help.

Lucy ... Here's another thought. Maybe it's not supposed to be flat out like that at the top. Maybe it's supposed to drape down a bit and ruffly. Can you loosen up the stiffener by spraying some water on it and trying it that way? Oh and perhaps by weaving a ribbon around the ruffles and tying it into a bow would be a nice touch too!

It could still be upside down. Remember when they used to create covers of all kinds for things in the bathroom. This could be for the glass used to rinse your mouth after brushing your teeth...

As a vase cover it looks dangerous--easily knocked over if someone brushes against it, and top heavy when flowers are added...

Diane,

I've been thinking the same thing. It would be a lot prettier if it wasn't sticking straight out and ribbons in it would be nice too.

Maybe I can figure out a way to give it a softer look with more drape. I suspect the stiffener can be softened so I can change it. It's how to support it while it dries that's puzzling me.

Hmmm..... back to the drawing board.

Okay, here's the latest rendition! I think it will be MUCH better. You guys are so polite... It did look kinda stoopid the other way.

Yes, the stiffener softened nicely in warm water. When it's dried a bit I think I'll bring the ruffles farther out and add ribbons for the finale.

Jeeze... do I need to get a life or what? Here I am spending my Saturday morning fooling around with this silly thing.

Lucy: I'm getting the giggles over this. Reminds me so much of a time when I was trying to dress up a doll to photograph and sell--fiddling here, fiddling there. Our son wondered if he needed to start worrying about Mom!

I sell a lot of vintage crochet books, and they are very common in those. They have covers for vases, drinking glasses, jugs etc.were made in the 1940's and 50's. They really are not unique or weird, just a vintage item. It would be called a vase cover, and for sure I would picture it with flowers in it.

Hi Amber,

Thanks very much!

Now I have the right name for it.

Do any of your books show these installed on a vase? I'm wondering if I'm getting it right...
