Hi Lucy, I think Bizzy is right about the ribbon and then it would look similar to this one maybe?

http://members.tripod.com/CarolynMurphy/cro-vase.html

Lol, I just read it and they put a 12 ounce catsup bottle inside for the vase.

Hi Kiara,

Thanks for the link. The vase pictured there is the only one I could find when I was Googling.

I know these things weren't at all uncommon, how come it's so hard to find out about them?

Catsup bottle... Oh well, whatever works, right?

Lucy

If you weren't looking for it, there'd be links all over the Internet. Isn't that the way it goes? The cover would look wonderful done like the one in the photo!

Lucy ... Look at it this way, you googled, you goggled, you gaggled and you ebayed it, and still couldn't find out anything about it -- It's UNIQUE or UNUSUAL! Put that in your title and I can pretty much guarantee you the hits will be a-plenty!

Cheryl, You're so right. How many times have I made myself looking for something and can't find it. I'm thinking lacy-type dried flowers... With some pink roses.

Diane, Now that I've cleaned the T-B-C off my keyboard, I can answer you! You're absolutely right, of course. Who knows? Maybe it's an original... Like that beer can?

Sure...

Lucy -- Of course it's original, rare and one-of-a-kind. Have you seen another one like it???? I bet not!!! There you have it! I stand by unique, unusual, vintage and now add original, rare and one-of-a-kind. Before we get done with this one it will sell for at least $100!!! Everyone will want one. People will be e-mailing you and begging you to make one JUST FOR THEM AT ANY COST!!! LOL ...

Oh ... And by the way, Lucy ... HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU THAT T-B-C IS BAD FOR THE KEYBOARD???? Now go and get that rare, original, unusual, one-of-a kind, unique handkerchief with lacy edging and clean it back off. Sheesh!!!

Hi Lucy, I hope this picture helps, they just call it a vase cover. I guess the vase just sits inside it.

Amber ... That's EXACTLY what we thought! BUT, Lucy's is definitely different! It's one-of-a-kind, unique, unusual, and rare. We've googled it, we've gaggled it, we've goggled it, we've froogled it and we've fraggled it -- NOT TO MENTION THAT WE'VE EBAYED IT!!! There is NOT another one like it in all the world. We are absolutely positive. Besides, Amber, the one that you are showing us is CROOKED! Lucy's is absolutely, perfectly straight. She even used pens? pencils? to keep it straight -- not to mention that she even grabbed a level to make sure! (pssst ... Lucy, what were those things?) I'm sure even Ralphie sees that we are 100% right with this one-of-a-kind, rare, unique, unusual ... ummmmmmm ... doily vase-cover!

Diane - you're really on a roll! I guess you had a great today, which is wunnerful!

Hummm.... seeing as how I don't know one end of a crochet hook from the other, I'll have to be content selling just this one rare, one-of-a-kind little charmer. Of course, if I COULD make more then it wouldn't be rare anymore, would it?

Oh darn! I sold the vintage wedding hankie a few weeks ago. Duhhh.... Guess I'll just have to make do with a Kleenex. Keyboard-wise, that is.

I threaded thin poly tubing through the bigger holes in the pattern and suspended it on top of the glass with coffee stir-sticks. Yes, it is comparatively level.

Ralphie could put his doggie treats in it... But only if I forgo the flowers. Wouldn't want him to upset his little tum-tum.

Yes, Lucy ... I did have a wunnerful day! But aside from that ... There is actually a topic on this board that I DO know something about. Geez, I don't know whether to be proud or to be embarrassed! Maybe I could get a job with the Antiques Roadshow giving my advice on hand-crocheted items. LOL....

Anyway, all kidding aside ... Your piece is a very pretty piece and I hope it will do well. I've listed doilies that I have made and they did sell. So I hope you're vase-cover will sell, too.

One word of advice -- I have learned on ebay that the frillier, the better! Ruffles, lace and frill sell big time!

Be proud, Diane, be proud, as well you should be!

Frilly... Ruffly... I'll do my best to frill and ruffle it up. Will add some pretty ribbons and prolly put flowers in it. So the person who buys it will have a finished piece.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it very much.

Hi Meadowlark,

Aha! You searched on "crocheted" as opposed to "crochet" vase.

Thanks for the links! There were some I hadn't seen.

I wonder if this will be the "take a million years to get it listed and end up with a few bucks" thing for this year?

Lucy,

You are welcome. I don't have a clue as to whether someone will bid and make it worth your while. I hope it sells for at least a decent price!

I do think vintage linens is a good place to start, even if the item itself is not vintage.

More versions of crocheted vase covers/baskets:

Here's a catalog with crocheted baskets on page 55 with a rippled (fluted?) edge, giving you some idea how the "brim" of yours could be set.

A word of caution -- don't stiffen using sugar and water! Back in the 50's and earlier they didn't have the alternatives that we have today. Using sugar and water will attract bugs to the item. UGH! Plus, in the humidity, the item will wilt. There are fabric stiffeners, spray starches, and even powdered starches that we can use today to stiffen an item.

Good morning!

Patty, Thanks for the inspirational links.

Diane, I'm using a commercial fabric stiffener. That sugar-water business just didn't sound like something I wanted to do. Even here where the humidity is always around 60% I wouldn't trust it. And ants? Eeewwwww........ Yucky.

Lucy, you are welcome! I don't recommend the sugar water thing either. I posted it only 'cuz you mentioned it in one of your posts earlier.
