Xardon:
No, it wasn't fun here. I remember as a kid, walking into the living room, being surprised to see Kennedy on television, giving a speech. I remember the cold feeling, in the pit of my stomach, by the end of the speech, knowing that within days we might be at war - because if the U.S. declared war I knew that we would too. And I knew that war might mean nuclear annihilation. No, it was not a fun time, waiting to hear what Cuba would do, knowing that I might never live to grow up.

Zazzie The modern version of it's existence does not seem to jive with the original reason of it's existence.
Yes, some people agree with that, so far (voting wise) most don't. I believe I read where attempts to eliminate it have happened almost 700 times in our history. But it's still here.
One of the purposes to me and others who do believe in it, is that it creates a sense of 'checks and balances' that our country has long believed in. One branch of government 'checking' and 'balancing' out another.

Wanted to say hi to you, Irene and agree with what you said.
It was a *very* frightening time to me too. Especially as my parents were getting estimates to have a bomb shelter built in our own back yard.

Linda--I thought the checks and balances were 'The President--The Congress--The House of Representatives'
How does the Electoral College have anything to do with checks and balances??

There are many ways. Here is a URL that can explain much better than I.
I quoted one way it balances below.
http://www.fec.gov/pages/ecmenu2.htm
Members of Congress and employees of the federal government are prohibited from serving as an Elector in order to maintain the balance between the legislative and executive branches of the federal government.

Maybe this site is better:
http://www.gi.grolier.com/presidents/nbk/side/elecollg.html
OR:
http://www.neosoft.com/lwv/pages/electoral.htm
This site also speaks to why some agree with keeping the system the way it is, and why some would like to see it changed.
From that page: The System:
In order to keep the presidency independent of Congress's control, an electoral system was established by Article II, section 1 of the Constitution.

Obviously, W would be doing the nominating if such a situation were to obtain. However, under such circumstances, it seems likely that a well galvanized group of more than 40 Democratic senators would exist and be able to filibuster any attempt to put, say, a Clarence Thomas clone on the bench.

gaffan - You could be right, if it ever got that far.
I just don't think there would ever be enough Democratic votes in the house or the senate to vote for impeachment of the judges from the highest court in our land to begin with.

I never contended it was probable. Merely right.
... and re not getting rid of the EC: the fact that it hasn't happened in and of itself points to the disproportionate power of the states with smaller populations. Proposed amendments tend to die in the Senate, not the House.

What surprise? Everyone knows the counting in Florida was stopped because Gore was expected to win the vote.
If cloning of people is to begin may it not start with Clarence Thomas (nor any other criminal).

I would like to offer my sincere apologies for bringing the Clarence Clone concept up. I know that I'd sleep better if I hadn't.

The checks and balances or separation of powers are the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches.

It's probably part of a communist plot. Communists are everywhere A Long Island Red in every pot. Pinko chickens.

But that would be the choice of expression of a communist as well. Maybe it's the same thing.
His Dog "Patriot" and his Commie pinko chicken "Uncle Sam".
