vintage: The problem with a service like securetunnel is, you're trusting all your communications to them, and who, after all are they? All of your communications will appear to originate with them, all the time.

Check out TOR, which operates natively on your machine along with another freeby called Privoxy. Tor alternates your communications thru anonymous proxy servers around the globe. Your ISP can't snoop on you, and you're IP address will change a bunch of times during a particular session It was developed in part by the US Navy, and is still used by them, including being used to cloak communications during the Iraq invasion. It's easy to install, at least it was on my Macintosh, and you can turn it on and off. It's now opensource. It's endorsed by the Electronic Freedom Foundation. Did I mention, It's free...

Interesting stuff Profe.

I guess I'm just getting too tired to be paranoid nowdays [grin]

Its all I can do to keep up with the basics while I am managing my life and my Father's healthcare.

Ewora,
I get easily confused trying to configure wireless, so I keep a checklist of the configurations I am testing. When I find a combo that works, I make sure to save it to a file, so I don't have to go thru the learning curve all over again when something burps.
Needless to say, in my cluttered mess, I often can't find the notes when I need them, lol. That's the nice thing about VD. Someone around here almost always remembers the thread.

When configuring wireless on my laptop, I take it into the room with my desktop and make all router changes from the desktop. But my desktop is hardwired, so I can't goof up badly enough to not be able to connect to the router.

I have a Gateway and use a Linksys router.

I know trying to configure a router from a wireless link can get quite frustrating. Can you hard-wire link into your router and make the configuration changes?

If so, try it that way and keep a checklist of the options you have tried. Unless you do it every day, I doubt you would get everything right the first time, least I never do.

Also, you might check with Gateway and see if there are any know problems with your Netgear router, could be a firmware update or something similar.

I bought my Gateway in Dec just because it was inexpensive and had the built in wireless. I have been pleasantly surprised with its performance and their web support.

I tried to google "Netgear config problems", but didn't see anything that jumped out as a possible problem. Did find lots of complaints about Netgear though.

Good luck with your configuring. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Dianna
