Hi, NearTheSea!

I thought the moderators were gone but they
are just undercover...looking for nasty
words.

So, be careful.

FWIW, most of the other forums (unrelated to auctions) I post on have a somewhat different moderation approach than AW has in the past...

I never even know the moderators are around until a post is suddenly deleted or moved to another forum area....there isn't any discussion on-forum about such actions....
When I've come across spam posts (a big no-no) or blatant trolls (something else the forum owner despises) I just e-mail and he/she or one of the moderators takes care of it.

All moderation-related activities are handled off-forum through e-mail if discussion is required or an appeal is made...

Having said that, I've enjoyed AW for the couple years I've been here for the open relationship with the moderators as much as for the rich diversity of the forum....I hope, with the changes made, it will remain so...

Back to lurking..*G*

Hi again everyone,

We are using the [email protected] as our sig line as a little reminder to email your moderation concerns to that address. That will ensure that whoever is on duty will receive it and that the all the moderators will be on the same page.

Our personal emails are still available if you should have something you want to discuss with a specific moderator.

Hope that helps.

Pat

NearTheSea,

That's good!

I've been good too lately although I've had
a very strong urge to be very bad once or
twice.

What difference does this make in the grand scheme of things?

I 'll give it a shot...if it isn't some place I wanna stay, I will spend less time here. Lots of places for me to spend time, online and off. AW, go for it...it's your site, do what ya want. I don't care.

Moderators - what about issues that you were working for us that did not address specific moderation calls but moderation policy - such as:

What, if any, email notification requirement is going to exist for notifying people prior to discussing their auction activities/terms/etc?

STILL waiting on that one, Pat.

I think the answer to that one, Powerhouse, is that NO discussion will be allowed about sellers or bidders.

Auctions can be discussed in only general terms. NO specific auction can be discussed.

And if, from the GENERAL discussion, someone can identify the auction, or if you use your Ebay ID in AW and the auction can be identified, the thread will be locked or WOMD.

No discussion.....

Powerhouse,

Mivona is correct. Discussion will have to be kept on a general level, no mention of I.D.'s, Item numbers, or links, hence no need for email notification. Pretty simple.

Pretty simple, but seriously wrong.

Nothing has been mentioned of the in-built restriction on even general discussion. The skills of AW posters to ferret out the auction under discussion from small clues... their ability to search not only Ebay, but also Auctionwatch archives to glean the necessary detail to enable them to pinpoint the exact item, the seller or bidder under discussion.

No mention of how, once that has happened, no matter how inadvertently on the part of the original poster, the thread is DEAD. No appeals, no means of contacting the seller/bidder to enable discussion to continue. Nothing.

And AW has still not come out with the recommendation that Ebay and AW IDs are different.

Wrong, wrong, seriously wrong.

mivona,

That happens now and we lock or delete the thread when we see it happen. We also let people know from time to time that they are taking a risk by using their Ebay name here. Many think the exposure of using the same name far outweighs the risk. To each their own.

Ah, Joice, a most disappointing answer but I understand that you don't specifically make policy.
This does seem to be taking the easy way out of a very serious issue though.
I can see it will now be difficult if not impossible to actually discuss auctions much around here anymore.
This policy of course will lead to easy accidents when people try to discuss issues they discover in auctions and I hope that the moderators will take that into consideration before slinging the formals and informals around.

Thanks, Mivona for the heads up on this. It's so rediculous that I simply would not have believed it if a moderator had not posted it.

Powerhouse,

Initially AW Admin was going to allow links to auctions and discussion could only be about the auction, not the seller or bidder. There was plenty of input from the Membership that the ruling was changed to no links and generalized chat.

It was felt that any situation could be discussed without specifics.

You are right, the mods don't make policy and quite frankly, we like it that way

Yes, Joice, when auctions were previously identified, threads were locked pending notification to the other party under discussion.

That is now not an option. That is the problem. There has been a policy change that will effectively stifle discussion of auctions.

The Britanny persona was very perceptive. That's why she was so successful at irritating people. Frankly it didn't take much perception to see that she desparately wanted attention and if she couldn't get positive attention then she damn well was going to make sure she got negative attention. There is only one way to successfully handle that type of poster.
