Thanks for the facts, Powerhouse - From your taiwan arm sales URL:

"The Taiwan issue has bedevilled the Sino-U.S. relations since Richard Nixon re-established diplomatic ties with Beijing in 1972.
In 1996, the two countries came closer to war than any time since 1950s, when the U.S. sent aircraft carriers to the Taiwan Strait after China fired missiles off the Taiwan coast"

Our son was stationed in Japan in 1996 when this crisis was going on. It *did* come very close to war at that time.

Nicely averted by fine diplomacy. But Dumbya isn't capable of such as that, nor does it seem that he has any desire to avert a conflict. Rather, he seems to be spoiling for a fight, anywhere, so that his presidency won't go without what he perceives to be glory.

Nicely averted by fine diplomacy? Sure.....or maybe it was because of the millions of dollars China had contributed to the Democratic National Party funds. Always helps to have a paid-for 'friend' in the White House.

Oh, right!

The only glory seeker I see is someone so bitter at the loss of their chosen president that they will say the stupidest things and hope that others will rally around and consider them to be perceived as some great prophet.

Someone's seen 'Wag The Dog' too many times.

Why no mention of China selling technology to Irag, in addition, China has been helping Iraq convert the communications and radar installations to fiber optic transmission to improve Iraq's defense system . So in the event of direct hit on installation site from
Allied bombing the whole system is not effected. Not that I am even vaguely a proponent of Mr B's or his international diplomacy tactics or gross lack of, depending on how you view all this crap! To many economic ramifications for both governments at stake, to risk military engagement over such a trivial event.

Don't forget North Korea! China is a big supplier for them as well.

Powerhouse, who's your "someone"? I think everyone knows where you get that wimpy habit.

A real intelligent response.

Speaking for 'everyone' are we now?

1 incident constitues a 'habit'?

Baiting really should be beneath you.

Maybe I've seen too many episodes of Star Trek, but shouldn't the crew have self-destructed the plane before letting it fall into the hands of the Klingons? This is being described as an "intelligence disaster" (try to resist the obvious Bush jokes here).

That probably would have been a better option for the US/China relations but maybe this aircraft doesn't have facilities for 24 crewmen to evacuate in midair? Don't know.

This analysis adds another dimension to a complicated picture:

Sasser said there was probably a "tug of war" between the Chinese Foreign Ministry, "which wants to cooperate," and the military, "which is dragging its feet."

Of course blow themselves up to keep the gear from falling into enemy hands. It's their duty.

Is it foggy in New England Toke? The crew of the EP-3 of course. Their sacrifice would have been a wonderful thing bringing them the full gratitude of all mericans that they gave their lives so heroically for the great good of the nation, the commander in thief, and the everlasting glory of God Almighty!

I am sure they had emergency destruct procedures. Just hope they were able to carry them out.

I agree that when lives are lost ideals like patriotism, love of God and country, etc. sound pretty hollow. But isn't that what they signed up for? They were on a spy plane. Doesn't the risk go with the job?
