Right, Gravid
We don't have the full story on this family, but it appears that isolation and fear was a major problem. A better connection with the local community and schools may have alleviated their fear and isolation, reducing their perceived need to hunker down with guard dogs and ammunition.
Not to believe in public education in this era is outrageous and this in my opinion is the message that Gatto is trying to promote.
As you pointed out, not all families are equiped financially or mentally to deal with educating their children alone. In my neighborhood, both parents have to work and schooling at home is impossible.
I am not bashing anyone's effort to home school their children, but
neither should they feel the need to denigrate public schools, as this
character, Gatto has tried to do.
Of course it interests me or I would not bother to read the threads that you provided.
I read every word of those threads and in addition, I did some research on Gatto's background. I then came to the conclusion, as any reasonable thinking person would, that Gatto's educational philosophy is outrageous. And, I understand where you are coming from so you don't need to "shrug" and as in another thread "spit" to let me know the drift of your attitude.
