UPS only reimburses the SELLER if an item is damaged in transit. Even if the buyer is the one who pays for insurance, it is UPS policy for the seller to repay the buyer.
If the seller doesn't choose to repay, he keeps the returned item PLUS the insurance payout. Seller only receives the joy of spending hours on the phone with UPS staff and waiting as several item pickup appointment "windows" (of up to 8 hours each) are missed by the drivers.
Deal with UPS at your own risk.

I recently had this experience. I wrote the seller a letter that had the check number, date of issue and told the seller that if I did not receive payment that I was turning all of my receipts over to the UPS and they would take it from there. It was a bluff, but it worked. It took four months to get repaid, but don't give up. Just make sure that you keep all of your receipts and let them know that you have been doing some investigating on your own. My seller tried to tell me that she had not been paid yet. When you give the information back to them, it makes them think. Hope this helps!!!

Congratulations, cphtrxtech, but the local district UPS manager made it quite clear that they are only obligated to the shipper. You may have all the documentation you wish but UPS will pay off the shipper, leaving the buyer with nothing and no recourse.

UPS can hardly be in the business of deciding who was at fault in an auction deal. It is only natural that they would deal with the shipper (not seller) not the recipient. Your business deal with the seller is totally beside the point.

Skyscout may be missing the point. UPS only looks out for the shipper even when the issue is shipment damage. The buyer
receives no protection from the insurance he pays for. Buyers using UPS need to be aware that if there is a problem, everything can be lost. UPS will not help.

this is the way that all shipping services work. It is the shipper that paid the shipping service, it is the shipped that gets the money. Dont blame UPS for a crooked seller. There are a lot of other things you can blame them for, but not this.
By the way, I dont waste money buying postal insurance. I once had an insured package get lost. First the PO made me wait 30 days. Then I filled out a form, mailed it to the customer to fill out his end, he mailed it back and I took it to the PO. I had to wait another 6 weeks for them to tell me their records show it was delivered. I had to pay another $7 for proof. They sent me a photocopy of a shipping receipt with an "X" for the signature. This was their "proof." I had to reimbuse the customer and I never got the insurance.

Here is how UPS insure is suposed to work:

The shipper files a claim. UPS either accepts or denies the claim. If a claim is paid out to the shipper, it is the shipper's responsibility to refund the customer for the item or replace it. If neither thing is done, then you have a nice case of fraud on the part of the seller. At that point you will have to take legal action.

Not much of a solution. Legal action against a seller in a different state, or collection of a successful suit, is expensive, time consuming or all of the above.

Now you can get insurance that the Buyer can collect on.

We had good results with UPS on shipping a 1500 set of CHINA...Yes...some of the china did get broken...but they sent a representative to the place it was delivered, to verify the breakage...we filed the claim because we were the "seller"...and we received a "fair" replacement cost that I forwarded to the "buyer"...Yes...UPS only protects the seller...but as a "seller" our reputation is at state to satisfy the customer...If the customer is not happy, then a negative will occur, and Ebay could get involved. I am sure UPS conducts business this way to prevent FRAUD..and even then, I suppose they get their share!!!...The "buyer" is always at risk until the transaction is completed. The "seller" at least gets the money first...and only has to be concerned then about Feedback. Just part of the "auction" world!!!! Be that as it may...

Actually you are automatically insured up to 100$ with UPS so right there it's better than the USPS. Plus they are cheaper once the item weighs more han 5lbs usually.

I just had my first lost package with UPS and they have been great. Sure, the refund will come to me as a shipper, but why on earth would I not refund the buyer? It doesn't make sense to keep the refund, you've already been paid. Of course if you plan to be dishonest fine, but most sellers aren't!

UPS also is a lot faster - 8 business days, so I really can't complain. Now the USPS on the other hand...
