I didn't think they would get around to hosing the diecast sellers quite this early. But it is a natural progression from real cars to toy cars I guess.

I still can't see how you sell to managment that linking to another auction site is GOOD thing.

Ha, there I go expecting logic and intelligence again.

Actually, I'm not all that worried about the competition, it's just so damn dumb.

I love it.

They are different because they are looking for "high-quality buyers".

Wonder what I would have to do to become one of "them". Makes me wonder just who I have been hanging around with here and elsewhere, eBay related.

Would all you "low-quality buyers" please raise your hands so I know who to distant myself from and not endanger my reputation by association.

I understood ToyRanch to have claimed that eBay "said" they would not make any more of these deals. Like most of us, I don't think he has any more insight into what they actually are doing as contrasted to what they say they are doing.

I'm not clear- do you mean buyers who are "low quality" or buyers who buy items of "low quality"?

Either way, I'm not sure I'd like to include myself in that group...

"The statistics I've seen show that most eBay customers have a lower
income level than the Web at large," said Killorin.

Gee, I knew there had to be a reason I haven't gotten rich yet.

MrPHead: You forgot to add the REST of that insulting statement:

"The statistics I've seen show that most eBay customers have a lower income level than the Web at large," said Killorin. If that's the case, he added, then such a buyer base might not be beneficial for sellers of higher-end, more expensive merchandise, who likely would realize higher prices or better bidding activity elsewhere.

REALLY, the why the HELL did ebay sink that money into the "Collections" section? Why put the money into ebay motors, if we are all to poor to even buy the diecast of a car?

Maybe we could all chip in (because Lord knows we couldn't afford it all by our selves) and buy Mr. Killorin a big fat shovel.

Where does it say that ebaY signed a deal with Mobilia? I read that AUTO TRADER signed the deal and if you are on Motors, and then to to AutoTrader, you can then go to Mobilia.

ebaY screwed up by signing the deal with AutoTrader. They don't appear to be getting any money from Mobilia...

If Mobilia banners show up in the diecast section, that's a different story. Not saying I like it, but read the article again and see if ebaY signed any new deals... I don't believe that is the case, but I've been wrong before.........

What I get from it ... it's just another reason the ebaY Motors deal was a bad deal for everyone. And it will likely have some negative effect on diecast dealers...

Yeah, I read it again and again. I don't think ebaY signed any kind of a deal at all. As a matter of fact, it's probably burning their britches a bit. Their 'partner' Auto Trader has signed a deal with one of ebaY's competitors that puts money in Auto Trader's pocket, but not in ebaY's pocket... and they are using ebaY to draw this deal in and make it more appealing to Mobilia.

And since Mobilia claims that they have better-heeled customers anyway... and they have an auction site with 15,000 listings, maybe I'll put some of my diecast over there and see how it does.

Really, there is no reason not to do that...

They have a really cool little feature in their auctions, too... it's a clock that winds down and you can watch the auction end before your eyes. So you don't have to keep hitting 'reload' if you are going to snipe, it has a constantly running clock that winds it down to the end in real auction time.

They have 'stores' for larger sellers with a fixed price format, or smaller sellers can forgo that expense and buy fixed price classifieds, and everyone can kick their items out of classifies or their store and into the auction area if they get tired of having them around...

Check it out HonestJon! They might even be a better solution for your sales than ebaY! Especially with ebaY and AutoTrader both sending customers your way!~

LOL @ toyranch!

I wonder if the deal between eBay and autotrader is null & void, due to this new deal between mobilia and autotrader.

I notice the site is free right now too. I may list a few items. I have a number of automobile related stock certificates.

Well, I just checked out Mobilia's site because I have saved my kids' Matchbox cars from the late 60's and early 70's and want to get rid of them now. I am trying to find an auction site to list them other than eBay but I don't exactly see any great prices there. I think these Matchbox cars should be worth more than $2 each.

I think I got excited for nothing!!

Well, you may be right Toyranch. As long as they don't link from eBay Motors I got no kick.
I registered at the site but I did not see a lot of bidder action. I might list some items there, might not.

Bhearsch:

Value of old matchbox greatly depends on model and condition. Do they have gray, black, or superfast wheels? Any boxes?

Well, OK, eBay didn't do this themselves. Just their partner did it, on a co-branded site. That's the partner they also made an investment in when the agreement for the site was signed.

And who wrote that agreement allowing a partner on a co-branded site to advertise other auction sites?

Isn't that the same type of connection that will get any of us suspended. (Linking from our listing to a web page that links to our listings at other venues.)

But maybe there is a bright side to all of this. You could say that by indirectly allowing their co-branded site to encourage another venue they are showing support for the Million Auction March.

If I stand right in the middle of the tracks and squint my eyes I think I can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi honestjonstoys. I had to go downstairs and dig out a few to see what color wheels they have. Most of them have black wheels and are marked "Made in England By Lesney". The Lyons Maid ice cream truck has the number 47 on the bottom which may help to date them. A few of the racing cars have yellow wheels like the Lotus which is marked "Lesney Matchbox Series Made In England No. 19. I have two age periods because both of my kids collected these cars and they are seven years apart.

Some have boxes but not all of them and the condition varies from excellent to fair. The ones without boxes are in a large Matchbox carrying case that has compartments to store the cars and is dated 1968.

If I only thought they would be worth $2 each after 30+ years, I wouldn't have bothered to save them. Of course, I never throw ANYTHING out which I believe is a common fault that antique dealers share. I still have my former husband's slot cars and all of their paraphernalia for God sakes!!!

Ho Blanche~

Slot cars, now you're talking! Those are usually worth a LOT more than Matchbox cars.

And it's too bad they have Matchbox instead of Hot Wheels. Hot Wheels from '68 are sometimes worth hundreds or even thousands and usually worth at least $10 or more... usually more.

Well you need to see how co branding works, when it is set up. The only area that has a active co branded search so far is in sports memerbilla. To see how it works use Steve Young as an example Ed

Well, the Commer Ice Cream Truck was made between 1963 and 1968, the Cream Colored one books for $40 and the Blue one $30 That would be for Mint with box.
The Lotus with yellow hubs was made between 1966 and 1970 and books for $18. the black tires are still on it aren't they?
A good way to search for these on ebay is "Lesney" and the number on the base.
Old Matchbox with lots of chips are generally worth less than $5

Some slot cars are worth quite a bit but it is not really my thing, can't help you there

Update on the branded search on ebay:

What I saw must have been a limited time Beta, as search is back to normal with random generic ebay ads showing. So ebay must bwe having problems with the software. Keep an eye on it. I am not nuts really. But for 1 day I saw direct links to a instant purchase site for about 70 sports celebs.
